Veritas 10, 3 August 2018

Welcome to Term 3. During the recent break, all parents would have received their child’s report with the exception of Year 9 which will arrive in the near future. This report allows you to discuss progress with your child and spend time writing some realistic but aspirational goals for Semester Two. Student reflection is essential so that your child can take notice of, and accept responsibility for their own learning. If we want to develop an even stronger learning culture we need to bring our students into the discussion.

In looking ahead this term, we have a number of different activities, events and opportunities for our students. On Wednesday of this week, some students are involved with Aspire, a Diocesan production by the name of Dark Matter. These students have been preparing this for the past six months, including giving up valuable time both during holidays and weekends. I wish the following students all the best in this week’s productions, along with three staff members who have been actively involved; Jess Lopez, Gillian Rutherford and Pippa Hartshorne.

Drama: Paige Harrison (10)

Vocal: Aysha Taylor (10), Angus O’Connor (9), & Mazvita Takawira (7)

Design: Sarah Malone & Hannah Sam (10) & Jasmine Hole (9)

Music Ensembles: Miriam Newman (9), Jacob Anderson (7) & Bailey Wade (10)

On the sporting front, congratulations to Logan Badger in Year 10 who has been selected for the 1st XV for NSW Gener-ation Blue Under 16s rugby union. We wish Logan well when he competes at the National Championships on the Gold Coast next month.

On Tuesday evening, the School held a Stage 5 Information Evening, which included relevant faculties showcasing the wonderful array of opportunities available to our students through elective choices. Such opportunities include the Annual CAPA Immersion to Sydney and PASS excursion to Thredbo which take place this term. Thank you to Mrs Em-ma Tierney, Assistant Principal (Teaching & Learning), Coordinators and staff in attendance who supported this event.

Next Monday, we look forward to acknowledging those students who displayed diligent and sustained effort throughout the first Semester. The Awards Ceremonies across all year groups provides us with an op-portunity to recognise and celebrate both effort and achievement for students during the first six months of 2018.

I have provided some images within this edition of Veritas to highlight progress in relation to construction of the hall. In addition to the build-ing project involving the hall and associated new learning spaces, stu-dent toilets and the refurbishment of the Food Technology Room, the School is also purchasing tiered seating which is currently being placed at the rear of the basketball courts. This will allow PDHPE lessons to have a practical and usable space in this area. It will also provide a com-fortable space for students during break times and as spectators while the House Competition is taking place.

I wish all students and families a very rewarding and enjoyable term ahead. Your continued support is very much appreciated as we continue to strive to provide the best possible care for our students.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability

Our school is participating in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) on School Students with a Disability or Learning Difficulty.

This ongoing Data Collection is taking place in Catholic, Government, and Independent schools across Aus-tralia, and will provide valuable information about supports required for a broad group of students. This will enable Australian and State governments to better target support and resources in schools. This in turn will help schools give students with disability the support they need.

The Data Collection is not limited to students with diagnosed disabilities. It uses a very broad definition of disability, taken from the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, which describe a broad range of health and learning conditions for which schools are required to provide ‘reasonable adjustments’ to support students to participate on the same basis as other students.

The Data Collection will take place every year and will commence during Term 2. We are in the process of identifying students for whom we make adjustments. No personal information about any student will be included in the data collection.

Importantly, no in-school identification takes place whereby your child is identified to his/her peers. It remains highly confidential information shared between teachers only.

Should your child be identified within this group, the school and will be in contact with you to discuss the adjustments we are making for your child. You will then have the opportunity to opt IN or opt OUT of the NCCD registration process.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Sarah Howard (Learning Support Teacher/NCCD Coordinator) at [email protected] should you require further information.

Assistant Principal - Wellbeing

I read an article recently written by current Wallaby coach Michael Cheika about the importance of building a culture within a community. Cheika is not your average Rugby coach, a successful business man in the fashion industry, Cheika has looked to the success of other businesses, organisations and communities and has brought these traits into the Rugby clubs that he has coached. Of interest to me were his thoughts on our ability to “focus” and “authentically connect”. Through studying what has made other communities thrive, Cheika explained that we are currently losing the ability to truly focus on detail and more importantly connect with each other in an authentic manner. Now, his teams all eat to-gether, there are no phones allowed and he has adopted a policy of no head phones!

