THE MASTER’S DEGREE

The master's degree in Nordic Media offers an international perspective on media systems in general, and the Nordic situation in particular.

The Nordic countries are different in many respects, but have over the years developed several common characteristics, by some referred to as the ”Nordic Model”. In the Nordic Media master’s programme, we ask if the Nordic Model exists, and whether it will survive in an increasingly globalized world.

Using interdisciplinary theories from both social sciences and the humanities, you will study Nordic Media with a comparative and international perspective. You may focus, e.g., on media institutions in the Nordic countries, media and cultural politics, economics and regulations, media and democracy, freedom of speech and information, or media and cultural products.

The Master's Programme leads to the degree Master of Philosophy in Nordic Media.

The Master’s degree consists of:

60 credits of coursework

60 credits Master's Thesis

The course work

The coursework consists of 30 credits of compulsory courses and 30 credits of elective courses. The topic and problem of the Master’s thesis should be instructive for your choices of the electives.

The compulsory courses are MEVIT4000 – Master’s thesis seminar, a course in methodology, preferably MEVIT4800 - Perspectives and methods in media research, and MEVIT4100 – Nordic Media in an International Perspective. We recommend all students to do the compulsory courses in their first semester.

The process will also provides insights into tools for gathering information and litterature, train you in useful writing techniques and show you how to submit a project description for approval. In the second semester the main focus will be on literature, research design,

A GUIDE TO OSLO INNOVATION CENTRE AND IMK

The Department of Media and Communication (IMK) is located in Oslo Innovation Center - Forskningsparken, floors 2 and 4. This is where you will spend most of your time. On floor 2 you will find rooms 205, 207 and 208 where most lectures are held. Here on floor 2 there is also a study hall, a computer room, book lockers, film room, study-group room and editing room.

In the hall behind the TV there is a small kitchen which everyone can use. Remember that it is your responsibility to clean up your own mess! At the end of the hall you will find Rosebud (the party organizing society’s room), where student parties and social gatherings are held.

The administration is located on the 4th floor. Ms. Kristin Sandberg is the receptionist and can help you with general enquiries. You will also find study advisors Ms. Hanne Degerstrøm Ellingsen and Mr. Haakon Berg Johnsen on this floor. The academic staff also has their offices on the 4th floor – their pigeonholes are located next to the reception. There is a computer room for Master’s students and a xerox machine which everyone can use. For this purpose you need a copy card – these can be purchased at Akademika bookstore.

Key card

You need a key card in order to enter the Forskningsparken buildings. First, pick up your student card at SiO-senteret. SiO-senteret is situated inside the bookstore Akademika (in Kristian Ottosen’s house) next to the administration building. After you get your student card, see Kristin Sandberg in the reception to have your card registered as a valid key card. You need to renew the registration of your key card each semester in order to retain entry rights to Forskningsparken.
