Hi...
The committee are working as hard as ever. The clubs dated constitution is getting a review, this years
Day of the Volkswagen is back on the agenda along with the monthly meets and cruises in the works,
with some special plans for the clubs 60th Anniversary! We have got more members and the numbers
on the committee (check out our mug shots) than ever which is very rewarding. When you see us out
don’t be shy come and have a chat.
The Munster Cruise #2 was a great success! Cruising down the lovely coast and through Fremantle be-
fore arriving was a great sight. The bands that supplied the tunes were awesome and we all partied on
into the late hours. A special thank you to the Brix Family of Munster garage for hosting the event
again. There are signals are that Munster Cruise #3 will be on again next year.
Remember to keep an eye on the Events Calendar on the website and our Facebook page.
The next major event that club members are attending is
Fairbridge festival.
On the same weekend is the Classic Car Show at
Whiteman Park. It is not too late to let us know if you
plan on showing your vehicle.

Wolfsburg, March 2014
Volkswagen is celebrating the
40th birthday of the most suc-
cessful European car of all time:
the Golf. To this very day, more
than 30 million vehicles of the
best-seller have been sold. From
day one, the Golf has reflected
technological progress. Whether
turbo engine, direct-injection en-
gine, electric or plug-in hybrid
drive system; whether ABS, ESC,
XDS or 4MOTION; whether Adap-
tive Cruise Control, City Emergen-
cy Braking, trailer stabilisation or
Automatic Post-Collision Braking
System; whether automatic air
conditioning, Dynaudio sound sys-
tem, touchscreen with proximity
sensor or LED headlights; whether
Trendline, Comfortline, Highline,
GTI, GTD or GTE – it was always
the Golf through which the most
important technologies and trends
of our time were democratised.
Golf I.
The first production Golf rolled off
the assembly line in Wolfsburg on
29 March 1974 and was available
at the Volkswagen dealers from
May onwards. Where for decades
the Beetle and thus rear-mounted
engines and rear-wheel drive had
dominated the scene, a new era
had now dawned: that of the
transversely mounted front engine
and front-wheel drive. This trend
had been heralded a short time
earlier by the Scirocco and – as
the first Volkswagen front-wheel
drive car, following the K70 that
was taken over from NSU – the
Passat, introduced in 1973. With
the launch of the Golf, the highest
volume vehicle category had now
also been switched to the new
technology.
As the successor to the legendary
Beetle, of which over 21.5 million
units were built, the Golf I, de-
signed by Giorgio Giugiaro and
Volkswagen Design, had to live up
to the immense expectations that
it would carry on the success sto-
ry of what until then was the
world’s most successful car. It
worked: The modern and reliable
drive concept, the excellent spa-
tial economy and ultimately the

design as well, won over the
market to such an extent that
production of the one-millionth
Golf was already being celebrated
in October 1976.
Like every Golf that would appear
after it, the first generation, too,
reflected the progress and auto-
motive trends. In launching the
first Golf GTI (in 1976), Volks-
wagen heralded the introduction
of greater dynamism in this class,
while the Golf D (naturally aspi-
rated diesel engine, 1976) and
the later Golf GTD (turbodiesel,
1982) marked the breakthrough
for diesel cars in the compact
segment. With the Golf Cabriolet,
introduced in 1979, Volkswagen
launched an open car on the
market that was at times the
best-selling open car in the
world. 6.99 million vehicles of the
first generation Golf, including all
derivatives such as the converti-
ble and the Jetta (at that time
structurally identical), were sold
– 0.87 million Golf cars per year.
Golf II.
It was the second generation Golf
that was the Volkswagen in which
the baby-boomer generation,
people who are now in their fif-
ties and sixties, learned to drive.
While its predecessor had already
become a favourite of all driving
instructors and learner drivers,
the second Golf had now become
firmly and inerasably established
in the minds of these temporary
allies. As of August 1983, they no
longer sat quite so close to each
other, since spatial utilisation had
been improved once more. As a
matter of fact: it was the Golf
that introduced the regulated cat-
alytic converter (1984), anti-lock
braking system (ABS, 1986) and
power-steering to the Golf class
and that could be ordered with an
all-wheel drive system for the
first time (Syncro, 1986). And as
far back as 1989, Volkswagen
was already unveiling a prototype
of this Golf with an electric drive
system and another with a hybrid
drive system. Including all deriv-
atives, a total of 6.3 million sec-
ond generation units were pro-
duced by the summer of 1991 –
that is, 0.79 million Golf cars an-
nually.
Golf III.
With the launch of the third gen-
eration of the Golf in August
1991, Volkswagen heralded a
new era of safety. The Golf III
was the first of the series to have
front airbags, starting in 1992,
while major advances in the area
of car body construction also re-
sulted in significantly improved
crash safety. In addition, numer-
ous other technological mile-
stones of the model range are
linked to the third Golf. Many
new features made their debuts
in this new Golf: the first six cyl-

