Program for September 9th Meeting

Mike & Kathy Leudenmuller will talk about the Fabulous French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is a companion dog. The breed is small and muscular with heavy bone

structure, a smooth coat, a short face and trademark “bat” ears. Prized for its affectionate

nature and balanced disposition, they are generally active and alert, but not unduly

boisterous. Frenchies can be

brindle, fawn, white, and brindle

and white.

In discussing the history of the

French Bulldog, it should be

noted the importance of three

countries: England, France and

America. England provided the

foundation for our modern

Frenchie: the old bulldog. Breeders in France developed the smaller bulldogs into a

distinctly “French” type and American breeders set the standard that prescribed the all-

important “bat ears.” The origin of the French Bulldog begins with the bulldog in England,

where so many of our AKC breeds originated. The ancestral type was not our modern

bulldog but the bulldog of 150-200 years ago: a strong, athletic dog, high on leg, and

capable of being used in that barbarous activity called “bull-baiting.”

VCDFA Newsletter Page 7

My name is Linda Whisenhunt and I would like to be your new VCDFA President. I

started showing and breeding Great Pyrenees Dogs approximately 30 years ago when

I was young, single and did not have children yet. I had ample time and energy to

dedicate to doing my part to improve the breed. At that time I was a member of the

Great Pyrenees Club of America and the Great Pyrenees Association of Southern

California. I spent a considerable amount of my time working with the GPASC Recue

by finding forever homes and being a Foster home for the rescued Great Pyrenees. In

my mid 30’s, I met my husband, got married and had 2 children Having been out of the

dog show world for approximately 10 years, I was now ready to become involved

again! I have also been handling many additional breeds, as well as Great Pyrenees and working with Car-

los Carrizo and other handlers! I am a member of the Great Pyrenees Alliance of the West as well as the

Great Pyrenees Club of America and, for the last year, have served as the VCDFA Vice President. I look

forward to continue working with the VCDFA in promoting canine activities as well as public education

Thank you for considering me for the VCDFA position of President.

NOMINEE FOR PRESIDENT — Linda Whisenhunt

I joined VCDFA in 1982 and immediately started ring stewarding and eventually became

chief Conformation Ring steward for many of the shows. Bobbie Diehl and I taught

many ring stewarding classes over the years. I served as VCDFA chairperson of the hotel

-motel committee. I was VCDFA match chairperson for three years (1990-92) and was

the show chairperson and served as a Director for the Southern California Beagle Club

and the Los Angeles County German Shepherd Dog Club numerous times. I am currently

a member of the German Shepherd Dog Club of the San Gabriel Valley. I am currently

serving as a director for the Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park and have held that position

since 2008. I am the person who in 1992 initiated the red Club jacket/blazer program. I

made the initial contact with our first sponsor, Pedigree and worked with VCDFA club member Bill Bergum

who negotiated and signed the first contract. I have served as a VCDFA director in the past (1989-2008)

and also as VCDFA parliamentarian (2007-2012). I am a member of the Channel Islands Unit of

Parliamentarians.

NOMINEE FOR VICE PRESIDENT — Joe Majzel

NOMINEE FOR VICE PRESIDENT — Bobbi Davis

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION. My husband Don and I started exhibiting

SEALYHAM TERRIERS in the late 70's and we have both held various positions in our

breed and all breed clubs. I have served as President of the Sealyham Terrier Club of

Southern California, was show chairman for the Conejo KC as well as Vendor chairman

for Conejo KC, Los Encinos KC, Black Mountain KC, Silver State KC, Santa Ana KC, South

Bay KC, San Luis Obispo KC, Apple Valley KC, Simi Valley KC (and probably a few more

I can't remember) as I always felt I needed to give back to a sport that has done so much

for us.

I am honored to be considered for the position of Vice President and will do it to the best of my ability.

One Side note: Yes, Ventura is a long way from my home in Perris, but I am used to traveling -- my

hairdresser is in Lompoc.

