Control valve noise is generated by high pressuredrops across the valve, and by the subsequentturbulence downstream. As a direct result, noiseis radiated to the surrounding area by the down-stream piping system. In situations where equip-ment damage or personal injury could be causedby a noise source, noise attenuation is not onlydesired, it is mandatory.

Several of the following factors must be consider-ed before expensive noise suppression equip-ment is chosen:

• Does the application really require noiseattenuation?

• What are the low or no-cost alternatives tonoise attenuation?

• If noise attenuation devices are necessary, what lower-cost equipment can be specified?

Is Noise Attenuation Necessary? If the predicted sound pressure level (SPL) exceeds 85 or 90dBA, it is often suggested that noise suppression devices berequired. However, higher noise levels may be acceptableif the noise is not associated with equipment damage and islocated away from workers. For example, if the valve isinstalled on a tower some distance from workers, the dis-tance itself may solve the problem, although ear protectionmay be required should workers approach or climb the tower.

Other Low-cost AlternativesOther possible low-cost alternatives to noise suppressionequipment are (1) insulating the pipe, (2) locating the valvedischarge directly into a vessel (allowing the noise to beabsorbed by the vessel), (3) relocating the noise source(such as the downstream piping) outside an enclosed area,(4) reversing the flow direction through the valve, or (5)reducing the pressure drop across the valve.

Inexpensive Noise Suppression EquipmentAlternatives

If the above suggestions are not feasible, noise suppressionequipment in most all cases is required. To reduce noise orsound pressure levels to an acceptable level, Flowserveprovides a wide variety of economical noise reduction de-vices, which minimize and often eliminate higher-pricedsolutions. These devices include:

• Multi-staged Tiger-Tooth valves for SPL reductionsup to 30 dBA

• One and Two-stage MegaStream valves for SPLreductions up to 15 dBA

• MegaStream resistance plates and diffusersfor reductions up to 15 dBA

• In-line silencers for venting applications or for beyond25 dBA

Often, any one of these noise reduction devices in serieswith a control valve can be selected to attenuate noise to theacceptable SPL required. For example, a MegaStreamplate or diffuser, when installed downstream from a standardValtek® control valve, provides about the same dBA reduc-tion as a one or two-stage MegaStream valve, but at a lowercost. For extremely high pressure drops where multi-stagevalve trim may be considered, it may be cost-effective toinstall a MegaStream plate, diffuser, or silencer downstreamfrom a smaller one or two-stage MegaStream valve.

MegaStream control valves are available in sizes rangingfrom 1 to 36-inches, and in ANSI Classes 150 to 2500.Special one and two-stage trim reduces noise up to 15 dBA.

Tiger-Tooth control valves are available in sizes ranging from 1 1/2

to 42-inches, and ANSI Classes 150 to 4500. Multi-stage stack(attenuator) reduces sound pressure levels by up to 30 dBA.

TIGER-TOOTH MULTI-STAGE VALVES

When severe gaseous noise is encountered in anapplication, Tiger-Tooth control valves with multi-stagecapability is the answer.

As flow passes through the Tiger-Tooth valve, it travelsfrom the center of the Tiger-Tooth stack (attenuator)through a pattern of teeth in a radial, wave-like mannerto the outlet, undergoing a series of sudden contrac-tions and expansions. This process reduces pressurein steps witout the large, single pressure drop typical ofconventional valves – significantly reducing gaseous noise.

Tiger-Tooth valves can reduce sound pressure levelsup to 30 dBA in gas applications.

For more information, dimensions and more detailedexplanation of Tiger-Tooth valves, refer to Flowserve'sTiger-Tooth Control Valves brochure.

ONE AND TWO-STAGEMEGASTREAM VALVESMegaStream valves equipped with one or two-stageattenuators represent an economical and innovativeapproach to low noise applications by permitting up to15 dBA noise reduction. A standard attenuator isconstructed from heavy-duty, 316 stainless steel, drilled-hole cylinders.

Since one standard design exists for each valve size, special engineering is not required. This results in lower

prices and quicker deliveries. Because of parts inter-changeability with standard seat retainers, one andtwo-stage attenuators can be fitted into conventionalMark One valves without special or additional parts. The simplicity of design also permits easy removal andcleaning.

For more detailed information about one and two-stageMegaStream valves, see Flowserve’s MegaStream Con-trol Valves brochure.

Standard MegaStream plates, both the housing andperforated hole plate stages, are constructed fromcarbon steel. However, one additional option constructedfrom 304 stainless steel for both the housing and stagesis available. Large plates are available with lifting plugs.

Typical MegaStream plate applications include gas pres-sure reducing stations, gas vents and flare systems.

MEGASTREAM PLATESSimilar in many respects to a MegaStream attenuator,MegaStream resistance plates are installed betweenraised face flanges downstream from a Valtek controlvalve. Each plate incorporates a series of stages. Tocontrol downstream line turbulence, each stageabsorbs a portion of the pressure drop through its manymultiple orifices.

MegaStream plates are designed for each individualapplication, providing SPL reductions of up to 15 dBA.Depending on the type of gas and the pressure dropratio, these plates may require one to four stages.

GDS – Flowserve's standard model MegaStream diffuser.

MEGASTREAM DIFFUSERSLike the MegaStream plate, the MegaStream diffusercan also be used in series with any style of control valveto reduce the sound pressure level (up to 15 dBA) whileeliminating the need for expensive valve trim.

MegaStream diffusers share high pressure drops withthe control valve, yet control the SPL by passing theflow through many small openings to eliminate exces-sive turbulence and energy. Since correct hole size andspacing are critical in determining the performancecharacteristics of the diffuser, Flowserve custom-designs each diffuser for a particular application.

By design, the length of the diffuser and the number ofholes vary to accommodate the flow capacity required. Thus the capacity of the diffuser is significantly greaterthan the MegaStream plate. This also minimizes theuse of reducers and expanders.

Three standard diffuser models are available:

1. GDS – Flowserve’s standard model, which is in-stalled between the raised face flanges of the valveand line.

2. GDI – Similar to GDS but is designed to be weldedin-line or to mating flanges. Outlet is enlarged toeliminate a reducer.

3. GDV – Vent model installed for system dischargeto atmosphere.

IN-LINE SILENCERSFor venting applications and for applications beyondthe range of MegaStream plates and diffusers or Tiger-Tooth attenuators, Flowserve provides an in-linesilencer which may be installed separately or in serieswith one of the other devices. The Valtek silencerconsists of a series of tuned chambers and tubes filledwith sound absorbing material, and is designed forstaged pressure reduction. Because of its complicateddesign, Valtek silencers must be selected for a particu-lar application by Flowserve design engineers.