trol, oxidation catalytic converter
for diesel engines (1991), the
first direct injection diesel en-
gines (TDI in 1993 and SDI in
1995) and side airbags (1996).
Likewise, ABS became a stand-
ard feature on all Golf models in
1996. In 1993, Volkswagen had
also introduced a new convertible
based on the Golf III, a new all-
wheel drive model (Syncro II)
and the first Golf Variant (an es-
tate). The third generation ended
in 1997. Including all derivatives,
a total of 4.83 million third gen-
eration units were produced, or
0.81 million per year.
Golf IV.
Under the direction of Hartmut
Warkuß, then Head of Design at
Volkswagen (Group), the clear,
precise design emerged for the
Golf VI that did justice to the his-
tory of the Volkswagen brand
more than ever before while set-
ting its course to the future. It is
in this era that the Volkswagen
design DNA has its origins. With
the debut of ESC (in 1998), the
car continued to democratise
safety. Also in 1998, Volkswagen
unveiled the first all-wheel Golf
with a Haldex clutch – the Golf
4MOTION. One year later, ESC
became a standard feature, ini-
tially in Germany. The first direct
-injection engine (FSI) and the
debut of the standard head air-
bag (window airbags) followed in
2002. Also in 2002, Volkswagen
launched the R32, with a top
speed of 250 km/h. It was this
top model of the range that in
2003 was the first to debut with
the revolutionary dual-clutch
gearbox (DSG). In the same
year, the fully galvanised Golf IV
made way on the production
lines for the Golf V. Including all
derivatives, a total of 4.99 mil-
lion fourth generation units were
produced – that is, 0.83 million
Golf cars annually.
Golf V.
This was the Golf that boasted
levels of comfort and dynamic
performance that left many a
competitor in its class way be-
hind in 2003. The same went for
the car’s quality. One factor that

underlines the stability of the la-
ser-welded bodywork was the 35
percent increase in torsion rigidi-
ty demonstrated when the Golf V
made its debut in 2003. On re-
quest, the Golf was now also
available for the first time with
side airbags – together with the
six standard airbags (front, side
front and window) there were
thus eight protective air buffers
on board. In terms of comfort as
well as dynamic performance, the
Golf V scored in numerous areas,
including: its new four-link rear
suspension, seven-speed DSG, bi
-xenon headlights, rain sensor
and panoramic sliding sunroof,
plus the debut of the first turbo-
charged direct injection petrol
engine in the Golf GTI (in 2004)
and the world’s first twincharger
(in the 2006 TSI), combining tur-
bo- and supercharger. In 2006,
the Golf Plus had its debut; in
2007, the CrossGolf, a new Es-
tate and the extremely fuel-
efficient Golf BlueMotion (4.5
l/100 km). Including all deriva-
tives, a total of 3.4 million fifth
generation units were produced -
that is, 0.68 million Golf cars an-
nually.
Golf VI.
In just four years, a further 2.85
million Golf cars had been pro-
duced by the end of July 2012,
based on the sixth generation of
the car launched in 2008. And
once again safety made great
advances too: the car body was
so rugged that it passed the Eu-
roNCAP crash test with flying col-
ours, gaining the maximum five
stars. There was now also a fur-
ther airbag fitted as standard:
the knee airbag for the driver.
Meanwhile, more TSI engines
and a transition among the tur-
bodiesel engines (TDI) from unit
injection to the common rail sys-
tem resulted in greater dynamic

