As the 2012-13 athletic season draws to a close, I am very pleased to recognize and applaud the outstanding achievements of our many student-athletes, coaches, teams and programs this year. Congratulations on another great season of Gaels sport!

In addition to tremendous individual and team performances over the past year, we were also pleased to host and celebrate many outstanding championships and events including the opening of our newest field, Nixon Field. Our new field instantly provided a special home field advantage for our men’s and women’s teams as Queen’s played host to the Ontario Provincial Rugby Championships.

Later this spring, many of our student-athletes will graduate and depart the University to take on new and exciting challenges. As our newest alumni I wish you the best of luck. I also encourage you to remain engaged and to reach out in support of your respective programs and future Gaels as these athletes pursue the athletic legacy that you have helped inspire and forge.

Thank you for being an important part of the Queen’s community, I look forward to following and celebrating your success as alumni and I look forward to another great season of Queen’s sports in 2013-14.

The Colour Awards mark the official end to the athletic year. It is a wonderful time to acknowledge and pay tribute to the efforts of our student-athletes and teams, and to reflect on your accomplishments and all of the accolades you have received.

There have been many outstanding sporting moments from the 2012-13 season. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who successfully combine academics and athletics, earning Academic All-Star status. Queen’s routinely places among the top three schools in Canada for the number ofAcademic All-Stars. This achievement, combined with your on-field performance, truly makes our university the home of Scholars and Champions.

I also want to congratulate the Varsity Leadership Council and our many OUA/CIS Community Service Award nominees for the leadership role that our teams and athletes play in community service initiatives.

Thanks too, to the many coaches, support staff and volunteers who are integral to the exceptional experiences of our student-athletes and to the success of our programs. I wish you the best of luck with your exams and I look forward to seeing the Gaels back in action in 2013-14.

There have been many highlights this season, and we are proud to come together as a Gaels community to recognize the outstanding performances of our athletes and teams. It was another banner season for Queen’s; congratulations to our provincial champions in men’s rugby, men’s fencing (3-peat), women’s hockey, cycling (3-peat) and women’s rowing. Congratulations also to our many medal-winning teams and athletes.

For those of you receiving awards this evening, congratulations on your accolades - they are especially notable give the immense competition present in our programs.

My sincerest thank you to our dedicated coaches, team captains, support staff, alumni and team supporters who combine to create an environment supportive to our athletes who pursue excellence on the court, field, turf, track, ice, water and in the classroom.

Varsity Leadership Council (VLC) Co-Presidents

The Varsity Leadership Council (VLC) exists as a forum for varsity athletes to discuss the athletic experience at Queen’s, provide recommendations to Queen’s Athletics & Recreation and facilitate interaction between all varsity student-athletes. The council aims to promote a positive image of Queen’s student-athletes and build relations within Queen’s University and Kingston communities through volunteer opportunities and community programs. Finally, the VLC aims to foster a student-athlete culture through team building events and support at home competitions.

This year was an especially great year for volunteer work by our athletes.

Receiving recognition for contributions for their generous time and effort towards others, two Gaels were recognized nationally in their sports at the CIS level along with six at the OUA level.

A truly remarkable representation of the community spirit at Queen’s.

SEASON RECAPThe baseball team improved their record in the 2012 season, finishing at 5-16. For the first time in their OUA history, Queen’s won a season series, defeating McMaster University in two out of three contests.

Other victories came over Laurier, Waterloo and eventual champion University of Toronto. The team showed the ability to compete in close games, posting a 4-4 record in games decided by three or less runs. Queen’s had two players named to the OUA All-Star game: Jamie Cater batted over .300 and picked up the win in two of the team’s victories as the starting pitcher, while Andrew Hastings played excellent defense in centerfield and was a catalyst at the top of the Queen’s lineup.

The team also saw a complete revamping of it’s coaching staff from the previous year. Jeff Skelhorne-Gross took over as head coach, and brought in Ben Schoening and Ryan Roader as new assistants.

SEASON RECAPWith a new coaching staff and a different structure in place, the team welcomed 14 new members to the squad – many of whom were entirely new to cheerleading – and adopted a different approach towards summer training, practices and preparations for competitions.

