Vasco Nunez de Balboa’s Discoveries
Vasco Nunez de Balboa’s Discoveries
Balboa set out with a small party of 67 to cross the mountains in the center of the peninsula near Panama to find his great discovery
On September 25, 1513, he climbed a peak and became the first European to look out on what would become the eastern shore of the Pacific Ocean
In discovering this shore, he built a pile of stones and a cross - he and his followers knelt and sang a Catholic song of Thanksgiving
After celebrating with the singing of this song, they marched to the shore and formally took possession of the ocean in the name of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain

of the South Seas After discovering the eastern shore of the Pacific Ocean, the expedition headed down the mountains and set out by canoe along the shoreline, being the first to do this in history
As they continued this journey, they stopped at the edge of the coastline and Balboa raised his sword in one hand and a flag with the picture of the Virgin Mary in the other, and claimed possession of the new sea and all adjoining lands in the name of the Spanish Sovereigns
