TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

It's midsummer day! We have the advantage of celebrating one of the great hidden treasures of

our liturgical calendar on a Sunday this year. There are only three "nativity" feasts on our calen-

dar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today's birth of the Baptist.

Today's date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own

child's advent, but of Elizabeth's child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve.

There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabu-

lary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as

at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the

sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, lighting "St. John's

fires" in the long summer twilight.

Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the

St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most

interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist's own city. People there will leap

into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John.

Why not find your way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach today and plunge in to recall your

baptism? It's a tradition! --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

THE BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW OF THE SAINTS CATHERINE OF SIENA — “HEAVEN”

FR. ANDREW WOJTAN, HOMILY SUMMARY, JUNE 17, 2018

The "fear of the Lord" is not just a concept, but an experience that predisposes us to wisdom. The Biblical fear of the Lord is an intelligent fear, based on a deep perception of the holiness and maj-esty of God, which rightly recognizes the possibility of violating the law of God, despising His love, rejecting His mercy, and meriting eternal separation from Him. While the fear of the Lord is simply the beginning of wisdom, the end of wisdom is love (1 Jn 4:17), one doesn't jump into love without a deep and ongoing experience of biblical, Spirit-inspired fear.

It's interesting to note how the Father shows Catherine that as each person dies he/she actually rushes to where they want to be. In a very real way each person chooses their own destiny over the course of their lifetime and, at the moment of death, embraces what has truly become their choice.

Catherine summarizes the Father's words: So no one waits to be judged. All receive their appoint-ed place as they leave this life. They taste it and possess it even before they leave their bodies at the moment of death: the damned in hate and despair; the perfect in love, with the light of faith and trusting in the blood. And the imperfect, in mercy and with the same faith, come to that place called purgatory.

As horrible as the final moments of unrepentant sinners are, so wonderful are the final moments of those who die trusting in the mercy of the Lord. The just, on the other hand, have lived in charity and die in love. If they have lived perfectly in virtue, enlightened by faith, seeing with faith and trust-ing completely in the blood of the Lamb, when they come to the point of death they see the good I have prepared for them. They embrace it with the arms of love, reaching out with the grasp of love to me, the supreme and eternal Good, at the very edge of death. And so they taste eternal life even before they have left their mortal bodies.

All the Doctors of the Church share this worldview, in all its essentials. All of them write in light of the seriousness of the situation of the human race apart from Christ, the reality of heaven and hell, and the urgent necessity to order one's life as much as possible to the following of Jesus—right now. As St. Bernard bluntly puts it: You have made all things for Yourself, O God, and whoever wants to live for himself and not for You, in all that he does, is nothing.