Golf VII.
On 4 September 2012,
Volkswagen celebrated the world
premiere of the seventh Golf.
Just one day later, advance sales
of the car, a best-seller, began in
initial launch countries. Just three
weeks later, Volkswagen present-
ed the Golf for the first time to a
large audience at the Paris Motor
Show. The weight of the new Golf
was reduced by up to 100 kg,
thereby reversing the often cited
upward weight spiral. Fuel econo-
my was improved by a maximum
of 23 percent, depending on en-
gine selection. The new Golf TDI
BlueMotion consumes only 3.2
l/100 km (equivalent to 85 g of
CO2/km) under standard NEDC
conditions. Another innovation is
the 1.4 TSI with 103 kW / 140 PS
and automatic cylinder shut-off
(ACT: active cylinder manage-
ment). The combined fuel con-
sumption of this petrol engine
that is as sporty as it is sustaina-
ble: 4.7 l/100 km. In addition,
Volkswagen has equipped the
Golf with an entire armada of
new assistance systems on the
market – some as options and
others as standard. In 2014,
Volkswagen has electrified the
compact class with the Golf: the
all-electric e-Golf with a range of
around 190 kilometres is already
available to buy. In addition, the
new Golf GTE will be launched in
the autumn. Its plug-in hybrid
drive system achieves a standard
fuel consumption of 1.5 l/100
km; in all-electric mode, the Golf
GTE can be driven for 50 kilome-
tres.

World Premiere of
the T-ROC Volkswagen concept car pro-
vides preview of new SUV
range
Wolfsburg – On the evening be-
fore the Geneva International
Motor Show the Volkswagen
Group traditionally presents its
highlights. With the world premi-
ère of the T-ROC concept car the
Volkswagen brand is giving a
preview of a possible SUV range.
The striking features of the con-
cept car include its progressive
design, the front section with the
LED headlights and two remova-
ble roof halves.
With the Tiguan and Touareg
Volkswagen has in its model
range two of the most successful
SUVs (sports utility vehicles) of
European origin. In the future,
Germany's largest car manufac-
turer will be expanding this spec-
trum appreciably with new mod-
els in a variety of classes. Com-
ing up at the Geneva Internation-
al Motor Show (4th to 16th
March): the world première of
the T-ROC, a Golf-format concept
car positioned a step down from
the Tiguan. Following the
CrossBlue (USA), CrossBlue Cou-
pé (China) and also Taigun
(India) concept cars, Volkswagen
is once again giving a look ahead
to possible future SUV models.
The T-ROC follows a new design
line and interior style, with the
progressive design of the front
section being particularly striking.
The two-door vehicle also com-
bines the talents of an all-wheel
drive SUV - which doesn't capitu-
late even when faced with rocky
off-road tracks - with the sum-
mery airiness of a convertible.
The middle section of the roof
consists of two halves that with
just a few flicks can be taken off
and stowed in the boot. Front
and rear cameras, which are
backed up in the dark by LED
headlights, extend the driver's
field of vision.
Powered by a 135 kW / 184 PS
turbo-diesel direct injection en-
gine, the T-ROC is equipped with
three different driving modes:
'Street', 'Off-road' and 'Snow'.
The parameters of the 4Motion
drive train, 7-speed DSG (dual-
clutch gearbox), ABS, Hill Start
Assist and Hill Descent Control
vary depending on the mode se-
lected. The 2.0 TDI engine's fuel
consumption is a low 4.9 l/100
km, while maximum torque is
380 Nm. The vehicle body has
been designed based on the Mod-
ular Transverse Matrix (MQB).
Thanks to lightweight construc-
tion the SUV weighs just 1,420
kg. Visually striking features in-
clude the relatively short over-
hangs and the multi-part 19-inch
alloy wheels with size 245/45
tyres.