Opting for a training camp in Cambridge, Ontario as opposed to Scranton, Pennsylvania, the switch kick-started a great year for the team. The road to PCA Nationals certainly had its fair share of frustrations but the team held on and demonstrated a fierce and strong determination to overcome adversity, culminating in a second run surge at competition to reclaim second spot overall in the division after a testy first run. Such achievement of course would not have been accomplished by the strong support shown by the loyal alumni, parents, Canadian cheer community and of course Queen’s Athletics.

Highlights of this season include the team cheering on the Football and Basketball teams at home games, competing at the Canadian Cheer Evolution Big East Blast event at the K-Rock Centre and winning the Level 6 division as Grand Champions.

SEASON RECAPBoth the Men’s and the Women’s Curling teams posted significant improvements on their results of last season.

The women started their year with a road trip, splitting a doubleheader against Guelph. An unfortunate 0-3 performance at the Guelph exhibition event left the team with just the tweaks that needed to be made for OUA’s. The women posted three straight wins before running into the Guelph team again, narrowly being edged out in the last end. Fighting for the playoffs, the women unfortunately dropped their next two games, finishing one win out of the tiebreakers.

The Queen’s men went undefeated en route to winning the 64-team Kingston Whig-Standard bonspiel and the final exhibition event of the season in Guelph. Upon arrival at OUA’s, the team continued that streak, winning their pool again with a perfect 5-0 record. Unfortunately running into a strong Trent team sent the Gaels to the bronze medal game, where they lost on last rock to Carleton. The team will be looking to a new contingent next year to carry the standard, as a large part of the team will be graduating and moving on.

SEASON RECAPThe Queen’s cycling team captured yet another University Cup victory to complete the three-peat. Etienne Moreau was able to finish second overall again this year in the Men’s A division with 213 points gained from the series of four races. James Clarke finished a solid fourth place overall with 121 points and the rest of the Men’s A team members worked hard to lock down another win for Queen’s.

In the Women’s A division, Victoria Giangrande finished second overall after gaining a total of 175 points. Jennifer Campbell improved after moving up a category to the A division. Haley Smith won both of her races that she entered by significant margins and was able to display her dominance once again this year. Finally in the B divisions, Brad Parsons and Hank Jien battled it out for the lead with Hank narrowly edging out Brad by one point for the overall victory. Women’s B saw Jess Metuzals make a strong debut to mountain bike racing.

Next year will see the graduation of the two head coaches, Jon Slaughter (4 years) and Brett Weersink (3 years) with Etienne Moreau taking over the team.

SEASON RECAPSplitting the games and points every weekend was the theme for the Fastpitch team this season.

Newcomers to the team, Morgan Gustas, Pam Hrick, Emily Jarvis, Laura Neal, Mackenzie Martyniuk and Meghan Summers contributed offensively and defensively to help the Gaels qualify for the playoff weekend. This is the first time the team qualified playoffs in the last four years.

At playoffs the team battled through the wet, cold conditions to advance out of the pool play and into the playoff rounds. A convincing 8 -2 win over Laurier advanced Queen’s to play against Guelph in the first round of the playoffs. A pitching duel and great defence from both teams resulted in a 1-0 loss to Guelph which ended the playoff run and the Queen’s Fastpitch season.

The playoff weekend was highlighted by the opportunity to participate in the filming of a Rick Mercer Report segment, to bring awareness and attention to the Ontario Intercollegiate Women’s Fastpitch Association (OIWFA). This was aired on CBC on November 6th, 2012.

SEASON RECAPThe OUA Women’s Fencing Championship was held on Feb. 9-10. Gold and silver medals in team relay events enabled the Queen’s Fencing Gaels to capture 2nd place in the championship among the 11 participating universities. The team relays were Queen’s strongest events, led by Women’s Foil who fenced without a loss to capture the gold medal. Their peers in Women’s Sabre fought their way to the gold medal round to lose in a technically demanding match against Carleton.

The Queen’s Men’s Fencing team captured its third consecutive championship banner at the OUA Championship Feb 18-19. In Saturday’s individual events, Karl Gardner won Gold in the Men’s Épeé competition and Frank Beaucage-Gauvreau won gold in Men’s Sabre. Five further top 16 places in individual competition set the stage for Queen’s to take the OUA championship on Sunday. Final rankings in Sunday’s team relay events contributed substantially to Queen’s overall point standing. Men’s Sabre took the Gold medal. Men’s Épeé took Silver. And Men’s Foil fought with tactical sophistication to win Silver also.

