Executive Summary The Business Performance Management (BPM) vendor landscape continues to evolve. Many of the established vendors have introduced significant new capabilities, features, and modules. Some vendors now even roll out product enhancements on a quarterly basis. New vendors continue to appear on the scene with well thought-out and innovative products delivered by experienced teams. The pace of acquisition has slowed somewhat resulting in more vendors to choose from than in quite some time. This year’s report includes several new vendors and also excludes some that were previously included, due to their diminished activity in the performance management marketplace.

The purpose of the BPM Partners Vendor Landscape Matrix is to provide a point-in-time snapshot of all the core players, their status in the market, and the focus of their offerings. This is accomplished with a summary grid, along with vendor by vendor commentary, attribute checkmarks, and customer satisfaction ratings collected as part of the annual BPM Pulse Survey. This document will be updated periodically to reflect the most current information available. We believe that this information should enable organizations to focus their vendor selection activities around those vendors most likely to meet their needs, saving time and money in the process. This information is not intended to replace the thorough due diligence, analysis, and detailed evaluations and comparisons that we recommend be conducted as part of any BPM vendor selection process.

All of the data contained in this document has been independently researched and compiled by BPM Partners, Inc.

The customer satisfaction data is from the 2013 BPM Pulse Survey which ran from January 2013 through April 2013, except where noted otherwise.

The BPM Vendor Landscape Matrix Explained This grid is only for Business Performance Management (BPM) Vendors. It is therefore important to understand how we define BPM:

� BPM is a set of integrated, closed-loop management and analytic processes, supported by technology, that address financial as well as operational activities.

� BPM is an enabler for businesses in defining strategic goals, and then measuring and managing performance against those goals.

� Core BPM processes include financial and operational planning, consolidation and reporting, modeling, analysis, and monitoring of key performance indicators (KPIs) linked to organizational strategy.

� Operational Analytics focus on the performance of key business areas including Sales, Marketing, Customer Service, Manufacturing, R&D, IT, and HR.

� From a technology perspective more vendors are embracing SaaS (software-as-a-service), and there are also several solutions designed from the ground up to take advantage of the cloud. The larger vendors are porting their performance management applications to high-performance in-memory calculation platforms. Mobile access, mostly on the consumption of data side, is beginning to gain traction. Big Data is an area that is just starting to be talked about in the performance management world.

� On the application side of things there is a continuing focus on ever more granular profitability analysis, predictive capabilities, and external benchmarking. More vendors have added financial consolidation capabilities and most of them are coupling it with disclosure management and collaboration. Several additional vendors have introduced vertically focused solutions and pre-packaged operational analytics (usually for sales). The common theme is bridging operations and finance.

We currently track over 100 vendors that provide software to address one or more aspects of business performance management and business intelligence. The majority of these vendors are not included in this matrix. Inclusion in the Vendor Landscape Matrix is based solely on BPM Partners’ evaluation of vendor activity in the field as it relates to performance management. Only the most active vendors competing for and successfully delivering BPM solutions in the U.S. market are included in this grid. We no longer include stand-alone business intelligence tools vendors. It is our experience that most performance management customers today are looking for applications focused vendors, or those that combine applications and tools.

This matrix objectively places the active BPM vendors according to the scope of their current offerings, and their relative momentum in the market. It is updated once each year. Within a particular box, vendors are organized alphabetically.

The horizontal axis identifies vendors by their current market momentum, usually determined by number of customers, market presence and growth rate. Vendors in the left most column are either relatively new to the market or self funded which often leads to more controlled and slower growth. The vendors in the right-most column typically have 100 or more customers using their performance management solutions and are continuing to win business on a regular basis. The middle column contains vendors who have demonstrated good traction and momentum but have yet to hit critical mass in terms of the number of installed customers.