Multivan
Alltrack All terrain: concept vehicle
combines stylish nautical de-
sign with rugged off-road fea-
tures
Hannover / Geneva - Supreme,
effortless ease is the key to free-
dom. The Multivan Alltrack is an
outstanding example of this, as it
really is superbly equipped for
any task and every route. At the
harbour, it stylishly tows a boat
trailer, in the city it proves a spa-
cious, reliable partner that,
thanks to its elegant exterior, is
not out of place even in front of
the opera house, and by virtue of
its spacious interior it also pro-(Continued on page 24)

vides room for any shopping trip.
Finally - thanks to 4MOTION all-
wheel drive and off-road technol-
ogy – the Multivan Alltrack is just
as much a master of winding
roads as it is of off-road terrain.
The idea. Multivan Alltrack – the
name speaks for itself. A vehicle
for all roads and any track. And
above all: a Multivan. Its flexibil-
ity is legendary. That and its nu-
merous features ensure that eve-
ry conceivable task and any as-
sociated luggage can be handled
with ease, thus making it suitable
for even the most demanding of
transportation tasks. The design
of the Multivan Alltrack from
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles
differs significantly from other
models in the market for work-
horse vehicles by its high-gloss
turned 19-inch wheels, precisely
implemented details of the exte-
rior skin in “Moonstone Mother of
Pearl Effect” colour and the so-
phisticated impression of the in-
terior.
Well equipped. The robust front
and rear bumpers offset in grey
and with integrated underbody
protection in matt silver contrast
with the discrete, elegant exteri-
or, as do the wheel arches, pro-
tective side strips and boot sill
protector. This apparent contra-
diction is intentional - a metaphor
for the two worlds of the Multivan
Alltrack: turning in a first-class
performance both on the road as
well as off it. This concept has
also been consistently transferred
into the interior. It features high
quality, durable materials with
great functionality and the rug-
ged charm of a widely travelled
globetrotter: Finely stitched grey-
blue seats of the finest natural
leather by the Poltrona Frau
brand form a contrast to the dark
brown genuine wood boat floor
produced in “vinterio technolo-
gy”. The hand-width decorative
trim strip beneath the window's
edge that is framed in aluminium
is also made of this porous mate-
rial. This trim strip runs at hand-
rail height along both sides right
into the cockpit, thus forming a
visual link with the central, easy-
to-see infotainment system. Its
functions are accessed via a ca-
pacitive 8-inch touchscreen. Sup-
plying the desired sound quality
in the vehicle is a Dynaudio Sur-
round Sound system with a cen-
tre speaker.
A sturdy floor track system con-
tributes to the tremendous versa-
tility in the use of interior space.
Besides serving as a base for
movable individual seats in the
Multivan Alltrack, it can also be
used to securely mount a mobile
kitchen module, which may be
located either on the left side of
the vehicle or behind the front
seats – perpendicular to the di-
rection of driving. Along with a
cooling box, the module, which is
easy to install or modify, also
provides a gas cooker and sink
with fresh water tank. It can be
individually removed for use out-
side of the vehicle, or the entire
module can be stowed in the gar-
age if it will not be needed during
an upcoming journey.
At home off the beaten track. Of
course, the Multivan naturally
has more than just a striking ap-
pearance. The drive train gets its

power from a strong engine, too,
a 2.0 TDI (132 kW/180 PS), and
transfers it to the Haldex multi-
plate coupling mounted to the
rear axle. It has an approach an-
gle of 21° and a departure angle
of 15°. Together with its solid 19-
inch alloy wheels it is ready to
tackle extraordinary tasks.
Built to last. Volkswagen Com-
mercial Vehicles is underlining
with the Multivan Alltrack the
enormous potential of this
classic vehicle: built in the
state capital of Lower Saxo-
ny, the founder of this mar-
ket segment continues to be
the vehicle by which all oth-
ers in the class are meas-
ured. The combination of
reliable quality, efficiency,
flexibility and not least
classless appeal stands for
everything that customers
value about their Volkswagen
MPV. And have been valuing for
six decades and more.
This concept vehicle also empha-
sises Volkswagen Com-
mercial Vehicles' many
years of all-wheel drive
expertise: this began 29
years ago with the T3
Transporter - both as a
minibus and a van. For
the last five years, the
Caddy 4MOTION has
been peerless in its mar-
ket segment. Since
2010, the Amarok pick-
up has been setting new bench-
marks in its class, with its vari-
ants and capabilities being con-
stantly extended. And finally in
2012, the Crafter 4MOTION with
all-wheel drive from Achleitner
completed the model range.
And this has been done not just
for the sake of it, but in response
to genuine customer demand:
one in every five commercial ve-
hicles sold by Volkswagen in Eu-
rope is ordered with all-wheel
drive. No comparable manufactur-
er enjoys such popularity with
this technology.