SEASON RECAPThe Queen’s Field Hockey Team concluded the season with a record of 2-9-1.

The athletes worked hard and committed to a high level of play that was recognized throughout the OUA, including a tie with the CIS contenders, the Western Mustangs. The success of the final weekend of home games with many parents, peers and alumni out supporting the team will carry them forward into a strong upcoming season.

Fifth year player, Allison Wallis, was the recipient of the OUA Gail Wilson award for outstanding contribution to the community and to the sport of field hockey.

In the meantime, the team will continue to develop, including taking an opportunity to tour to the UK during reading week to play.

SEASON RECAPThe season began with a fifth place finish at the Carleton Invitational and the team moved up one position at the McMaster Invitational. The year culminated in a much improved standing, coming in second at the OUA Championship which was hosted by Queen’s.

There were many personal bests with first place finishes coming from Renee Tse in Senior Silver Singles and in Intermediate Similar Pairs with her partner, Charlotte MacDonald. Nicole Grenon and Anna Krzemien skated to win gold in Senior Similar Pairs. They also turned in a bronze medal performance in Pairs Four with Jodi Anderson and Melissa Minken. Gwen Eadie joined in with a flawless skate worthy of the gold medal in Open Solo Dance. She skated with Elizabeth Liao, Sarah Trick, and Megan van den Akker to come in second in the Bronze Rhythm Dance. Elizabeth herself freeskated to a silver medal finish in Gold Singles. Second place finishes were earned in both the Junior Silver (Clare Higgins and Lauren Kolarek) and Senior Silver (Stefani Mackie and Jennifer Pickering) Similar Dances. The team closed the championship strongly in Synchronized Skating, placing third.

SEASON RECAPThe women’s team in league play competed in six Invitational tournaments. Their best finish being 3rd, in the Carleton tournament. Highlights during the season were Captain Jenn Kates shooting a personal low of 82 at Waterloo and Alex Rawn finishing with the same score at the OUA championship. The team scores were average or below in the other tournaments and finished 8th in the OUA championship.

The men’s team also competed in six Invitational tournaments. They earned gold at Guelph and at their own event at Queen’s. They finished 3rd at Carleton. In league play, the overall first all-star was Russell Bowie, making him the top player in league play. The Queen’s team finished 3rd overall in Invitational tournaments.

At the OUA Championship hosted by Waterloo at The Grey Silo golf course the men finished 5th overall, with the event being won by Western. Queen’s was only six strokes back of first place. Their overall score was eight strokes better than last year when the team finished third. Echo Chan of Kingston shot 75 and 71 to earn a spot on the OUA second all-star team.

SEASON RECAPThis season the men’s lacrosse team was able to rebound from a disappointing 2011 campaign with a very positive 2012 season. While the season began on a losing note, by the midway point the team had rounded into top form finishing 3rd in the Eastern Division. Despite dropping two games in double overtime, the men’s lacrosse team finished 4-3-2 courtesy of a 4-1 run beginning with a 17-0 thumping of the Concordia Stingers; Alex Guiney and Zane Yassein shared the very rare lacrosse shutout in the victory.

The strong play in the second half of the season vaulted the team into the Eastern Conference quarter-finals. Unfortunately despite a strong eight point performance by leading scorer Matt Eriksen the effort was not quite enough as the men’s lacrosse team fell 13-12 at the hands of the Bishop Gaiters.

This season saw an exceptionally strong rookie class with multiple first years earning starting roles and contributing in key situations. With a young, talented team fresh off playoff experience, 2013 will undoubtedly be a strong year for men’s lacrosse.

SEASON RECAPThe Gaels won Bronze for the third year in a row at the OUA Championship hosted by Queen’s in Kingston. For 2012, Coach Bolland installed a new offense, which struggled at first, but the team improved steadily to peak at the end of the season. Overall, the regular season record was 5-6-0 with 111 goals for and 83 goals against.

