Hi...

An exciting year ahead! We now have a great team of committee members spreading the

load of work, we are all motivated and planning away with an almost full calendar of events for 2014.

The latest addition to the events is a York Camping trip and cruise in June. Be sure to keep your eye on

the events calendar on our website. Any questions can be asked by using our forum and please try to

post up if you are interested this helps us plan and often spurs more to join the fun.

On a personal note I have parted ways with my Split kombi – good news is “she” is staying within the

club. The new bus is on the forum. I have a build thread on the go in the Your Projects section along

with 2 other members split screen kombis.

We have added a Water-Cooled thread to the

forum too. Paul “pkuaso” is the moderator. He

has a wealth of Technical knowledge – when I

say wealth, what he knows is unbelievable!

See Paul’s post “Christmas Break 2013 Project

Passat”...

He has many contacts too so jump on and say hi

and show us your rides and what upgrades you

have done.

Have a great year, we hope to see you at an

event or 12.

“Members, this is a great family event and we are privileged to get the op-

portunity to have a "Volksville area" right in the thick of things.

“Been the last 4 years and we’d love

to have your company for this great club event” Jamie Barrett

NOTE: Those who want to camp in the "VOLKSVILLE" area as per previ-

ous years, please DO NOT buy your tickets online at Moshtix.

Instead PHONE THE FESTIVAL OF-

FICE on 92463311 between 10am and 5pm.

To save you time on the phone PLEASE IDENTIFY YOURSELF AS A VW CLUB MEMBER and Woody or Louise will organise everything for

you. This helps me with numbers so I can plan the area size for your enjoy-ment.

If you haven't been before or are un-able to stay over, the festival makes a great day trip.

We'd love to see you all to celebrate

our 22nd year.

Hi Folks,

The South West VW meets in

Busselton have been running eve-

ry month for over 18th months

and although they have been a

great success, the best turnouts

are in the warmer months when a

cruise or lunch has been organ-

ised.

Therefore with the idea to focus

on more cruises, lunches etc.,

during the warmer months, the

SW monthly meets will now

only run from January through

to June.

However, even with this change

keep an eye out here in ViaWest

or on the Club events page or fo-

rum for other ‘one-off’ VW events

in the South West.

Such an event has been the popu-

lar Vee Dubs@Busselton Drive-in

that has run for the last two

years. A major event will be on

again so put the first weekend in

November in your calendar… Fri-

day 31st Oct, Saturday 1st and

Sunday 2nd November 2014.

Meelup cruise

and BBQ The South West Monthly Gathering @ Busso held

on Sunday 12th January.

It was definitely hot in Busso

when 6 peeps turned up. Meelup

was busy so we had to park where

we could...some scored beach

front spots, a couple of others

drove direct to Meelup. Some had

a BBQ and others had a swim.

Anyway a couple of the pics for

you...

For South West vee-dubbers, a

cruise will be organised up to the

Old Coast Road Brewery.

If you want to join a CRUISE UP

FROM THE SW, please text or

email your name, meeting point,

vehicle (rego) and mobile num-

ber. Meeting points are Busselton

and Bunbury. Meeting times and

exact location to be provided to

those on the cruise up from the

From the Brewery, all will head

south to Busselton for an over-

night stay and to attend the VW

gathering on the Sunday.

To combine the both, a camp over

will be held in Busselton on the

Saturday Night…

Well vee dub folks CAMPING has

been organised at Four Seasons

Holiday Park Busselton 585 Caves

Rd, roughly half way between

Busselton and Dunsborough for

Saturday night.

All you need to do is ring 9755

4082, say "VW Club" and book

and pay for a reserved powered

camp sites or ask about cabins if

needed.

15 powered camp sites have been

reserved in a group and can be

booked for a discounted priced of

$27 for 2 adults.

They also have cabins for $125 or

ones for $99 where you need to

bring linen. No cabins have been

reserved so if you need one....ring

soon!

Woof...the park is dog friendly!

If you need more details check

out the Four Seasons web site.

The plan for SUNDAY and SW

MEET is to get together at

Centennial Park, foreshore car-

park at the end of Dun Bay Rd,

Dunsborough at 11am to catch

up with the Busso SW meet crew,

have a BBQ using the free beach

BBQs or buy some lunch from the

nearby shops and bakery. Then

join in a cruise east/north to have

a look at the Port Geographe Ma-

rina and beyond.

