Holiday Season Fun Facts to know
Santa’s Reindeer are most likely all female. According to Alaska’s Department of Fish & Game, both male and females grow antlers in the summer, but the males drop their antlers at the beginning of the winter.
The original miracle of Hanukkah was that a com-mitted band of people led a successful uprising against a much larger force, paving the way for Jewish independence and perhaps keeping Juda-ism itself from disappearing. It’s an amazing story, resonant with America’s own founding, that offers powerful lessons about standing up for one’s con-victions and challenging those in power. The word Hanukkah means “dedication”, as in dedication or rededication of the temple in Jerusalem in 165 b.c.

H anukkah is an eight-day Jewish festival also known as the Festival of Lights. Jews observe the festi-
val by lighting one candle on a nine-branched menorah each day. This year, Hanukkah will begin on
the evening of Sunday, December 6th, and end on the evening of Monday, December 14th.
The word Hanukkah means 'rededication' and commemorates the Jews' struggle for religious freedom
when the leaders of a Jewish rebel army called the Maccabees rose up against their Greek-Syrian
oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt of 167 BC
The uprising spanned three years until the Maccabees gained control of Jerusalem. They wanted to
rededicate the desecrated temple, but could find only one container of the sacred oil they needed which
had the seal of the high priest still intact. The candelabrum is required to burn throughout the night every
night but although there was only enough oil for one day, the candles miraculously stayed alight for eight
days – the time needed to prepare a fresh supply of kosher oil for the menorah. This event became
known as 'the miracle of the oil' and is now marked with an eight-day festival.

SAFETY TIPS
Would you buy an emergency kit from this man? Truthfully,
you do not have to, our school already has. Each
classroom should now have their very own backpack
complete with emergency materials to weather the next
Earthquake, Power Outage or, God forbid, Fire at your
school site. Contact your site administrator if you do not
recognize this backpack as part of your classroom
inventory. (pictured above is Community Rep & Jimmy
Olsen look alike, Stephen Seldin.) Many thanks to
Mr. Seldin for his hard work organizing our emergency
supplies!