During the week I spoke to Year 10 students about their time left at San Clemente and their willingness to maintain con-nections that are honest and truthful. The growing trend of walking around with ear buds in listening to …………..whatever it is young people listen to……….can send an immediate negative message of “I’m not connected, I am not focused!”. Stu-dents have reacted extremely positively to this message, not wanting to waste a moment of authentic connections within our community. I paraphrased Cheika who has coined “Cyndi Lauper won’t win you a game of football!” by saying “Drake won’t help you to keep learning or connect”. (Apparently Drake though is not as 2018 as I thought.) Whatever the music, I believe that this style of “relaxation” has its place – on the bus, relaxing at home, traveling to and from work. Within our community we pride ourselves on authentic relationships, and like other successful organisations, true connectedness leads to higher achievement.

I challenge all students to adopt the approach I have witnessed with Year 10 who are striving to make the most of every moment they have left within the walls of San Clemente. Get out of your mind/ear buds and into your life/community.

I trust our students enjoyed the slower pace that holidays bring and feel rested and re-energised ready for Term 3. The end of any term brings with it a sense of completion. Term 2 signifies the completion of Semester 1 courses for 2018 and the Semester 1 Reporting period. As with everything we complete, it is important to take the time to stop and re-flect on our achievements and evaluate what we did, how well we did it and what we can do to do even better in the future. In an upcoming PosEd session students will be reflecting on their learning achievements for Semester 1. This will provide a valuable opportunity to stop, take notice, be reflective and then determine personal goals for Semester 2.

Term 3 continues to be a busy and vibrant place for San Clemente. I visit classrooms regularly, this provides an oppor-tunity to engage in learning that is taking place and speak with students about their learning. I encourage you to speak with your children about their learning experiences. San Clemente students are blessed to be involved with enjoyable and diverse learning opportunities that will help them to establish excellent work habits. These practices will assist them with their future academic success.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)

It is important that all students bring their device to school EVERY DAY. If for any reason your child is unable to bring their device on a given day, we ask that you send with your child a note so a device can be loaned to your child. If a de-vice is being repaired we ask that you send your child in with a note and a device can be loaned on a short term basis too (Library). It is a student’s responsibility to present at the Library before Mentor with a note from home and borrow a device.

Stage 5 Elective Choices (Current Year 8 students)

REMINDER: Students are to submit their Elective preferences online by Monday. The webchoices are to be printed, signed and handed into the office to complete the process.

Reports (Year 9 students)

Due to exams being moved back for Year 9, Student Reports for Year 9 will be posted home early next week. Although there is not a formal Parent/Teacher/Student interviewing block allocated this term, you are still welcome to contact your child’s class teacher and arrange a meeting time. The best outcomes for students are achieved when school and home work together and we thank you for your ongoing support.

HSC Minimum Standard Tests Term 3 (Year 10 students)

For students who still need to sit the Online test to achieve the Minimum Standard in one or more areas listed, another opportunity will be offered in Term 3 (Weeks 4 & 5) for students to sit the relevant online test. Practice tests can be tak-en in Week 3 by registering with Ms Wakely.

Students are to email Ms Leticia Wakely if they would like to register to sit one or more of the tests this term. Students have two opportunities to sit the tests this year. This will be the second opportunity for students at San Clemente.

Please do not hesitate to make contact if you have any further questions regarding the HSC Minimum Standards.

Uniform: A reminder that hoodies are not to be worn underneath the school uniform. In cold weather, undergar-

ments may be worn but are not to be seen. Nose rings and studs are currently a popular accessory for young people. I

ask parents to support the school’s uniform policy, ensuring that only a clear stud is worn at school. Students are re-

minded that black, leather, polishable shoes are to be worn with academic uniform. These standards will be expected

and enforced up to including Year 10’s last day of school at San Clemente.

Important Dates for the remainder of 2018:

August 6th: Academic Awards (FULL ACADEMIC UNIFORM TO BE WORN)

August 17th: SFX Subject Selection closes

November 12th – November 16th: Semester Two Examinations

November 19th – November 23rd: Work Experience

November 26th – December 6th: Awareness Week

December 6th: Graduation at Wests City

Shout-outs:

Good luck to Paige Harrison, Sarah Malone, Hannah Sam,

Aysha Yuhermon-Taylor and Bailey Wade as they prepare

for the Aspire production this week.