Vee-dubbers based north of

Busselton (e.g. Perth) can contin-

ue on their journey home. Kim

For a change, we thought we

would have a "White Christmas"

and so we travelled to the USA

and Europe over the break.

While in America, we managed to

hire a new Ford Escape 2.0 Eco-

boost, which I think is equivalent

to the Kuga in Asia-Pacific speak.

It turned out to be a competent

car with AWD and ABS that

worked well on the slippery roads

while experiencing the "ice-

storm" in Maine and New Hamp-

shire.

We tried to hire another AWD ve-

hicle for our time in Europe but

finally settled on a Golf 2.0TDI as

the SUVs were premium-priced

rentals that exceeded our budget.

So it was with some trepidation

that we picked up our black front

-wheel drive Golf VII at the

Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof for our

driving trip that took us through

Germany, Switzerland and a bit

of France over some slippery,

high altitude roads, but we need

not have worried.

The effective traction and braking

systems kept the Golf in control

even on the steep and narrow icy

alpine roads. We weren't pushing

hard, being novices at driving in

snow and ice, yet there were still

times when the safety systems on

the car intervened effectively but

unobtrusively on the slippery sur-

faces.

Driving on the German autobahns

was also a revelation for us -

even as we were travelling at 160

to 170 km/h (easily accomplished

with the reasonably punchy

2.0TDI engine), there were other

cars passing us as if we were sta-

tionary! Still, the in-built sat-nav

and heating systems (this was

the first time I could appreciate

heated seats!) worked well to

provide us with fuss-free, com-

fortable motoring. We wondered,

however, if the centre console

could have been narrowed down

a little to give more knee and foot

-well space.

Whilst based in Geneva, we drove

into Chamonix, France, in an at-

tempt to visit Mont Blanc but the

weather was so bad the cable car

sections that were to take us up

there were closed. Instead, we

took a punt on an alternative ca-

ble car to try to view the glacier

at Montenvers. It was pelting

down with snow but we were for-

tunate that the Montenvers funic-

ular train and cable car were op-

erational for a few hours that

day, just enough time for us to

literally get inside the glacier and

visit the museum.

However, when we got back to

the car, it was covered in inches

of snow and ice, which we re-

moved using the scraper provided

by the car hire company.

Snow on Golf - this was after we

cleared some of the white stuff

off! Chamonix, France

Particularly harrowing were the

drives up and down the Valaisien

Swiss Alps around the towns of

Sierre, Crans Montana, Leuk, Ver-

corin and Zermatt but somehow,

the Golf made the drives serene,

even pleasurable. The generally

feel-some steering and good

compromise between ride and

handling kept the driver in touch

with the road and therefore

awake and interested.

As we didn't get to see Mont

Blanc, we made extra effort at

Zermatt to get

close to the Mat-

terhorn (yes, the

mountain-logo on

the Toblerone

bars) and it was

well worth it. We

had to take no less

than 3 different

modes of transport

to get there! We

spent all day doing

this and even as

we were a little

weary, the drive

back to the hotel

at night was once

again seemingly made pleasant in

the Golf, especially when we were

still driving up icy roads with sin-

gle-lane hairpins and tunnels in

darkness. Those adaptive/

cornering headlamps would have

been handy and perhaps, brighter

reversing lamps - it was discon-

certing backing into a dark hair-

pin corner to allow another car to

get past!

The incredible scenery aside, the

highlight of the trip for me was

being able to see a couple of ex-

amples of our members' cars in

museums - Andrew Scogings's

1952 Beetle at the Porsche Muse-

um in Stuttgart and Robin Bai-

ley's DKW at the Sinsheim Tech-

nical Museum in Sinsheim, Ger-

many. The Porsche Museum as

expected was elegantly designed

and laid out, with the cars

and information chrono-

logically arranged in an

upward spiral. The Sins-

heim Technical Museum in

contrast, was a potpourri

of many things technical,

showcasing numerous

types of internal combus-

tion engines used in trans-

portation in an amongst

cars, mechanised organs

and squeeze boxes, huge

trains and even a Con-

corde jet.