NOMINEE FOR TREASURE — Shirley Welch

I have been a member of VCDFA for 17 years. I have served on the board, as a Director

and am currently the treasurer of VCDFA and I am looking forward to continuing with

the VCDFA. I have been showing and breeding dogs for about thirty years in confor-

mation and obedience and have had over fifty champion Saint Bernard’s, Affenpin-

schers Toy Fox Terriers, and Tibbys. For 28 years I have also worked as the treasurer,

bookkeeper and Secretary of Cal West Pruning Service, Inc.

I am honored to be nominated by the committee as candidate for the position of

Corresponding Secretary. I have worked as a Registered Nurse for 30 years, through that

experience I have learned caring and problem solving. I know all these skills will be

useful in any position I might hold for the Ventura County Dog Fancier. I have been a

member of the VCDF for 15 years, have served on the Board of Directors, Membership

Chair and, for the last year, as Corresponding Secretary. I also assist with ring Service and

Education, have been Match Chair for several years, and have judged every group and

Best In Match. I am involved in Conformation, Obedience and rescue. I belong to the

Saint Bernard Club of America. The Affenpinscher Club of America and the Toy Fox

Terrier Club. I look forward to again serving the VCDF as Corresponding Secretary.

NOMINEE FOR CORRESPONDING SECRETARY — Mary Ann Welch

NOMINEE FOR RECORDING SECETARY — Donna Hollingsworth

It's about the dogs - no matter what the issue of the moment, they are our reason for

existing as a club. In being the honest steward of our resources, financial and otherwise -

it comes from the sweat of our members brows. In the right of people to know what is

going on and have input - our members are our greatest asset. In open, honest governing

without political maneuvering. In working for the good of our dogs and our club, not for

any private agenda. In personal accountability and in a work ethic for us and the dogs.

VCDFA is one of the greatest AKC Member Clubs in existence. It is up to the members to

determine the direction in which VCDFA continues. I love this club. My dogs are my

passion. I have served VCDFA as a worker, a Board member, Treasurer, Recording Secre-

tary and Winterfest Show Chair. Under the Holly prefix I have loved, exhibited and finished my Samoyeds

from the Bred By Exhibitor class. An AKC Breeder of Merit, I’ve had multiple AKC Best In Specialty Show

winners, four Best In Show Puppies, International and Mexican Champions, Therapy Dogs, Herding titles,

CGC titles and Grand Champions. I have taught the VCDFA handling class for years and have loved every

minute of it - what a joy and to see my “student” dogs do well in shows! The sport of purebred dogs under

the AKC is one of the few remaining sports with high standards. I’m proud to be a participant in such a

great sport.

I am running for Recording Secretary and I have been in the club for thirty years, and I

was recording Secretary for 7 years so I do have experience. I have served as Committee

Chair for catalogs sales for over 20 years, and I am meeting refreshments assistant. I am

present at most of the meetings. I would appreciate your vote at the September 9, 2015

general meeting

NOMINEE FOR THREE YEAR BOARD OF DIRECTORS — Maria Bokron-Nowlin

I have been a member of VCDFA since 1995. I have served the VCDFA as a Board

member and as Trophy Chairperson, for almost as long as I have been part of this

wonderful club. I have had dogs and cats my entire life. For the past 20 years my breed

has been the Samoyed dog. Many of them have multiple titles from the conformation

ring. I also am very proud that I was recognized from the AKC as a Breeder of Merit.

Currently, I have a full time job and must add, the most important part of my life is the

love I have for my family, both two legged and four!

NOMINEE FOR THREE YEAR BOARD OF DIRECTORS — Lorraine Ebdon

I have owned dogs for 51 years and purebred dogs for 41 years. I have been exhibiting and

breeding Italian Greyhounds for 17 years. I have been a member of VCDFA for 17 years

and a member of the Italian Greyhound Club of America for 10 years. I have served VCD-

FA as Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, President, Past President and am cur-

rently on the Board of Directors. I have served the Summerfest show for approximately 11

years as Secretary, Assistant Show Chair, Treasurer, and Show Chair. I have assisted Italian

Greyhound specialty shows for 15 years. I have served as a Ring Steward for 17 years. I

have also judged matches and Best Bred by Exhibitor. I am currently working for the City of

Oxnard as a Paralegal in the City Attorney's office.

