The countless
canals of Venice are part of Venice’s charm and fame.

• The heart of the city of about 80 meters wide by 170 long, but a little irregular.
• Gothic building located in the eastern end of San Marcos Square.
• Its two most visible facades look towards the Venetian Lagoon.
• San Giorgio Maggiore (Saint George Mayor) is a basilica on the small island of the same name, opposite the Piazzetta in Venice.
• The first structure to cross the Grand Canal was a pontoon bridge, built in 1181 by Nicolò Barattieri. It was called “Ponte della Moneta” (Coin Bridge).
• Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant and explorer who, along with his father and uncle, was one of the first Westerners who travelled the Silk Road to China .