It was a great trip, notably made

more enjoyable by the torquey,

reliable diesel VW Golf. Even if

the electric parking brake, auto

stop-start and sat-nav instruc-

tions took a bit of getting used to

for technological wood ducks like

us, we "bonded" with the car, al-

ways looking forward to a drive in

it no matter the time or weath-

er...and this says a lot about a

car.

Extract from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certificate_of_Entitlement The Certificate of Entitlement or COE is the quota license received from a successful winning bid in a open bid uni-form price auction which grants the legal right of the holder to register, own and use a vehicle in Singapore for a period of 10 years e.g to own a category B vehicle (1601cc and above) for 10 years costs approx SG$70,000 and the same again if you want to keep it another 10 years.

For more information please see reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certificate_of_Entitlement

These 2 pages are a copy of the VW brochure for the price list in Singapore (circa September 2013)

provided by Club Commit-tee Member Paul Kuah. Thanks Paul...

I have carried out some research to provide you with additional information that may help understand the brochure. The conversion rate at the time of this brochure was AUD1=SGD1.19. To calculate, divide the $ prices in this brochure by 1.19 to get Australian Dollars...e.g. SG$119,000 = A$100,000.

The CEVS evaluates carbon emissions and fuel efficiency to encourage consumers to shift to low emission models. All new cars registered with low carbon emissions will qualify for significant rebates between $5,000 and $20,000. Cars with high carbon emissions will incur a corresponding registration surcharge (penalty) of

Volkswagen’s seventh gener-

ation Golf has been named

2013 Wheels Car of the Year

at a gala event in Melbourne.

The multi-award-winning Golf

outclassed a field of 51 eligible

vehicles to collect what is widely

regarded as one of Australia’s

most prestigious automotive

awards.

To receive this honour, the all-

new Golf impressed Wheels’

highly respected panel of seven

expert judges throughout a rigor-

ous week of testing.

Wheels magazine editor, Glenn

Butler, lauded the Golf’s con-

sistency in all of the criteria; “The

Golf VII is satisfying to drive, se-

rene to ride in and superbly user-

friendly.

“Volkswagen seems almost to

have set out to create a car to

excel in every one of the five

Wheels Car of the Year criteria.

And, quite simply, the Golf has

aced it,” he said.

Veteran judge John Carey

summed up the Golf’s achieve-

ments; “The wonder-workers of

Wolfsburg have created a Golf

that’s better in every way that

can be measured. And the incre-

ments are anything but

miniscule.”

“From the smallest, thoughtful

details to the biggest basics, this

is a car that never falters. Its

breadth of talent, it’s almost an-

noyingly persistent perfectionism

and its unrelenting satisfaction

make it something truly rare… a

car for all reasons.

“This is one of the most worthy

Wheels Car of the Year winners

ever,” he wrote.

Receiving the award on behalf of

Volkswagen Group Australia,

Managing Director, John White,

commented on the win: “It is a

great pleasure and honour to re-

ceive this award on behalf of so

many in the Volkswagen family.”

“The Wheels Car of the Year

award caps-off a stellar year for

the all-new Golf; which has also

received Carsguide’s Car of the

Year Award locally; as well inter-

national acclaim as the 2013

World, European, Japanese, Scot-

tish and New Zealand Car of the

Year.”

Group Board Member for

Sales Christian Klingler:

"Renewed increase in deliver-

ies is very good achievement

by all brands. Market develop-

ments in 2014 expected to be

similar to 2013."

The Volkswagen Group reported

yet another strong increase in

worldwide deliveries for the full

year 2013, topping the record set

in 2012. "In total, our Group de-

livered over 9.7 million vehicles

to customers last year, ranging

from small city cars to heavy

trucks – more than ever before",

Group Board Member for Sales

Christian Klingler said, comment-

ing on the overall delivery figures

which also include estimates for

the MAN and Scania brands.

Klingler continued: "Across the

board, all brands contributed to

these very positive results which

are a very good achievement in

light of the difficult conditions on

markets all over the world. As far

as the current year is concerned,

we expect market developments

on a level similar to 2013. Even

though the situation in Europe

would appear to be stabilizing,

economic uncertainty will contin-

ue and the challenges we will be

facing on markets will remain vir-

tually unchanged."

