Buyers head NORTH for the lifestyle they craveAlison Brownlee

[email protected]

As real estate prices contin-ue to rise in the Greater Toronto Area, more home hunters may consider looking farther north.

The average price of a Greater Toronto Area home was roughly $739,000 in April.

However, the average price of a property in Muskoka, Halibur-ton and Orillia was $253,000 for non-waterfront and $425,000 for waterfront in March.

So what can you buy if you decide to spend the equivalent of an average GTA home purchase in cottage country?

How about a 2,700-square-foot waterfront home that boasts five bedrooms and two bath-rooms with 160 feet of shoreline on Fairy Lake?

And who wouldn’t love cathedral ceilings, wood beam accents, hardwood floors and a wood-burning fireplace also included?

And it comes with a different lifestyle, too.

Ferlito Zambrano said he and his wife made the decision to move to Muskoka for the sake of their kids, though he continued to work in Toronto.

“We had always gone north to cottages,” said Zambrano, a paramedic who works full-time in Toronto and York Region.

“And because of the kids’ experience going to the cottage every summer, we made a deci-sion.”

The couple moved from Toronto to Aurora when their first child was born, and then moved to Newmarket when they welcomed their second. But ele-mentary school proved difficult for the kids, as Zambrano said they were bullied.

Seven years ago, the couple decided to move their family north to a 12-acre waterfront property in cottage country, per-manently.

“It was for their safety and to create a living environment that our kids would never forget,” he

said. “It is a great place to grow – the water, the fresh air and the outdoor activities. And it’s like an early retirement for me.”

Zambrano still works in Toron-to and the GTA. He travels south for his shifts and stays in the city while working before returning home for his days off.

“Living in the big city, you’re dealing with the traffic. Living in Muskoka, you’re dealing with the traffic of the wildlife,” he laughed. “Deer, moose, bears.”

He said he has spotted moose in the middle of the road and even once had a bear in the kitch-en, which the family dog kept in check.

“You have to realize, living in Muskoka, that is the surround-ings,” he said.

The family searched exten-sively before settling on Utterson, a hamlet in the municipality of Huntsville.

The couple was able to put a bid on the property before it went on the market.

“Sometimes the decision you make is about timing and you just make it,” he said. “Timing is everything.”

Bracebridge resident Greg Mournahan, a fellow York Region paramedic, said his Muskoka neighbourhood is filled with for-mer and current Toronto and GTA emergency services personnel.

“If you’re coming up here because property is cheaper, it’s not going to work that way. I don’t think (it is) if you take into account vehicle expense and added rent in the GTA,” said Mournahan, referring to those who live in cottage country and commute to work in the city.

Here’s a look at what you can snap up in cottage country for around the average

price of a GTA home:

LETTERS TO THE EDITORCOLUMN

Marney Beck

Long government line brings out the best in us

ave you lined up late-ly for a new green and white health card or your licence renewal sticker?

I have, and it was an interest-ing, frustrating yet uplifting expe-rience.

I received an official provincial government notice in the mail a few weeks ago stating that I had exactly 30 days to convert my old red-and-white health card to the new photo ID card.

I had been hoping to avoid such an invitation/order, as I loved the fact that the card never expired and it had worked perfectly well for decades — providing me health-care access whenever I needed it.

However, in addition to the serious-sounding language used in the Ministry of Health letter, the truth is my beloved card was dog-eared, ripped and held together with tape.

I had to admit it was nearing the end of its plastic lifespan and the new green and white card seemed a safer option.

So, I dutifully gathered the required documentation to bring to my local Service Ontario office.

I was dreading the task, as the provincial office at Bernard on Yonge in Richmond Hill always has long lineups. Recently it had pro-voked a series of letters to the edi-tor from residents expressing out-rage at the lengthy lines, cramped space and overwhelmed staff.

“Bring a water bottle, you’ll be standing a long time,” said one friend. “Just don’t even apply for the green card, keep using your red and white card,” advised someone else who shall remain nameless. “Go to the one on Bloomington Road in Aurora,” advised a reader, “there’s lots of room inside; staff are friendly and polite, too!”

