INTRODUCTION
Assalam-u-Alaikum and a very warm welcome to all the medical students of
the first year MBBS in a new module. The cardiovascular module has been
developed as a connuaon of integrated medical curriculum in Yusra Medical
and Dental College, Islamabad. It will be covered in 7 weeks in shaa Allah.
This module will comprehensively cover anatomical, physiological and
biochemical aspects of cardiovascular system with input from the departments
of surgery, medicine, pharmacology, pathology and community medicine.
This module features the anatomy and development of heart and circulatory
system. In physiology, aer learning the physiological funcons of the healthy
heart and the variaons in its funcons during illness in previous module, this
module has been planned to study the organizaon of cardiovascular system,
regulaon of blood flow, blood pressure and the related pathophysiology.
Hyperlipidemias play a pivotal role in pathogenesis of atherosclerosis leading to
ischemic heart disease. Also cardiac enzymes have a key role in diagnosis,
treatment and prognosis of ischemic heart diseases. In biochemistry students
will be learning the structural, funconal and biomedical importance of lipids
and enzymes.
3
General Learning Objecves:
By the end of this module, the students will be able to:
ANATOMY
· Explain the major anatomical features of heart and mediasnum.
· Describe the gross structure, development and histology of heart and major blood
vessels.
PHYSIOLOGY
· Explain the organizaon of cardiovascular system.
· Describe the local blood flow control mechanisms.
· Explain the regulaon of blood pressure and cardiac output.
· Relate the pathophysiology of congenital and acquired cardiac dysfuncons.
BIOCHEMISTRY
· Explain the structure and funconal importance of lipids.
· Discuss the role of enzymes in health and disease.

b. Small group teaching will include interacve tutorials(SGIS)
c. Problem – based learning sessions (PBL) or Case based learning sessions (CBL).
d. Praccal sessions will comprise sessions on early exposure to clinical methods and
praccal laboratory demonstraons.
e. Seminars on different topics, in which students will give oral presentaons on different
aspects of the allocated topics.
f. Directed self learning (DSL): Students are pre advised the topics and they study them
under supervision.
g. Self-directed learning sessions (SDL): This is the me during which students are
expected to revise what they have learnt in the class, clear their concepts by consulng
different text books, reference material and prepare their assignments and projects.
h. Skill laboratory: Students learn medical skills in lab e.g. CPR(cardiopulmonary
resuscitaon)

End of block exams
1. During the academic years of 1st and 2ndMBBS, there will be 3 end-of-block exams each year. The
results of these block exams will carry 30% weightage as the internal assessment for the final
professional examinaons of the 1st and 2nd MBBS years.
2. Each end-of-block exam will have following paern:
a) There will be two theory papers, one for Module I and one for Module II for each block.
b) These integrated theory papers will have components of following subjects:
i. Three horizontally integrated subjects i.e. anatomy, physiology and biochemistry
ii. Quesons from longitudinally integrated subject of community medicine and other
vercally integrated clinical speciales.
c) The paern of integrated theory paper will be as following:
i. 50 MCQs – 1 mark each (most of the MCQs will be one best type, scenario – based)
ii. 10 SEQs – 5 marks each (Most of SEQs will be scenario – based)
d) The paern of the OSPE will be as following:
i. 10 OSPE staons based on contents of Module – I 10 marks each
ii. 10 OSPE staons based on contents of Module – II 10 marks each
Summary of marks
Two Theory Papers: MCQs: 50 (1X50) = 50 Marks SEQs: 10 (5X10) = 50 Marks ____________________________
100 X 2 = 200 Marks ____________________________
OSPE:
- 10 staons of module I: 10X10 = 100 Marks - 10 staons of module II: 10X10 = 100 Marks ____________________________________________