Excluding the heavy truck brands

of MAN and Scania, the

Volkswagen Group delivered 9.5

(2012: 9.1; +4.8 per cent)* mil-

lion vehicles in 12 months. The

Group finished the month of De-

cember with a 6.3 per cent in-

crease, delivering 833,200

(December 2012: 784,100)*

units.

Developments in the various re-

gions and world markets were

mixed. Group brands delivered

3.65 (3.67; -0.5 per cent) million

vehicles on the overall European

market from January to Decem-

ber, of which 1.85 (1.85; +0.1

per cent) million units were

handed over in Western Europe

(excluding Germany). 1.16

(1.18; -1.4 per cent) million cus-

tomers chose a new model from

the Volkswagen Group in the

home market of Germany. Eu-

rope's largest automaker deliv-

ered 639,500 (644,300; -0.7 per

cent) vehicles in the Central and

Eastern Europe region. 303,200

(317,700; -4.6 per cent) vehicles

were handed over to customers

in the Russian market during the

same period.

Deliveries in the North America

region from January to December

grew 5.6 per cent to 888,800

(841,500) units, of which

611,700 (596,100; +2.6 per

cent) were delivered in the Unit-

ed States.

In the South America region, the

Volkswagen Group handed over

908,000 (1,010,100; -10.1 per

cent) million vehicles to custom-

ers during the same period, of

which 682,200 (780,200; -12.6

per cent) were delivered in Brazil.

The Group recorded very encour-

aging figures in the Asia-Pacific

region, where 3.64 (3.17; +14.7

per cent) million vehicles were

delivered to customers in the pe-

riod to December, of which 3.27

(2.81; +16.2 per cent) million

were handed over to customers

in China (incl. Hong Kong), the

Group's largest single market.

In contrast, deliveries in India

declined to 92,600 (114,100; -

18.9 per cent) units.

Outline of developments at

Group brands…

The Volkswagen Passenger Ve-

hicles brand delivered 5.93

(5.74; +3.4 per cent) million ve-

hicles to customers worldwide

during the full year. The brand

developed well in the Asia-Pacific

region, handing over 2.73 (2.37;

+15.0 per cent) million vehicles

there.

Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles

delivered 1.64 (1.70; -3.7 per

cent) million vehicles to custom-

ers on the overall European mar-

ket, where conditions remained

difficult, of which 560,100

(586,100; -4.4 per cent) units

were handed over in the home

market of Germany.

NAIAS

Detroit

2014: World

premiere of Beetle Dune

At the North American Interna-

tional Auto Show (NAIAS), start-

ing today in Detroit, Volkswagen

is giving a world premiere to the

Beetle Dune. The near-production

concept car thrills with its robust

off-road looks, raised body and

19-inch tyres. Volkswagen's ap-

pearance is rounded off with the

US premieres of the all-electric e-

Golf and the new 300-PS Golf R1.

Volkswagen's show highlight in

Detroit is the Beetle Dune. The

car at the show features

'Arizona', yellow/orange metallic

paintwork and flared wheel arch-

es offset in black. Unlike on the

familiar Volkswagen Cross mod-

els, so-called 'blades' (elements

1.5 millimetres thick) are fitted

on top of the matt main sections.

Chrome-plated underbody pro-

tection and side trim strips on top

of the sills, which are based on

the legendary running boards of

the original Beetle, underline the

both classy and sporty overall

impression. The interior - featur-

ing infotainment system and high

-definition 7.7-inch touchscreen -

conveys in addition a high level

of technological fascination. The

Beetle Dune is powered by a 210

PS turbo petrol engine, which

gives the concept car

acceleration of 0 to

100 km/h in 7.3 sec-

onds.

In parallel with

showcasing the Bee-

tle Dune,

Volkswagen is also

showing the new e-

Golf, making its US

premiere. The all-

electric e-Golf im-

presses with best-in-

class qualities from

the off, leading the way with low

power consumption of 12.7

kWh/100 km. By virtue of inno-

vative overall technology, en-

hanced aerodynamics (cW =

0.281) and optimised roll re-

sistance, the e-Golf is 10 per cent

more frugal than the best steel-

built competitor. The practically

silent e-Golf is also very inexpen-

sive to run - with power costs of

just €3.28 per 100 kilometres.