Rally Mexico
Viva Mexico, viva
Volkswagen – One-two for
Ogier and Latvala
Faster and with greater stamina than Speedy Gonzales – Volkswagen en-joyed an outstanding double success at the Rally Mexico. In doing so, win-ners Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) and runners-up Jari-Matti Lat-vala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) cheated the regulations and extreme conditions at the third round of the FIA World Ral-ly Championship (WRC). En route to the seventh Volkswagen victory in a row, the two leaders in the World Championship laid the foundations for their one-two on the opening day. They were faced with the obstacle of being first and second onto the route. Despite this, they had still battled their
way to first and third place by the end of the first third of the rally. That all-action display was followed by a flaw-less second day, which saw Ogier and Latvala move to the top of the stand-ings and open up a substantial lead, which just kept growing. On the final day, Ogier and Latvala comfortably controlled the pace to claim the fourth one-two for the Polo R WRC in 16 out-ings in the World Rally championship. Ignoring the break between seasons,
this was the seventh victory in a row for Volkswagen. Come the end of the rally in Mexico, Ogier/Ingrassia were a mighty 5:28.6 minutes ahead of the best-placed non-Volkswagen driver.
The world’s fastest street sweeper: awesome effort from the Volkswagen duo The WRC regulations meant the two Volkswagen drivers were faced with a luxurious problem on the opening day of the rally. As first, second and fourth in the World Championship, they had the dubious honour of opening the route. In few other rallies is this such a major disadvantage as in Mexico. More and more of the layer of loose gravel is swept out of the way with every World Rally Car that passes. The disadvantage is calculated at about 0.1 seconds per kilometre and per competitor. However, the Volkswagen pairings of Ogier/Ingrassia and Latvala/Anttila produced an energetic display to negate this hin-drance. Eight of eleven stage wins went to Wolfsburg on day one alone.

Bonus points on the Power Stage, World Championship lead extended
in all three classifications
With victory in Mexico, Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia moved into the lead in the overall standings of the World Rally Championship – just ahead of their Volkswagen team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila. Ogier and Ingrassia lead both the Driv-er and Co-Driver classifications with 63 points, followed by Latvala and Anttila with 60 points. Between them, the two cars increased the lead in the Manu-facturers’ Championship significantly. Volkswagen now has 115 points to its name – 55 more than its closest rival Citroën. Andreas Mikkelsen/Mikko Markkula are fourth overall with 24 points.
XXL team performance – Polo R WRC #9 perfectly restored to work-
ing order
The day’s rallying twice ended ahead of schedule for Andreas Mikkelsen/Mikko Markkula (N/FIN). On Friday, the Volkswagen duo hit a stone when exiting a corner on the “El Chocolate” special stage and damaged the rear-right suspension, bringing their day to a premature end having previously been running second. On Saturday, a
mistake in the pace notes resulted in Mikkelsen/Markkula rolling their car when they cut too much off a corner and were flipped over by a hole in the road. Thanks to the outstanding job done by their mechanics, the number nine Polo R WRC was back as good as new by the time it took to the road for Sunday’s special stages. They managed to get the World Rally Car back into top condition within the three-hour time limit specified in the regula-tions. Mikkelsen/Markkula used the Sunday to gain as much experience as possible at rally pace, setting four top-three times in the process.
High altitude, heat, homework – Polo R WRC, the cleverest World
Rally Car
Absolutely reliable and equipped with an intelligent engine control unit, the Volkswagen Polo R WRC set the tech-nological benchmark at the Rally Mexi-co. The special stages took the teams from about 1,800 metres to 2,800 me-tres above sea level. The higher you get, the lower the air pressure, oxygen content in the air and cooling efficiency of the engine sink. At temperatures around the 30-degree mark, the objec-tive was to minimise the loss of perfor-mance. The Volkswagen engineers took care of the software intelligence of the World Rally Car from Wolfsburg well in advance of the rally in Central America. The engine control unit is used without modification from Monte Carlo right through to the final round in Great Britain.
Physical and mental strength the
key to success
Like their World Rally Cars, the Volkswagen drivers and co-drivers arrived at the Rally Mexico as well pre-pared as physically possible. Fitness was a key to success, particularly on the seven special stages at over 30 kilometres in length, which were tack-led at high altitude and in scorching heat. Here too, Volkswagen left noth-ing to chance: the staff at the sports clinic in Bad Nauheim were tasked with looking after the physical condition of the team. Fitness and diet plans, regu-lar performance tests throughout the season and comprehensive on-site care are part of the everyday rally rou-tine at Volkswagen.