Armed with patience and all my needed documents, I arrived at the Richmond Hill Bernard office and was almost pleased to be the first client standing outside the door. In the past, I have often joined a long line of between 10 and 20 people when I need to renew my licence, so to get right up to the door was

a bonus.Within about five minutes, a

long line of about a dozen people formed outside behind me on the hot, humid, sunny day. One was an elderly man with a cane.

Ahead of me in the line inside the air-conditioned offices were parents with squirming children, people filling out forms at a coun-ter, and a woman in long robes covering her from head to toe seat-ed in one of only three chairs, with a son or relative standing in line.

The languages spoken repre-sented a mini United Nations, but everyone was polite and friendly. The Asian couple right behind me was a little too friendly, constantly giggling at private jokes and bump-ing into me — and apologizing — as they looked at their devices.

As I inched my way to the front of the line, I became aware that one man with a strong Russian accent was giving the elderly man with the cane his spot in the line. Then came an active discussion and much gesturing with the woman seated on the chair, trying to give up her chair to the older man.

Finally, a staff person at one of the counters helpfully waved over the elderly gentleman and said loudly, so all of us could hear, some-thing to the effect that he would be served without waiting in line.

Not a soul objected. How wonderfully Canadian it

all was. Despite the fact the govern-ment office was overwhelmed, staff and residents maintained their composure and showed kindness and deference to each other.

After exactly one hour wait, it was my turn and my new health card is now “in the mail” — if we don’t have a postal strike.

Mayor should not criticize police unionRe: York police union begins work-to-rule campaign, June 30.

Concerning this article, the first thought that comes to mind is the lack of leadership on the part of the York Regional police ser-vices board chair.

Presumably, it falls on the shoulders of the Markham mayor, as he is the chairperson. How would his finger pointing address the escalating police budget and the impending job action?

The Sunshine List keeps getting longer and longer every year and has reached a critical point whereby more than 70 per cent of the force makes more than $100,000 a year.

Contract after contract, the police services board essentially rubber stamped the benefits and salary increases without any serious dia-logue with the union to work out a blueprint for a balanced approach to smart policing and to maintain a long term, sustainable police budget.

How is a mandated ticket quota an effec-tive use of valuable police resources? Mem-bers of the police board get paid to sit on the board to ensure the police force operates in an efficient and sustainable manner to pro-tect us. The mayor is compensated to be the chairperson, in addition to his compensation

package north of $200,000. By the way, the mayor of Toronto makes

less than the mayor of Markham, yet the City of Toronto is seven times larger than the City of Markham.

From an economics standpoint, I feel the mayor has little credibility criticising the police union. There is a public bargaining process in place between the board and the union.

The process to determine the mayor’s compensation is done by council behind closed doors. What is the criteria? Where is the performance review? Where is the com-parison to cities of similar size?

The valid question is: has the mayor been doing an excellent job to earn his salaries, sit-ting as chair and board member at the police board, PowerStream and others and being compensated by each and every organiza-tion?

To set an example, the budget restraint measure should start at the top.

Let us not forget the mayor’s pet project a few years ago; the GTA arena fiasco. Markham taxpayers were on the hook for more than $750,000 with nothing to show for it.

The irony is our mayor was re-elected unchallenged. The real question is: do resi-dents of the great City of Markham deserve better?

City seeking nominations for new Order of Vaughan award

A heat advisory has been issued for York Region this week.

Heat warnings are issued when high temperature or humidity con-ditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of illness, such as heat stroke or exhaustion.

Extreme heat can greatly affect older adults, young children, anyone with chronic illnesses or breathing problems, those who work outside or homeless people.

Warning signs of heat-related illness include dizziness, headache, weakness, confusion, nausea or vomiting.

“Drink plenty of liquids, espe-

cially water, before you feel thirsty, to decrease your risk of dehydra-tion,” reads a statement on Envi-ronment Canada’s website.

Anyone without access to in-home air conditioning is urged to visit climate controlled sites such as shopping malls, community centres and libraries.

The Al Palladini, Chancel-lor, Dufferin Clark, Maple, North Thornhill, Vellore Village, Wood-bridge Pool & Memorial Arena, Father E. Bulfon and Garnet A. Wil-liams facilities are open as cooling centres in Vaughan.