Over the season, mid-fielders Sarah Goldspink and Teresa Mayo (co-captain) led the team with 24 goals each. Forward Marsha Cryderman (co-player/coach) was a close second with 23. Jen Farrow (co-captain) scored nine. The OUA Championships saw Queen’s play McMaster in the quarter-finals, winning handily. That advanced the Gaels to the semifinals against Western, where they lost, but many say was the best game played all year by both teams. The Bronze medal game was a hard-fought battle against Laurier. The final score was 8 – 7 for the Gaels.

Queen’s again will graduate eight players this year and a special thanks goes to them for all of their years of hard work and wish them continued success.

SEASON RECAPThe Nordic Ski team had a strong 2012-13 season with approximately 20 athletes training six times per week starting in early October. Twelve of these athletes were selected for the race team after the winter training camp in January.

The race team competed in nine different races over the course of four weekends on the road. Brad Parsons had a standout season providing top 20 placings in skate races throughout the year. The team peaked well at the OUA championships, hosted by Lakehead in Thunder Bay. Katie Prufer had an exceptional 12th place finish in the women’s 5km skate race and finished 17th overall for the weekend. The men’s relay team had their best result in years finishing in 4th place and as the 3rd university to cross the line. The team of Taylor, Parsons and Weersink finished with an impressive combined time of 32:04.5, less then a second ahead of Waterloo.

Head coach Weersink will be graduating and next year’s coaching staff will include race veterans Brad Parsons, Jess Metuzals and James Taylor.

SEASON RECAPThe Queen’s Sailing Team’s 2012 season was an eventful and successful one. They competed in 12 regattas in the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA), increasing their ranking from 38th to 22nd out of 50 teams. They also competed in two regattas in the Canadian Intercollegiate Sailing Association (CICSA), taking home the National Team Racing Championship title for the second year in a row, hosted right here in Kingston. They finished 3rd at the National Fleet Racing Championships, a title they hope to win back next year.

It was coach Max St-Maurice’s first season with the team, and he did a great job of motivating and pushing the team all season long. The team will be sad to lose many key members who are graduating this year: Cameron Allen, Oliver Blake, William ‘Roby’ Douglas, Victoria Ehmann, Greg Harries, Arielle Morgan, Phillipe Price, Heather Richarson, Spencer Stubbins, Mathew Sullivan, Will Schwenger, Paul Throop. Of the graduating team members, all but one have been part of the team for their entire time at Queen’s.

SEASON RECAPThe men’s squash team picked up a number of very good rookies this year including four who were ranked in the top seven on the team: first-year Mo Hamour (#2), Patrick O’Sullivan (#3), Vicrum Vaidya (#5) and first-year Theo Petropolis (#6).

The other newcomers (Patrick Livingston, Wesley Cranston, Rishi Midha and Sam Yeon) also strengthened the team considerably and will be expected to step into the shoes of the graduating athletes in years to come. Although the team was stronger than it has been in the recent past, the tournament results were mixed. This was partly due to the absence of some top players at some of the events, particularly #1 Alex Ford at the OUA Championships, which contributed to Queen’s coming 4th.

This result was compensated to some extent by Mo Hamour being named All-star and Rookie of the Year. With the enthusiastic and inspirational leadership of co-captains Alex Cormier and Adrian Dingle, Queen’s still has a chance to redeem itself at the Jesters Squash Championships on March 22.

SEASON RECAPThe Queens Women’s squash team had a strong showing in regular season, beating all opposing schools and finishing with an 8-0 record.

Going into OUA finals, the team was down one of their top players, however the team rallied and pulled out a few close matches to come third, three points behind 1st place. At the National Individual University Championships, the Queen’s team had a record showing of seven athletes. Queens athletes had 1st place finishes in both the A and B division, a 2nd place finish in the B division and a 3rd place finish in the open division.

The final championship of the year, the Jesters Championships take place March 23 in Toronto. Queens will be fielding their top team and are expected to finish strong.

SEASON RECAPIt was a year of great growth and development for Queen’s Swimming, which was markedly faster than in the previous few years due to a strong crop of rookies.