The vertical axis reflects the focus of a particular vendor’s offerings:

Specialized - offers one or more of the basic components of performance management such as budgeting, planning, modeling, financial consolidation, disclosure management, reporting, dashboards

Comprehensive - bridges finance and operations by providing most, if not all, of the basic financial components and adding operational elements such as operational analytics for sales, HR, services, IT, etc., operational planning, profitability analysis and optimization

Extended - offers a comprehensive set of performance management applications and in addition markets and sells transactional systems that provide source data, such as ERP,

and/or pure business intelligence capabilities that enable the development of complementary applications

The BPM Partners Vendor Landscape Matrix is intended to provide objective, informative placement of the various vendors. One of the key design elements in this approach is that there is no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ place to be on the grid. Which group of vendors is the best fit for any given company is a function of that company’s specific requirements. Companies focused on just certain aspects of performance management may find their solution in a vendor with specialized offerings. If a company is looking to eventually implement all aspects of BPM then a comprehensive solution might be in order. Those companies who are looking to add a complementary business intelligence (BI) capability or are interested in purchasing performance management from their ERP vendor may be interested in looking at the vendors with extended offerings.

An important note regarding the developing vs. established vendors: while the established vendors offer proven solutions with theoretically less risk, the developing vendors tend to be more innovative, more cost-effective, and more likely to offer personalized service and a chance to directly influence product direction. The decision on type of vendor to select then becomes a matter of company needs and corporate culture.

Vendor Details For each vendor included in the matrix we have included brief comments, usually highlighting what’s new or unique about the vendor. Where available we have also included customer satisfaction ratings for 12 key attributes as well as an overall score. This data comes directly from the 2013 BPM Pulse Survey which had responses from over 225 companies. Respondents who rated vendors/products self-identified themselves as users of the vendors/products being rated. They were asked to rate their vendor and product satisfaction on a 5 point scale with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest. The attributes being rated (and their grid codes) were:

Vendors that did not get assessed in the 2013 BPM Pulse Survey, or did not have sufficient data to provide an accurate rating are noted with “data not available”. If they had sufficient data in the most recent prior survey year then that data is included and so noted.

In addition, we have included a set of vendor checkboxes to highlight specific product and vendor capabilities. The key to the current set of checkboxes follows:

Financial�Performance�Management�

Budgeting (Bud): The product offers top-down and bottom-up budgeting, as well as planning and forecasting.

Modeling/Strategic Planning (Plan): The product has built-in functionality to develop and maintain models as well as create the strategic plan.

Dashboard (Dash): The vendor provides a graphical interface that can display a collection of key performance indicators (a scorecard) with gauges, stoplights, and charts. Dashboards may be graphical display tools or prebuilt applications.

Reporting & Analytics (Rept): The product offers a robust report development tool for ad hoc queries as well as production reporting in addition to any prebuilt reports.

Consolidation (Con): The software sums data from multiple ledgers, incorporating currency conversion and intercompany eliminations as needed.

Analytics�

Packaged Analytics (Pack): The vendor delivers packaged solutions focused on selected operational areas (such as sales performance management), or profitability analysis and optimization.

Data Visualization (Dviz): The vendor provides specialized data visualization capabilities beyond standard charts.

Market�Profile�

Vertical Solutions (Vert): The vendor offers industry-specific capabilities or content integrated in a software application. This functionality can be the vendor's sole focus, or it can be in addition to more generic offerings.

Cloud: The vendor offers a hosted/SaaS version of their product (indicated with an 'H' after the checkmark), or a true cloud solution. An 'S' indicates that only selected modules are cloud-enabled.

Mobile Access (Mob): The vendor supports mobile access. Consumption only access is indicated with a 'C' after the checkmark. An 'S' indicates that only selected modules support mobile access.

The Extended Vendors

Adaptive Planning

Adaptive Planning provides easy to use, cloud-based performance management solutions designed for organizations ranging from small and mid-sized companies to enterprise class corporations, which currently comprise about 25% of their business. This solution is a strong alternative to spreadsheet-based planning and reporting processes. Their recently released financial consolidation module is a full-featured and intuitive solution designed for accountants. With the incorporation of MyDials which Adaptive Planning acquired last year, and the new consolidation capabilities, their offering is now the first fully integrated cloud-based business intelligence and performance management solution. Adaptive Planning also offers a Sales Forecasting and Analysis application for sales performance management. Adaptive Discovery provides data visualization and analytics and allows for real-time access and drill-down from an iPhone. Recent enhancements include a process tracker and additional collaboration capabilities as well as easy integration of external operational data into the analytics tool. There are pre-developed models for several industries including insurance, healthcare, and manufacturing. Available direct from Adaptive Planning in North America and the U.K., and via a large global partner network including NetSuite, which offers a specialized version of Adaptive Planning. With relatively low per user per year pricing, a rapid implementation, and without need for hardware or IT support, Adaptive Planning offers a robust solution with a low total cost of ownership.