Shooters still undefeated on soccer pitchThe York Region Shooters

remained the lone undefeated team in the Canadian Soccer League’s First Division after they blanked host Hamilton City 2-0 Saturday.

Following a hard fought first half, York Region took the lead at 56 min-utes on a goal by midfielder Richard West.

The Shooters increased their lead to 2-0 when forward Aleksand-er Stojanovski collected a through pass to slot the ball past Hamilton City goalkeeper Adrian Becic at 70 minutes.

The Shooters played with 10 men during the second half after defender Gerard Ladiyou received

a second caution and was ejected, and at 90 minutes Domagoj Zubac of Hamilton was shown the red card.

With the win, the Shooters improved their first-place record to 4-0-0-12.

Hamilton City fell to 3-4-0-9 and are in fourth place.

The Shooters are scheduled to resume league play on the road against Serbian White Eagles, 2-3-0-6, at Etobicoke Centennial Stadi-um Friday at 7 p.m., before return-ing to St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School in Maple to host last place Milton SC, 1-4-0-3, Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

Vaughan throwing pizza birthday partyAdAm mArtin-robbins

[email protected]

Pizza and beer are dietary staples for many university and college students, but for Remo Palladini they’re also the perfect combination for celebrating Vaughan’s 25th anniversary as a city.

The arrival of that municipal milestone inspired him to bring the two together and launch Vaughan Pizzafest, a three-day “family friendly” celebration on tap at the Woodbridge fairgrounds from July 15 to 17.

“There’s no better place to do a pizza fest,” said the lifelong Woodbridge resident. “It’s a predominantly Italian community and it’s the city’s birthday so the idea was to just throw a big pizza party.”

Of course, the 10 plus pizzerias taking part – including Ricci’s Pizzeria, Za Pizzeria, Pie Woodfire Pizza Joint, and Slopes of Vesuvius, among others — don’t serve cheap, greasy slices students scarf down to fill their bellies.

Rather, they’ll be offering up artisan pies made with fresh and, in some cases, gourmet toppings.

Same goes for the brew. We’re not talking about the watered-down

swill poured in pubs haunted by post-second-ary students, but about 30 flavourful lagers, ales and stouts produced by roughly a dozen of Ontario’s small-batch, craft brewers, such as Lake Wilcox Brewing, Beau’s All Natural Brew-ing, Highlander Brew Co. and Wild Card Brew-ing Company.

And there’s more than just pizza and beer to tantalize your taste buds.

Those who prefer their cheese and pep-

peroni wrapped in a blanket of fried dough will be able to enjoy panzerottis as well as stromb-olis, pizza rolls and other “pizza related items,” Palladini said.

Pizzafest also has an entertainment lineup brimming with local talent including singer/songwriters Carlo Coppola, Joee and Laura Cavacece, performing Friday night.

On Saturday night, Stuck on Planet Earth, Glass Ampp, Spookey Ruben are performing, along with headliner Fast Romantics.

There’s lots for the children to enjoy as well, including reptiles courtesy of Reptilia, Lego-land fun and a midway.

A Pizzafest wouldn’t be complete without a pizza-eating contest, Palladini added.

“It’s basically, eat, drink and be merry — that’s our goal for the event,” he said. “We want people come in and sample as much food as possible and we want everyone to have a good time.

Proceeds from the event will go to support the Vaughan Yeoman rugby club and another charitable group still to be confirmed.

WHAt YoU nEEd to KnoW:DATES AND HOURS: - Friday, July 15 from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. - Saturday, July 16, noon until 11 p.m. - Sunday, July 17, noon until 7 p.m.Admission: $10. Pizza tickets cost $12. Each ticket consists of six slices

with vendors charging between one and 20 slices for the pizza and other food. Pizza tickets also serve as tickets for the midway and other children’s activities.

Drink tickets cost $5 each. A full ticket gets you a 12oz beer while half a ticket gets you a 5oz sample.

Vaughan inks 4-year deal with city’s unionized workers

The City of Vaughan and the union rep-resenting more than 600 full-time public servants who work for Vaughan have come to a four-year deal.