NOMINEE FOR THREE YEAR BOARD OF DIRECTORS — Mike Lerchenmuler

I have been involved with dogs my entire life. From an early age I have known the

pleasure and responsibility of owning and caring for many breeds of dogs. In 2001, I

was introduced to the Bulldog breed as a couple came along with my marriage to Kathy.

I have participated in breeding Bulldogs since then. In 2008, we took the plunge and I

started showing Bulldogs in Conformation. My first show was at Summerfest. In 2011,

we decided to add a little spice to our lives and purchased our first French Bulldog. We

now actively breed and show French Bulldogs in Conformation also. Along the way I

have been active in the Bulldog and French Bulldog clubs. I am an active member of the

Pacific Coast Bulldog Club, the Bulldog Club of America, the French Bulldog Fanciers Continued . . .

of Southern California, the French Bulldog Club of America and now the Ventura County

Dog Fanciers Association. I have served in various capacities for all the clubs. I am the

current Vice-President of the Bulldog Club of America Division III. I also served the club

as Secretary for many years. I have served as chair for various committees in the clubs

and helped run many Specialty shows. I am familiar with the AKC process for show ap-

plications and approvals. As a recent member of VCDFA, I worked Winterfest & Summer-

fest 2015 as Grounds under Jim Scott. Kathy and I joined VCDFA as it is a local AKC All

Breed Club. We live in Camarillo, therefor it is very convenient for us to attend meetings,

Board & Regular and participate in club events. I was asked to run for Director so I accepted the Nomina-

tion. I do feel I have the qualifications and experience to work with and assist the members of the Board.

Being a Director is an excellent way to learn the "ropes" of the Club. I would consider it an honor to

be elected.

NOMINEE FOR THREE YEAR BOARD OF DIRECTORS — Mike Lerchenmuler . . . continued

I would like to share with you a little about myself. I am a native Southern Californian.

During my childhood a neighbor had a male Irish Setter. I immediately fell madly in love

with the breed. However, our house was home to many lovable and wonderful mutts. I

am married and have been for 43 years. We are proud of our 35 year old son, his wife

and 3 year old granddaughter. In addition, our 28 year old daughter is also doing quite

well. Irish Setters have been part of our lives for over 41 years. We have been involved

with Irish Setters by breeding, participating in confirmation and rally. More recently one

of our dogs has become a Therapy Dog. I have handled our Irish Setters in the show ring,

but I have found they perform and work much better with a professional handler. We have been a member

of the Irish Setter Club of Southern California for over 20 years. For the past 10 years I have been perform-

ing the duties of their Sunshine Chairperson. Prior to that we were responsible for managing the Raffle Ta-

ble at the Irish Setter Specialty shows. I am a member of the Irish Setter Club of America and have been so

for 10 plus years. I have been Sunshine Chairperson for the VCDFA now for two years. I have attended at

least 90% of all meetings, events and have volunteered to work at both the Summer and Winter Fest for

the past two years. I look forward to working with VCDFA as part of the board. Thank you for considering

me for the VCDFA as a Director.

NOMINEE FOR ONE YEAR BOARD OF DIRECTORS — Bobbe Jocobs

NOMINEE FOR ONE YEAR BOARD OF DIRECTORS — Maxine Pauling

I first came in contact with VCDFA through my Mother in the Early 1970's. I first became

a member in 1974 when I married another VCDFA Club Member, George Schuurman,

who raised and showed Saints. I started in Obedience and worked with Ann Boardman

until her death. We train, showed and worked VCDFA Shows. For many years I was Ring

Service Chair with Shirley Dumas teaching me my duties. I have earned Obedience Titles

with several Breeds and showed my Dachshund to a Championship. I am Secretary for

175 Residents in the Housing Authority. Part of my duties is working with the Residents

and our Manager. Obedience is still my first love and VCDFA comes in a close second.

Most people realize that the handler of the Stud Dog and Brood Bitch must wear

an armband, but should the handlers of each of the get? This question has come up

more than once, most memorably at our National Specialty when a very determined

exhibitor got into a shouting match with the 2 ring stewards (each of whom had a

different opinion). The entire show came to a halt while the Show Secretary found

the correct booklet/section/page that provided the definitive answer.

p.s. it was one of the stewards who had it right
