Dear athletes,

welcome to nice!

this event is sure to be an emotional day for both

athletes and ironman staff. we all remember

the tragic events of the 14th of July 2016 when

the promenade des anglais suffered a terrorist

attack. we will all come together this year to pay

a sporting tribute to the victims.

the ironman france nice will be the first event

on the promenade des anglais after one year

of mourning and we have a duty to respect this

amazing place.

the ironman france nice has been voted as

“Best ironman in europe” by athletes, and with

new safety measures in place, 2017 is set to be

another incredible journey.

you’ve dreamt about this day and trained hard

– so now is the time to get out there and enjoy

it! from the start to the finish line, you’re sure to

make some unforgettable memories.

this sunday, 23rd of July, you will be an

“ironman”!

finally, from all the ironman team, i would like

to thank our volunteers. please take a moment

on the day to say thank you to them. we also

wish a warm thank you to the city of nice for

its support and confidence in ironman, and of

course to our private partners.

See you on the finish line!

rolling Swim Start

rolling swim start

1 - age group athletes only As part of IRONMAN ongoing race development and improvements, the IRONMAN France-Nice will be using a Rolling Swim Start in 2017.

2 - What is a rolling start?Athletes are staged in different zones. These zones are determined by the athlete’s predicted swim time. The start area itself is narrowed as you approach to control flow. The start line is 4 meters in width and will allow 5 athletes to start at the same time. It will take approximately 15 minutes to get the entire field across the swim start line.In effect, this will create a time trial dynamic for the race and for the determination of the final results. It is important to know that each athlete’s individual race time will start when only they cross the swim start timing mat, under the swim start arch.

3 - how does this work?> The (on-shore) pre-swim staging area

will be divided into starting zones/corrals based on an athlete’s predicted swim time for the 3.8km course.

> There are 13 swim zone/corrals (excluding pro athletes):• under 1h02• under 1h06• under 1h08• under 1h10• under 1h12• under 1h14

• under 1h16• under 1h19• under 1h20• under 1h24• under 1h29• under 1h45

* The swim cut off time is 2:15hrs for all athletes regardless of the time you enter the water. If an athlete does not complete the course in 2-hours and 15-minutes, he/she will be disqualified immediately at the swim exit and not permitted to continue with the race.> Athletes will seed themselves into these

zones/corrals based on their predicted swim time.

> Groups will commence the rolling start based on these groups with fastest athletes on course first. E.g. in the 60 min zone/coral.

> Athletes timing chips will activate once they cross designated swim start timing mat, at the entry ramp to the swim course.