The Host Analytics Decision Platform™ enables fact-based decision-making taking into account both potential positive and negative outcomes. This comprehensive offering includes the ability to easily integrate external data for benchmarking, currency rates, and economic indicators. The product is updated on a quarterly basis and the most recent release offers an enhanced financial package publisher, tools for self-service reporting, new financial close and disclosure features, and more powerful and granular workflow capabilities. The solution's embedded business intelligence capabilities allow for powerful operational analytics. The vendor offers an Enterprise edition and a lower cost Professional edition. Host Analytics is designed to meet the needs and user requirements of midmarket organizations and large enterprises, through a subscription based on-demand solution with implementation costs that are a fraction of traditional on premise alternatives.

IBM Cognos

IBM Cognos’ solutions help link financial and operational initiatives to a company's overall strategic plan including financial planning, budgeting, scorecarding, consolidation and disclosure management, along with reporting and analysis functions that layer on top of a variety of transactional systems. Last year's Varicent acquisition is now IBM Cognos Incentive Compensation Management. IBM Cognos Express, based on in-memory analytics engine TM1, continues to provide integrated planning, reporting, and analysis capabilities for the midmarket . BM Cognos TM1 provides the same functionality including profitability modeling tied to planning, but is designed for larger organizations. IBM Cognos Insight rounds out the core line-up and provides personal business analytics. In addition IBM Cognos Controller supplements the core product set with specialized functionality to enable an organization to close, consolidate, report, and file. IBM Cognos FSR is an integrated reporting and disclosure management platform which automates the creation of content-rich, enterprise-wide reports and complex regulatory and statutory disclosures, including XBRL. To complete the picture the IBM Smarter Analytics Signature Solution - CFO Performance Insight provides deep insight into business performance through reporting, what-if analytics and an advanced capability - temporal causal modeling which automatically uncovers relationships between business metrics based on historical data and projects their future state based on the momentum of the business. IBM Cognos offers performance management blueprints (pre-defined models) to address the needs of specific functional areas and industries.

Infor

Infor offers a unified, closed-loop performance management solution set that includes budgeting & forecasting, reporting & analysis, financial consolidation (from close to publish), planning, and strategic planning. Their dashboards allow for multiple sets of role-based KPIs for a truly personalized experience. Infor's Workforce Budgeting now supports position-based budgeting and expanded allocations and customizable attributes. Profitability analysis is included as part of planning and allows for activity-based models. They also address governance, risk, and compliance via Infor Approva. Infor has a focus on content with over 100 pre-built reports and pre-built analytics solutions by industry, application, and process area. Infor's recently added CPM Workbench provides reporting, data visualization including heat maps and circle packs, as well as form-based data entry on the iPad. Other Infor capabilities include enterprise search, in-context business intelligence, and enterprise collaboration. The Infor ION Business Vault streamlines data integration with published business information received in near real-time without going through an extract and load process. Infor provides performance management solutions for midmarket organizations through large enterprises.