The competition season started out with great swims at the OUA Sprint Invitational in Guelph followed by the Hall of Fame Invitational in Etobicoke, where Queen’s swimmers faced competition from across the country. Following this, Divisional Championships, held in Ottawa, saw a large percentage of Queen’s athlete’s placing at or near the tops of their field. Towards the end of 2012 and into early 2013, Queen’s swimmers took place in a number of meets, including Canada Cup and Ontario Cup in order to gear up for OUA Championships in Toronto.

This year at the OUA championships, Queen’s Swimming had more swimmers scoring individual points and relays placing in the top 8, resulting in an improvement in the team’s overall standings over the previous season. Queen’s Swimming also had one swimmer, Margo Bacher, qualify for, and compete at the CIS Championships in Calgary.

SEASON RECAPThe season began with the McGill Invitational in November, where Queen’s earned two silvers, in the team event and novice team event, and a bronze in the duet event. Queen’s Synchro then hosted Eastern Canadian Divisionals at the ARC in January. The club earned thirteenth and eleventh place finishes in duet and fifth and sixth place finishes in novice team. In the team category, Queen’s teams placed eleventh, sixth, and fifth. The season finished off in February at CUSSL Nationals at Western. The novice teams earned fifth and sixth place, maintaining their placing from the previous competition. The Red team moved up in the rankings from the preliminary event to finals, finishing thirteenth. In finals, the Queen’s Blue team finished in ninth despite having to re-swim their routine due to technical difficulties. The Queen’s Yellow team finished fourth overall, moving up from their preliminary sixth place finish.

Queen’s performances at Nationals and throughout the entire year were impressive given the tough competition from a number of universities who were new to the league this season.

SEASON RECAPIn total, eighteen Gaels would make team standards for participation in the OUA championships, with 16 making the trip to Windsor. On the men’s side, the team was led by 4th year Josh Potvin’s 7th place in the 1500m and second year Dave Cashin’s 9th place in the 3000m. The women were led by a pair of rookies--Julie-Anne Staelhi, who finished 4th in the 1500m and Erin O’Higgins, who finished 7th in the 3000m. The Gael’s women’s 4x800m team finished 5th, securing qualification to the CIS Championship in Edmonton.

Four athletes qualified for the CIS Championships—Staelhi in the 1500m and the women’s 4x800m team consisting of Staelhi, Erin Slade, O’Higgins, and Ceilidh Stubbs. Julie-Anne capped the best rookie season by a female in Gaels distance track history with a 5th place finish, becoming the 4th best Queen’s performer all-time at the 1500m. The Gaels 4x800 team exceeded its 10th place seeding with an outstanding 7th place finish, becoming the third best 4x800 team in school history, missing the Queen’s record by only 1 second.

SEASON RECAPQueen’s Triathlon had a strong start to the University Multisport Series (UMS) at Swim, Row, Go this January, where the team dominated the competition, winning 110 out of a possible 155 points.

Queen’s then continued the winning streak at Hart House Indoor Triathlon in February, despite a team size severely limited by a winter storm. The small, yet dedicated, group of triathletes literally could not have performed better, and captured all of the top spots in the categories represented.

March’s Splash & Dash in London saw more success for Queen’s, with the rookies nearly sweeping their races, as well as some very strong performances from the veterans amongst fierce competition.

Queen’s Tri hopes to defend the UMS title for the seventh consecutive year as the team will host the series championship race on April 7th.

SEASON RECAPThis year the team put in a strong effort throughout the season, be it in practice and games. Two weeks in, the team hosted the annual tournament, Easterns, in Kingston. After pushing hard the Gaels made it all the way to the semi’s in an unforgettable OT match against McGill, regrettably losing the last point. The team finished up taking third against Waterloo. The B team displayed heart and talent on the field, rivaling higher seated teams such as Ottawa, where they earned a win.

Unable to attend Nationals in B.C. due to financial constraints, the team did end up traveling to a mock nationals tournament in Hamilton. Although the competitive atmosphere was not quite at its height, the Gaels finished the tournament with 5 wins and 2 losses. The B team also displayed fierce determination, playing almost savage the entire tournament with eight players. A special recognition and thanks goes to the vets for the years they’ve dedicated and for the encouragement and skills they were able to pass on. In contrast, a large base of new additions to the team came this year, whom will take the Gaels far in the years to come.

SEASON RECAPThe Women’s Ultimate team had a very exciting Fall 2012 season. This year the team had the opportunity to compete both on the Gaels home turf and across the country.

