THE INSTITUTED LECTOR

Parishioner William Castro has been in preparation for several years now to be ordained a Permanent Deacon. He is now an Instituted Lector. The Instituted Lector is a minor order which is a stepping – stone to the major order of the Diaconate. As an

Instituted Lector it is expected that William will be read-ing frequently at Sunday Masses (at least twice a month), at Masses where the Bishop is present, such as Confirmation, at each of the celebrations of Holy Week, and at weddings and funerals. He is also now called up-on to give gospel reflections at the normal homily time at Masses other than Sunday Masses. The hope is that in preparation for all of these services, the Instituted Lector becomes more steeped in the Word of God which will continue to form him for his role as a Deacon who both reads the Gospel and delivers homilies.

William will primarily be serving as an Instituted lector at the 1:30pm Sunday Spanish Mass. He will offer Gospel reflections once or twice a month at the 7:00pm Monday Mass and at various other liturgies. As he is to be a deacon for the entire parish, he will occasionally be serving as Lector at the English Masses as well. This period of his formation will last a year, and then he will receive the minor order of Instituted Acolyte. His duties will then change again.

William has about 2 years left of formation to become a permanent deacon. As a community we accompany William both in practical matters - that is, providing the opportunities to minister in the many capacities that are required for his formation. And we accompany him even more especially with our prayers.

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS Next week, we will take up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the US are considered home missions because they are unable to fund essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support of this appeal helps ease the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayerfully

consider how you can support this appeal. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions.
