UVM students tag Burlington's ash trees toraise awareness about EABBy Caitlin Cuscak,Vermont Forest PestFirst Detector CoordinatorCan you tell your ash from your maple?If you answered yes, then you're in theminority. It turns out most peoplecannot identify an ash tree andtherefore have no idea what sort ofimpact an invasive exotic insect such asthe Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) will haveuntil it's too late. So on September 18th,UVM students with the Community‐Based Natural Resource Managementclass took to the streets to flag and tagsome of Burlington's ash trees in order toraise awareness about the benefits these trees provide and thethreat of EAB. Interns Bring Initiatives New LifeVTUCF Hires Three Fall InternsThanks to funding from the USDA Forest Service, VTUCF will beable to support interns to work on six initiatives this year. This fall,we've hired three stellar individuals: 

Sam Gersie, Big Tree InternSam is a senior environmentalscience major at UVM, where healso studies forestry and geo‐spatial technologies. Originallyfrom New Jersey, Sam fell in lovewith the Vermont landscapeduring his first year at UVM.  Hehas held other internships both inVermont and at Hubbard BrookExperimental Forest in NH.  Thissemester, he will be revitalizingthe Vermont Big Trees Program,

digitizing historical documents, re‐measuring some of the largesttrees in the state and helping to promote the program.    Nicole Peruso, Energy‐Saving Trees InternNicole graduated from UVM in May 2013 with a degree inenvironmental studies. She is interested in sustainability education,curriculum development, and place‐based and service‐learningeducational pedagogy, and has been involved with projects atCharlotte Central School, Rock Point School, and Tuttle MiddleSchool. Working with VELCO, Nicole will be developing curricularmaterials and a program to promote and educate on the energy‐saving benefits of trees to K‐12 schools statewide.
