NATIONS

• Japan is largest fish-eating nation in the world, consuming 7.5 billion tons of fish a year, or about 10 percent of the world's catch. This is the equivalent of 30 kilograms a year per person. Their nearest rivals the Scandinavians consume only around 15 kilograms per person. The Japanese consume so much fish that Japan has traditionally controlled the world prices for seafood with it huge demand.

• By other measures Japan is still the largest fishing nation. According to a National Geographic survey the largest harvesters of fish (metric tons) were: 1) Japan (7.5 million); 2) China (7 million); 3) Peru (6.7 million); 4) Chile (6.5 million); 5) Russia (5.2 million); 6) the U.S. (5 million).

• China's fishing industry is stepping up the worldwide search for new fishery resources as competition for depleted global fish stocks intensifies among leading fishing nations. After boosting its marine catch in the late 1990s to become the world's largest fishing nation

• Peru's rich fishery has been utilized since ancient times, but it was not until the post-World War II decades that an extensive export industry developed. Peru's fishing industry rapidly expanded in the 1950s to make the country the world's foremost producer and exporter of fish meal.

• Although a large variety of fish are caught offshore, the rapid growth was primarily in the catching of anchovies for processing into fish meal. The fish meal boom provided a major stimulus to the economy and accounted for more than a quarter of exports in the mid1960s .

• Russia is fast becoming a well developed fishing nation. Last year Russian trawlers caught over 4.1 million tons of fish, an amount not seen for almost 20 years. • It has now risen from ninth to sixth in

the world fishing league table. The Russian Fishing Agency states that the country's fish catches were returning to the levels of 1991 when the industry was at its peak.

• As with other countries, the 200 nautical miles (370 km) exclusive economic zone (EEZ) off the coast of the United States gives its fishing industry special fishing rights. It covers 11.4 million square kilometers (4.38 million sq mi). This is the largest zone in the world, exceeding the land area of the United States.

• According to the FAO, in 2005 the United States harvested 4,888,621 tones of fish from wild fisheries and another 471,958 tones from aquaculture. This made the United States the fifth leading producer of fish after China, Peru, India and Indonesia, with 3.8 percent of the world total.

The Northwest Pacific Region is considered the richest fishing area in the world.

Sulu Sea• The Sulu-Sulawesi

Ecoregion is of enormous ecological and economical importance, featuring productive ecosystems such as coral reefs, sea grass beds and mangrove forests.

Visayan sea• The Visayan Sea is located

centrally in the Philippines surrounded by its inland provinces of

• Cebu, Masbate, Iloilo and Negros Occidental. It has been defined as one of the biggest and

• most productive fishing grounds in the country. The diversity of its resources has drawn

• various activities resulting in the decline in marine and coastal resources due to unabated exploitation.

Malampaya Sea• Located at the northwestern

part of the Province covering an area of about 200,155 hectares 56% (111,379 has.), the Malampaya Sound and Seascape Protected Area is made up of terrestrial and coastal /marine areas. Thus, it is ecologically and economically important both as a watershed and a rich fishing ground. In the past, it is dubbed as the s"Fishbowl of the Philippines" a cliché' that Palawan as a whole is rich in marine resources.

Manila Bay• Manila Bay is a natural

harbor which serves the Port of Manila (on Luzon), in the Philippines.The bay is considered to be one of the best natural harbors in Southeast Asia and one of the finest in the world. Strategically located around the capital city of the Philippines, Manila Bay facilitated commerce and trade between the Philippines and its neighbouring countries,becoming the gateway for socio-economic development even prior to Spanish occupation

San Miguel Bay• The San Miguel bay is a

shallow, estuarine body of water with an area of 1,115 square kms. It is bounded by seven coastal municipalities that include Mercedes and Basud in Camarines Norte, and Sipocot, Cabusao, Calabanga, Tinambac and Siruma in Camarines Sur.

• The main sources of income of residents are agriculture, fishery and forestry.

Sibuguey Bay• Fishing enthusiasts

interested in fishing near or at Sibuguey Bay should print out the Google map and take it with them on their fishing trip. This could be one of the best fishing or outdoors adventure locations in the regions of Asia/Pacific.

Tayabas Bay• The coast of Sariaya lies within

Tayabas Bay, which is known as a spawning ground for various marine species but also the venue for overfishing and illegal fishing operations.

• With climate change compounding the problem, fish catch declined noticeably beginning in 2008, forcing some fishermen to resort to the use dynamites or find other jobs.

• Tayabas Bay as a major fish producer.

Moro Gulf• The study looked at the

10 fish species commonly harvested in the Davao Gulf: matambaka, tamban, moro-moro, caraballas, bilong-bilong, lapu-lapu, danggit, molmol, talakitok, and maya-maya. 

• Of these species, with the exception of the maya-maya , the harvest numbers for all other species was on the decline.

Lamon Bay • Fishing in Lemon Bay is a

wonderful experience as it offers inlets, bays, tidal creeks, beaches grass flats, bridges, docks, mangrove islands, and oyster bars. This diversity allows anglers to fish many techniques from live bait consisting of shrimp, pinfish, crabs, white bait, cut bait, or using artificial lures. While fishing lemon bay you can expect to fish for shook, trout and redfish although it is not uncommon to catch tarpon, cobia, jacks, mackerel and snapper in fact lemon bay is home to over 200 species of fish

Samar Sea• Samar Sea is drawn on the

National Geospatial Agency (NGA) Map.

Classification of Fisheries:

there are three categories depending upon the place where fishing is undertaken.

1) Inland Fishery

• Places where fish are taken in fresh water, like lakes, rivers, and streams.

2) Coastal Fishery

•Baybayin, palaisdaan

3) Offshore or deep fishery

• Offshore fishing is when you fish in deep water areas on the edges of ocean currents. This is where big-game fishing, like billfish and tuna is done.