Queen’s first competed in the Canadian Eastern University Ultimate Championships (CEUUC) at home in Kingston, defeating Western in the consolation finals to place 3rd. For the first time Queen’s also had a B team compete in CEUUC, who competed hard and developed their skills.

The Gaels were the only Eastern team in Canada to compete in the National tournament, the Canadian University Ultimate Championships (CUUC), in Kelowna, British Columbia.

After facing tough competition from the western teams, the Gaels finished 4th.

SEASON RECAPThis season the water polo program had a major change in leadership with a new coach and, with that, there was a new philosophy introduced. Players were asked to make a stronger connection between training and performance so that games could have predictable results from identifiable systems of play.

The season had highs and lows that were in sharp contrast and did not follow a curve. This meant the team beat every OUA opponent other than the Gold and Silver programs from UofT and Carleton. The problem the team will now address is bringing the best performance at the end of the season and that should be on the radar for the whole team as winter training centres on this.

There was solid goaltending from Charles McClintock this year and great leadership from players like Trevor Robinson, James Bickerton and Hugh Ragan. Strong rookies Aly Mokhtar and Ziv Deutsch, and low graduating numbers, should make next season a great one from start to finish.

SEASON RECAPThis season, the women’s program had a major change in leadership and new demands to train with greater focus and intensity. Players were asked to find ways to approach the game as a team rather than just as individuals with varied skill from many diverse clubs.

During the season the Gaels increased their game schedule by 30% and beat every OUA team other than the Gold and Silver programs from Carleton and UofT. The team started a duo of rookie goaltenders, with only high school experience, and found great team defence to fit their strengths.

There was never any quit with this program and the struggle we had at OUA Championships came from putting too much pressure on ourselves after seeing our potential. That lesson has been learned the hard way and veteran leaders like Marissa Robinson, Judith Weist and Emily Ready are working hard to take the very talented squad the next steps to a podium performance.

SEASON RECAPThe wrestling team had a remarkable season that spanned from September to February in which they competed in 8 tournaments.

The Gaels trained hard and succeeded at each competition including both junior and senior provincials. All the athletes showed perseverance despite injuries and all wrestled well at the OUA’s where Yi Quan was the recipient of the OUA community service award.

Quan was later named a co-winner of the women’s wrestling CIS student-athlete community service award at the CIS championship in London, Ontario.

Queen’s continues to train hard in anticipation of placing even higher next season.

SEASON RECAPIn its inaugural year, the Varsity Leadership Council (VLC) has implemented several programs that have brought Queen’s athletes into closer contact with the Kingston community. It has recruited a number of volunteers to mentor young adolescents through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kingston. In December of 2012, the student-athlete community went above and beyond expectations and collectively sponsored 11 family and 51 individual holiday dinners through Martha’s Table, a local soup kitchen. Currently, the VLC is establishing a School Visit program promoting the value of daily physical activity and healthy living in Kingston elementary schools.

In January, the VLC hosted an event on “Super Saturday,” a day where 5 of our varsity teams were in competition. Over 250 athletes were present, supporting their fellow Gaels and demonstrated the spirit and unity that Queen’s University is known for.

Moving into the 2013-14 academic year, the VLC is excited to build upon its previous successes, and increase the scale and scope of its outreach opportunities. It is our hope that in the future, community involvement will be a fundamental component of the Queen’s athletic experience.

This award is made from slate, a metamorphic rock that has undergone alteration through heat and pressure to form its current state. Slate also symbolizes a record of performance and represents a new beginning. Graduating student-athletes have been tested by the combined rigors of athletics and academics during their career at Queen’s. The personal growth you have experienced as a student-athlete has prepared you for success in future endeavours.

The Graduating “Q” is a constant reminder of your experience as a student-athlete. The commitment, perseverance, joy, pain, and ultimately the successes you have achieved are all represented by this award. Presented to graduating athletes who have contributed to Queen’s for a minimum of three seasons, this award is a reminder that recipients are ‘Forever a Gael.’

JACK JARVIS TROPHY — VARSITY CLUB MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEARThe Jack Jarvis Trophy, presented in 1963 by Queen’s boxers in memory of their long-time coach.