Oracle Hyperion

Oracle's EPM solution includes performance management applications for strategy management, planning/budgeting/forecasting, financial close & reporting, disclosure management and profitability management at a granular level with micro costing, pre-built business intelligence applications (e.g. sales, marketing, HR, financial, supply chain analytics) along with a BI foundation. Oracle also offers pre-built planning applications for public sector and financial services companies, workforce and capital asset planning. Other capabilities include project financial planning, predictive planning feature based on Oracle Crystal Ball Predictor, and account reconciliations as part of the financial close management application. New this year Oracle now offers a tax provisioning application built on Hyperion Financial Management. Hyperion's Data Relationship Manager enables centralized management of the chart of accounts across multiple systems. Hyperion Planning takes advantage of Oracle Exalytics for fast in-memory planning and analytics. Oracle also offers its Financial Management Analytics which are pre-packaged mobile-ready dashboards for Finance executives. SAP BusinessObjects

SAP AG offers a broad portfolio of enterprise performance management solutions under its SAP BusinessObjects brand including Strategy Management, Planning Budgeting and Forecasting, Financial Consolidation and Reporting (BPC), Disclosure Management, Dashboards, and Profitability and Cost Management along with comprehensive business intelligence, Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC), Enterprise Resource Planning, and data warehouse solutions. Taken together they are designed to enable a company to strategize and plan, analyze and optimize, close and disclose. SAP's BPC solution can be deployed on the SAP NetWeaver platform or the Microsoft platform with a common web 2.0 client. BPC NetWeaver powered by SAP HANA leverages multi-threading and in memory processing for high performance. SAP is executing on its mobile first strategy and recently released EPM Unwired which makes BPC available for iPad access for both viewing and entering data. Citizen Insight is a new mobile app providing strategy management to municipalities. SAP is focused on content delivery and offers extensive applied analytics pre-packaged vertical and line of business solutions as well as rapid deployment solutions consisting of content and consulting, and financial close starter kits all of which serve to reduce time and costs involved in rolling out a new system. While the main performance management product line is designed for large organizations SAP also offers the Edge editions of Planning and Consolidation, Strategy Management, and business intelligence priced and packaged for the midmarket.

The Comprehensive Vendors

Axiom EPM

Axiom EPM provides a unified and comprehensive performance management solution for budgeting, capital planning, strategic planning, reporting, scorecards/dashboards and consolidations. This solution also includes specialized functionality for detailed profitability measurement which in healthcare organizations can be used to analyze patient-level profitability. An HTML5-based web client allows for live tablet access with transactional drill-down and data-driven alerts. New this year is an enhanced scenario modeling wizard designed to make this powerful capability available to a wider range of users. Axiom EPM has also upgraded their dashboards with new data visualization options and interactive capabilities. The vendor has recently released an adapter specifically for WebFOCUS to enable business intelligence users to easily access performance management data. While Axiom EPM leverages the latest .NET technology and embraces the power of spreadsheets, there is an alternative desktop mode available that does not require a spreadsheet. Although this solution is applicable to all industries, added capabilities have been developed for several verticals including banks and healthcare organizations.

Centage Budget Maestro® provides integrated budgeting, forecasting, performance reporting and analytics solutions designed to meet the needs of small to mid-sized businesses or divisions within larger organizations. The Budget Maestro solution set now includes advanced driver-based planning, modeling, dynamic reforecasting, revenue planning, tracking of detailed cost, inventory, bookings, and deferred revenue, as well as workforce planning. Recently introduced Analytics Maestro enables more powerful user-defined analysis and metrics tracking. The solution is designed for self-installs with minimal consulting and a new quick-start budget wizard. Budget Maestro’s performance management solutions can be deployed either as client server or hosted access via Citrix.

Longview/Exact Longview, a stand-alone division of Exact Software, provides a unified, all in one solution for strategic planning, budgeting/forecasting, management reporting, complex modeling, financial consolidation, XBRL reporting and disclosure management optimized for high performance large scale enterprise deployments. The company also has a comprehensive tax provisioning, planning and reporting application that is fully integrated with the solution but can also be purchased stand alone. The Longview solution provides strong analysis capabilities including break-back analysis, goal seeking and causal analysis. The interactive dashboard is available via an iPad with live data retrieval and drill down. The Longview Smart Client technology allows for creation of fast browser-based in memory installation-free apps. Initial apps from Longview include long-range planning, salary planning, and net income analysis for banks. For MicroStrategy users Longview is implemented as a project, using Longview’s BI-optimized ODS (Operational Data Store) capabilities, and offers integrated BI and advanced reporting capabilities; advanced profitability analytics are delivered through a partnership with Acorn Systems.