Congratulations to Logan Badger who was recently selected

in the NSW U/16’s team for Rugby Union. Logan will com-

Nicholas Marsh – Year 10 Coordinator Wellbeing

I will long remember Retreat 2018 as a highlight of my time working with this group of young people.

The main aim for students attending this year’s retreat was to explore the concepts of reflection, con-

templation, clarity and direction. Students were able to consider the importance of deep/ broad life ex-

periences and connections, to help make meaning in their lives. Whilst at the retreat, students contin-

ued to develop their personal identity (strengths, characteristics) and social identity (faith, community)

throughout the experience. The feedback thus far from our retreat has been outstanding and observing

the group since returning from the holiday break, I have noticed a maturity and calmness that I am sure

is a result of our three days at Collaroy.

I was truly proud and blessed to be surrounded by young people so willing to engage with staff and par-

ticipate in the program. The students displayed their true potential and capabilities and I look forward to

seeing more of this attitude over the remaining months. Finally, I would like to remind students of our

theme for 2018 – With Open Eyes. Hopefully over the coming months, as you make important decisions

about your future education and/ or career, important social decisions and work to solidify relationships

with family, friends and trusted others, that you can remember some of the messages delivered at re-

treat.

Year 9 News

A new semester is upon us and it is the perfect opportunity for Year 9 to reflect and learn from Semester One. Semester One reports will be posted out at the end of the week. Year 9 Mentors will be spending time analysing reports and setting goals with students but I also encourage parents to sit down with their child and discuss their report. Identify areas that require improvement and most importantly how this improvement can be achieved. Areas could include, ensuring all homework and assessment tasks are completed on time and with maximum effort, revising study habits, preparing more thoroughly for examinations, improving attitude and effort in class and not being afraid to seek assistance in class. For those students who achieved pleasing results the challenge is to maintain this commitment, attitude and effort.

It is no secret that a healthy and happy student will perform better at school and in life in general. At San Clemente through our Positive Education program students are taught and reminded about the 5 Ways to Wellbeing.

Connect – Talk and listen, positive relationships, feel connected

Be Active – Exercise, get involved, MOVE

Take Notice – Be aware of the present moment, your thoughts and the world around you

Keep Learning – Learn new skills, use your strengths, embrace new experiences

Give – The smallest acts count, smile, say thank you, help somebody, volunteer I encourage you to have the 5 Ways to Wellbeing posted on your fridge as a reminder to your child and yourself about the key ingredients to improving personal wellbeing.

The start of a new term is also the perfect time to remind everyone about uniform expectations. Common uniform in-fringements include:

Wearing the wrong jumper or the school jumper with a “hoodie” exposed

Wearing a school shirt but with a long sleeve undergarment exposed

Trainers with academic uniform

Incorrect socks – black, white with logos, coloured socks and bed socks

Hair not tied back

Nose piercings

You can call me old fashioned but in my opinion a school uniform is to be worn correctly and with pride, as it sym-bolises a student’s commitment and sense of belonging to a school. I am very confident that no Year 9 student who has a part time job would dare wear the incorrect uniform to their workplace. I am asking parents to support the school in our constant battle with uniform. If you are ex-periencing any difficulties or require clarification on uni-form requirements/expectations, please contact me. A reminder to Year 9 parents, if you have any concerns at all please contact me at school on 4014 7300 or on the fol-lowing email address; [email protected]

A final thought Year 9,

“Eat Clean. Train Mean. Live Well.

Stay Positive. Be Happy!”

Year 7 Students

Welcome back to school for Semester Two, I hope all of our students enjoyed a restful and relaxing break. I spoke to many

parents throughout Semester One about the huge adjustment that high school life can be. There is no ‘normal’ timeframe

for this adjustment. Some students may take a week, some may take six months, and this is to be expected, as we are all

unique individuals. I am very proud of our Year 7 students, they continue to settle well and I am constantly witness to

their individual strengths shining through.

As our students’ lives (and adults for a matter of fact) get busier, it is easy to be stressed and as a result, our

mental health can suffer. There are a number of things you can do to look after and maintain your mental

health and wellbeing. For example, many people cope with stress by getting involved with sports, exercising,

meditating, or practising yoga or relaxation techniques. Others express themselves through art, such as poetry,

writing or music. What you eat might also affect your mood – a well-balanced diet will help keep you both phys-

ically and mentally healthy. I encourage all of our students and their families to make their mental health a daily

priority and use websites such as ‘headspace’ to help along the way.