Facts, facts, facts – Volkswagen up
there with the best
Volkswagen secured a place in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) rec-ord lists with victory number seven in a row. The wins in Australia, France, Spain and Great Britain last year were followed by triumphs in Monte Carlo, Sweden and Mexico this season to produce the second-longest winning run in WRC history. Sébastien Ogier claimed his 18th overall win in the World Rally Championship, with eleven of these successes coming in Volkswagen colours. Quotes after day three of the Rally Mexico Sébastien Ogier, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #1 “Mexico really is a fantastic country for us! I like the rally, and it seems to like me. I picked up my first win as a junior here back in 2008 and took overall victory with Volkswagen last year – and now here I am, back on the top step of the podium. It is a fantastic feeling. Our entire team did a sensa-tional job all weekend, and the Polo R WRC was once again super reliable and super quick in extreme conditions. I was hungry for this win after my mis-take in Sweden! That is why Julien and I refrained from taking any risks on the final day. We really wanted to get this win under our belts. And it goes with-out saying that I also wanted to get my hands on the Power Stage points. Alt-hough we will now have to act as street sweepers for the opposition at the next round in Portugal, the World Championship points are more im-portant than anything else.” Jari-Matti Latvala, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #2 “I am really very happy with second place. Having been first onto the route on day one, which meant we were quite a long way off the lead, we set our sights on a place on the podium. The Rally Mexico was hard work and also very demanding on the cars. The
Polo coped admirably with the stresses and strains of the high altitude and soaring temperatures, and our team also did a perfect job. Thanks for that. That was the best Rally Mexico so far for Miikka and me. We came through without any mistakes and finished run-ner-up for the first time. We are still almost level with our team-mates, with-out having to start first again in Portu-gal.” Andreas Mikkelsen, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #9 “A tough rally for us. Retiring twice is not exactly what we had in mind. I just made too many mistakes. Thanks to the great job done by my mechanics, I was still able to gain a few kilometres of experience at the Rally Mexico on Sunday, which will allow us to push hard again next year. All in all, we learned an awful lot here – unfortu-nately we did it the hard way. I will an-alyse it in detail over the coming days, and will prepare as well as possible for the coming rally in Portugal. We will come back stronger, and hopefully return to the podium there.” Jost Capito, Volkswagen Motorsport Director “A one-two in these difficult conditions and given the new regulations regard-ing the starting order is more than we had expected coming into the Rally Mexico. I take my hat off to Sébastien Ogier, Jari-Matti Latvala and our engi-neers, who made this success possi-ble. The performance of the two driv-ers was undoubtedly outstanding.
However, the one-two is also a team success. Whether the chassis depart-ment or the engine department, the Polo R WRC was perfectly prepared for the difficult conditions. The cham-pagne tastes particularly good today, as success in Mexico is always a bit special. It is the first gravel event of the year, and virtually a home event for Volkswagen. After all, our models are part of the scenery here. Everything came together here in Mexico, and we are very proud of what we have achieved.” And then there was ... ... Volkswagen Mexico. From the road-show in Mexico City to the guest ser-vices in León and out on the special stages, our Mexican colleagues en-sured everything was perfectly organ-ised. Thank you! Volkswagen Mexico also celebrated its 50th anniversary in León. And then there was also ... ... the chef in the Volkswagen team. Daniel Zillgen spent the past few days meticulously ensuring that only Ameri-can or Argentinean meat was served. In the case of Mexican meat, there is a risk that the drug Clenbuterol was used during breeding. This particular drug is also a banned doping substance.