The Canadian Union of Public Employ-ees (CUPE) Local 905 reached a contract settlement ratified by council June 28 and CUPE membership the following day.

The terms of the agreement include wage increases of 1.5 per cent for the first two years (2016 and 2017), 1.625 per cent for 2018 and 1.75 per cent for 2019.

CUPE Local 905 represents approxi-mately 600 full-time clerical and techni-cal staff, as well as hourly employees in Vaughan.

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua saluted the four-year agreement as a win-win for resi-dents and employees.

“Delivering high-quality services and

programs for our residents is a prior-ity and by reaching this four-year agree-ment for hundreds of employees, we are demonstrating our commitment to the people who work for this city and con-tribute to its continued success,” said Bevilacqua.

Vaughan man faces stunt driving charge

enforcement in the Hwy. 7 and Hunters Point Drive area.

here’s a saying among police officers, suggesting there are three different types of people in the world — sheep, wolves and sheepdogs.

Sheep are the trusting sort, wolves the predators who prey on others and sheep-dogs help protect the flock.Of the three, former Det.-Sgt. Dave Godfrey was a sheepdog through-and-through, according to his friend, Staff-Sgt. Peter Button.“Dave was a strong charismatic man. He spent his life taking care of and helping others,” he said, referring to his old friend from the Toronto police.Godfrey died in April after suffering a massive heart attack in the middle of the night at his Keswick home. He had been enduring back pain for months prior to that night, the doctors not realizing that three out of his four heart arteries had become blocked.Thankfully for his entire family, only a few months previous, he experienced what his wife, Nancy, would call one of the proudest moments of his 62 years — the moment he walked his daughter down the aisle. It was that day he gave Nicole away to her husband and his new son-in-law, Tyler McAuley.“He was so proud to be her father,” Nancy recalled, becoming chocked up as she reminisced about the man she loved for so long. “He’s left a huge hole in our lives.”

Thirty-three years earlier, the pair met in Toronto. They started dating and got mar-ried a few short months later. Two years after that, their only child, Nicole, was born. It was on the opening day of bass fishing season that they’d welcome their bundle of joy, who would revel in her father’s attention, eventually becoming a lawyer.“When I was young, my dad was my first teacher,” she said. “I remember learning how to add and subtract and tell time with him before it was taught in school. My dad taught me how to swim, skate, ride a bike, drive a car and a boat and, most impor-tantly, how to fish, shoot a shotgun and a rifle and use a bow and arrow.”Nicole recalled following years when she would accompany her dad as his new bass fishing sidekick in and around her birth-day.He didn’t only spend his time teaching his daughter, but many others around him, acting as a firearms instructor with the Toronto Police College, where he helped shift the police force from the old .38 cali-bre revolver to the modern semi-automat-ic pistol and, eventually, work with Button. The pair would develop a long and cher-ished relationship, that saw Button and Godfrey spend their free time together, fishing, skeet shooting, eating porter-house steaks and even skinny dipping on New Year’s in freezing Lake Simcoe, near Godfrey’s home.“We were enjoying an adult beverage in

Dave Godfrey

the (hot) tub when, all of a sudden, Dave yelled, ‘It’s time boys’,” he said, before the three ran down to the lake with the moon shining off their bare backsides. “After I got over my initial surprise, it occurred to me that maybe there was

something to what people said about folks who live in Keswick,” he added. He recounted stories about just how rare Godfrey used to enjoy his steaks and also reminisced about the time he and Godfrey went fishing with former York Regional Police chief Julian Fantino, with Godfrey wryly telling him he’d “fish” his cellphone out of the water when the chief threatened to throw it into the lake should he receive “one more call”. But most of all, Godfrey was a family man, Button said, remarking how proud he was of his wife and daughter.“He was very proud of them both — I know because he told me so,” he said.Nicole might have said it best when she recounted how she dealt with the heart-ache left where her “daddy” used to stand.“My dad was the strongest person I know and what he would want most is for us all to take a deep breath, have a drink, plan our next step and Git’R’Done,” the lawyer said. “And, so, we will, and we will take all that he taught us and the amazing impres-sion he made on all of our lives with us. And we will all be better and stronger peo-ple for having had him in our lives.”