Many students displayed their talents at the athletics carnival last week. It was great to see so many enthusiastic year 7

students running, jumping, cheering and throwing. Attendance, however, was a little lower than normal. A quick reminder

that these days are compulsory and also a great way to connect and be active within our community and also to be there

to support others as they give it their best. All the best to our diocesan athletes that will be competing soon!

All students should have received their reports around holiday time. I encourage families and students to read these re-

ports thoroughly and if you have any questions please contact the relevant subject teachers. Having read through many of

these reports, many students should be very proud of their achievements.

Careers Corner

Welcome to Careers Corner for Term 3. It is sure to be another busy 10 week period for both Year 9

and 10, with all Stage 5 students involved in a number of important activities both in and out of the

classroom.

In the classroom:

Year 9 – students are working towards becoming “work ready” by completing the associated program in class. Topics

such as positive communication, legal obligations, workplace misunderstandings, and harassment are just a few

of the things being covered throughout the 10-week program.

Year 10 – students are currently choosing their Year 11 subjects for 2019. Should ANY student run into difficulties

during this important time I would encourage them to arrange to see me at school to discuss their options.

Remember, when choosing HSC subjects, the following questions may be helpful;

What subjects am I good at?

Which subjects do I enjoy?

Do I want to go to University at some stage after I finish Year 12?

Year 11 2019 SFX students also have a number of important dates to remember;

Subject Selection Online (SSO) due Friday 10th August (Week 3).

Parent & Students COMPULSORY Subject/Pastoral Interview during October (Term 4 – Week TBC)

Student Half Day Orientation Visit to SFX late in Term 4 with date TBC

As always, a friendly reminder to ALL STUDENTS in Years 9 and 10 to;

Check daily, Read carefully, and Respond promptly!!!

Writing with a purpose Last Semester Year 7 English classes were busy studying the novel Blueback by Tim Winton. The focus of the study was on the environment and the sustainability issues raised in the novel. Several classes also focused on the art of letter writing and learnt how to write formal and informal letters. There were examples of the purpose of letter writing in the novel as Abel writes to his mum when he is at boarding school. One of the tasks for students was to write a letter to Tim Winton. They were to tell Tim a little bit about them-selves, explain to him what they enjoyed about the novel and how they intend to be more environmentally conscious. Many of the students were a little disbelieving that the letters were going to be posted to Tim. Many students also wrote excellent letters with some great ideas and thoughts around sustainability issues in the environment. Students were excited to receive a reply from Tim Win-ton...... a famous person actually responded!! He respond-ed to the students with a handwritten letter, some photos of Longboat Bay and a postcard for each student with his personal signature. What a great learning experience for all the students.

YEAR 9 VISUAL ARTS

Year 9 Visual Arts students have been learning about the ways people connect with each other and the world around them, during the first Semester unit "Connect". The most recent task involved developing their drawing skills while studying photo-graphs of one of their own eyes. The results were 25 fantasti-cally rendered realistic drawings, which will be on display at the annual Sight and Sound exhibition at the school at end of the year. Here are three exceptional works by Tayah Atkins, Sky Wood and Bella Nysten.

cult for those who live at Nelson Bay. Mrs Daly is prepared to

organise a bus to pick up competitors from the Bay and at vari-

ous pick up points on the way to school. Parents or students are

asked to let Mrs Daly know by Monday if this suits – please email

her. The return bus may not arrive in time for school buses, so,

just in case, parents will need to have another plan to get stu-

dents home. This will be explained again in the permission note.

Good luck to all competitors.

TERM 3 SPORT both normal and representative, begins on Friday. Unfortunately in the rep program, St Pius has had to

forfeit to us, as they have Parent/Teacher interviews. We also have had to forfeit Yr 9 and Yr 10 Netball as we are com-

peting in another competition. The rep sports this term are: Jr Boys and Girls Basketball and Oz Tag / Open Girls Soccer / Sr

Boys Soccer / Yr 9 Netball / Yr 10 Netball / Yr9/10 Boys Dodgeball. Training will take place instead of competition. Good

luck to all teams.