03/2014 British Touring Car Championship Alain Menu takes fifth after catch-up race in the Volkswagen CC
Racing legend Alain Menu (CH) cele-brated a successful comeback to the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). In the third and last race dur-ing the season opener in Brands Hatch, the 50-year-old drove to a spec-tacular fifth place just 2.660 seconds behind the leader. From sixteenth on the grid Menu pulled off numerous spectacular overtaking manoeuvres to launch a remarkable catch-up race, which ripped the tens of thousands of spectators from their seats. The BTCC Champion from 1997 and 2000 se-cured the best result for his team, Chrome Edition Restart Racing. Team-mate Aron Smith came home in sev-enth place in both of the other two rac-es on Sunday. Although Menu did not complete as much tests as the compe-tition, the veteran demonstrated the speed his Volkswagen is capable of from the outset. “I had the best time of my carrier in the BTCC and it is great to be here again,” the former DTM driv-er commented.
Engen Volkswagen Cup South Africa Daniel Rowe also takes the overall standings in Killarney
Following his opening day victory, Daniel Rowe has also won the overall classification during the second racing weekend in the South African Engen Volkswagen Cup. The driver from Team Ferodo Racing crossed the fin-ishing line in second and third during the two races in Killarney. In the first race his Polo was only 0.214 seconds slower than Dewald Brummer in first place. In the second race Rowe fin-ished in third behind Tasmin Pepper and racing series rookie Sheldon van der Linde. The latter is also Rowe's fiercest rival in the overall standings. Rowe celebrated his first victory in the Engen Volkswagen Cup in the season opener in Zwartkops.
Formula Volkswagen South Africa Setback for defending champion Wolk – van Weely takes the lead
Defending champion Robert Wolk had to concede defeat in the second race weekend of Formula Volkswagen South Africa. After winning both races in the opening weekend in Zwartkops, the dominant force did not finish in the first race in Killarney. Nicholas van Weely was subsequently on top here for the first time this season. Wolk took revenge in the second race of the day securing a narrow victory with a 0.304-second advantage over van Weely. In the overall classification of the formula race series “powered by Volkswagen” everything comes down to a battle be-tween Nicholas van Weely (38) and Robert Wolk (34).
Volkswagen Fun Cup France Groupe Lemoine wins the season opener in France despite a collision
“Groupe Lemoine” were triumphant in the opening race of the Volkswagen Fun Cup France with their Beetle in the legendary Le Mans circuit. Philippe Lemoine, Benoit Dupassage and ex DTM pilot Alain Ferté won the eight-hour endurance race ahead of the Du-
pon Racing and Defi Baticonfort teams. The eventual winners got mixed up in a collision with two other cars in the first lap, but they staged a blistering comeback race following the safety car phase. Fifty technically-identical Beetles took to the starting grid in the popular racing series, which was blessed with dry and sunny weather.
Slot car Mini Polo R WRC celebrates its first victory in its third outing
The Polo R WRC in mini format has recorded its first win in its third appear-ance. Shortly before his big brother competes in the World Rally Champi-onship in Portugal (03–06 April), the Polo R WRC of Stefan Waschow (D) won the second event of the season in the Rally Racing Carrera Cup in Ham-burg. He defeated a strong field con-sisting of Porsche, Audi, Bentley and McLaren with the electric racing car on a scale of 1:24. Waschow was in a class of his own with the Volkswagen R WRC. The driver from the Volkswagen Motorsport–Das Kartell team secured pole position and then two comfortable victories in the races themselves.
