Veniamin Kostitsin was born in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, in winter of 1949 and spent the first years of his life in Norilsk, near the polar circle, where his parents’ family sought refuge from the prosecution of the Soviet government. In 1964, aged 15, he enrolled at the Grekov College of Fine Arts in Odessa, today Ukraine, where he strived to develop the artistic abilities and inter-ests he had pursued ever since child-hood. His relocation to Moscow, the capital of the Soviet Union, in 1971, would give him a broader stage in the arts and provide greater opportunities in his ambition to deepen the academic artistic education he sought. An interest in painting and film brought him to the Moscow State Institute of Cinematography where he graduated with honors in art directionin 1978. His graduation project “Peter The Great” re-mains one of the best the school has ever seen. Still a student his work was exhib-ited as early as 1973 and he participated in several exhibitions of young artists held in the then capital of the Soviet Union. His work received early recognition in 1975 when a series entitled “The Old Moscow” was awarded a diploma of excellence by the Russian Academy of Fine Arts. Two years later in 1977 his cycle “The Russian North” received crit-ical acclaim when it won an award at

a competition held by the Academy of Fine Arts of St. Petersburg. While individual shows were rare in the Soviet Union, Veniamin Kostitsin participated in several group exhibi-tions between 1973 and 1978. His work was included in 14 public displays and almost as many individual exhibitions. His paintings were purchased by private collectors as well as state museums of the Soviet Union such as the

“Russian Museum” in St.Petersburg, the “Tretiakov Gallery” and the “Museum of the Academy of Fine Arts” in Moscow, the “Krasnoyarsk Municipal Museum of Fine Arts” and the “Polenov Estate Museum” in Tula county. To ensure his artistic independence Veniamin Kostitsin pursued a successful career as an illustrator of books, collab-orating with major publishing houses of the Soviet Union. The artist has illustrated over 20 books, the combined published editions of which amount to over 15 million copies. Editions with illustrations by Veniamin Kostitsin remain in print in Russia to this day and have been published in over 15 coun-tries around the world. In 1989, in anticipation of the radical changes approaching the then Soviet Union and soon to be Russian Feder-ation, the artist decided to leave Mos-cow in order to broaden his horizon as well as to ensure the safety of his fam-

ily. His path led him via Ljubljana and Belgrade, where he exhibited at Galleries Vid, Nosorog et al. in 1989, to Vienna and Baden, which since 1990 has been his main residence.

Austria has become a second artistic nourishing ground for the painter. In over 30 exhibitions in Vienna, Baden and Zürich he has presented works painted in Austria, France, the United Kingdom, Luxemburg, Israel, Morocco, Germany and his native Russia, which he revisits regularly. His main mediums remain Acrylics, Oil as well as Gouache, Ink and other ma-terials on paper with a broad range of subjects influenced by life in the countries he travels. Paintings from Russia, Western Europe — Vienna, Zürich, London and the Middle East enjoy the most vigorous popularity. Occa-sionally he works on commission and is regularly traded in different auction houses across central Europe. His exhibitions are often favorably covered by the press and enjoy popularity with critics and visitors. Over the past decades Veniamin Kostitsin’s paintings found their path into private and public collections worldwide while the artist continues to expand his oeuvre while constantly advancing and expanding his personal style and technique.
