Time flies. A cliché the size of Florida but nevertheless it’s very

true indeed. Ask Margriet, Margo and Fulvia, the three musketeers

behind Ventura Lambrate. They themselves are still surprised they

are on the brink of the fifth edition of celebrating design on the same

location they started out in 2010. But before getting all sentimental

on us, we asked them what today should be the must-sees.

They came up with:

Things we’d love to forgetAfter five years there are plenty of stories to tell. Sad stories, epic

fails, tales of wonder, funny little accidents and our favourites: all

the events they’d rather forget. Today we bring you a few of these

unforgettable stories.

1 2013. Rob Vollenberg, father of Magriet, snogs his first man

(it is whispered it was in fact one of the editors of your tabloid).

2 The cocktail all the girls of Organisation in Design like most during

their night on the town turned out to have an ominous name:

Deep Throat. And, oddly enough, they love it.

3 Every year Margriet and Margo spend one evening at their apart-

ment taking a footbath. Would we like to forget this frightful image.

4 Eyjafjallajökull is a volcano on Iceland. It erupted in 2010.

And not only in Iceland. European air traffic came to a standstill.

Margriet and Margo had to go home by touring bus. As it goes,

touring busses are driven by touring bus drivers and they love

loud and simple music. Leading to a 15 hour sing-a-long trip back

home. They will never forget.

These men made the Mosa

Not meant to be wornWorking on the intersection between fashion design and visual art, Danish fashion designer Nikoline Liv Andersen creates elaborate gar-ments that are not meant to be worn. Instead, they are almost a stage for experimentation and for telling stories about human nature and our way of life. The interplay between what is natu-ral and what is artificial is a big part of her work, since she loves experimenting with materials and fabrics, always searching for new ways to transform artificial materials such as straws and nails into something that looks organic. A characteristic example of her work is her collection of Rococo-inspired wigs decorated with monkeys, ‘The Dance of the Deaf and Dumb Eye’ (2011), which are on show during Ventura Lambrate as part of the MINDCRAFT exhibition of Danish design in Milan.

‘Through my work I’m always questioning the meaning of life and trying to understand why we are placed on earth when we are going to die anyway. At the same time though I’m always in my own craft, my clothes-making, searching for a magical moment. The way I see the world is always a huge inspiration for me, but whether other people understand my point of view is less important. I want people to reflect on their own.’

Sander Lucas, graduated at Design Academy Eindhoven in 2002, runs his own design company Lucas & Lucas, and once a week he is coach at the department Industrial Design at TU/e to advice students about design. ‘It is really interesting to see how students always integrate innovative technology to create an intelligent product. Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) introduces a brand new master: Design Curating and Writing. Louise Schouwenberg, Co-Head of this new Master program, explains how it distinguishes itself from similar pro-grams: ‘Unlike other courses that are limited to one expertise, design history or design criticism, this program deals with both curating practices as well as reflective and writing practices.’

Collaboration between students of this new master and the three Design Departments is essential. All of them will be stimulated to share and improve their process in order to enhance the final results. This inno-vative view on education will develop tomorrow’s theorists and curators.