Volkswagen rounds off its best-

seller segment at the upper end

with the new Golf R: this top ver-

sion of the Golf is powered by a

redesigned 300 PS TSI engine

(221 kW)1, which is 30 PS more

powerful and yet up to 18 per

cent more fuel-efficient than its

predecessor. The reconfigured

sport suspension (lowered by 20

millimetres), the new progressive

steering and 'ESC Sport', which

can now be fully deactivated for

racetrack driving, ensure in addi-

tion purist handling.

“Monte” victory!

Dream start to the WRC for Ogier and

Volkswagen Volkswagen triumphs at opening round

of the WRC in Monte Carlo

Defending champions Ogier/Ingrassia claim second “Monte” win of their

careers

All three Polo R WRCs in the points at

the iconic rally

Triumph at the Rally Monte Carlo – Volkswagen opened the new season of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) with a dream result. Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) produced an irresistible fightback and an out-standing driving display to secure vic-tory on the first weekend of the 2014

season.

The success at the “Monte” is their 17th victory in the WRC, and their tenth with Volkswagen. The win was the duo’s second at the rally classic, having pre-viously won in 2009 when the event in the Mediterranean principality did not form part of the world championship. Second place went to Ford driver Bryan

Bouffier, who won here in 2011, with Citroën’s Kris Meeke taking third. The competitors at the notorious “Monte”, also known as “The Unpredictable One”, faced extremely difficult weather and road conditions. Rain in the valleys, snow at altitude – as has often been the case in the past, tyre selection was the decisive factor at the “Monte”. Volkswagen ended the classic with all three Polo R WRCs in the points. Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) and Andreas Mikkelsen/Mikko Markkula (N/FIN) picked up valuable points in fifth and seventh place respec-tively. Typical “Monte” – tricky tyre selection makes for excitement, weather for cha-

os

The sudden onset of winter in the French Maritime Alps and heavy rain in the val-leys – the start of the Rally Monte Carlo literally caught every-one cold. Based on the weather data available, the Volkswagen drivers opted for virtually tread-free slicks for the first three special stages of the “Monte”. With the shock arrival

of snow in the principality, this made driv-ing a real challenge. Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia and their team-mates lost a lot of time in these conditions. The World Champions found themselves back in ninth place. They showed their undoubted class from the fifth stage onwards, however, finishing consistently in the top-three from then on in and winning seven special stag-es. By the midway point of the “Monte” they had moved into the lead and never looked back.

Weather conditions were so extreme that the 14th special stage of the Rally Monte Carlo had to be cancelled. So much snow fell on the notorious Col de Turini between the first and second loop on Saturday that the second run had to be neutralised, with some World Rally Cars stuck in the snow. The comeback kid: Jari-Matti Latvala

and the double fightback

Sébastien Ogier’s team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila twice thrilled fans at the Rally Monte Carlo with a remarkable comeback. On the Friday of the rally, “JML” fought his way back from 18th to seventh place overall. He then climbed another position on Saturday, before a puncture saw him drop back down the field. However, he had battled back from eighth to fifth by the end of the day. Lat-

vala/Anttila were in the top-three on eight of the special stages at the “Monte”, clocking the fastest time on three occasions. Points reward for “Monte” trainee Mik-

kelsen

Lessons learned, points scored – Andreas Mikkelsen’s first outing in a World Rally Car at the Rally Monte Carlo was rewarded with six World Championship points. Together with co-driver Mikko Markkula, Mikkelsen showed the necessary caution on all 14 special stages. However, even that was not enough on the tenth stage: on slicks at the time, Mikkelsen/Markkula slid slowly off the snow-covered road in a slow corner be-tween Sisteron and Thoard. Despite losing a lot of time they were able to continue, with the help of the fans, and capitalised with a series of top times on the final day. Bonus points for Latvala/Anttila and

Ogier/Ingrassia on the Power Stage

Three extra points for Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila, and two bonus points for Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia – Volkswagen claimed a one-two on the Power Stage. Five of the six bonus points up for grabs on the Power Stage – the final stage of a rally, on which points are award-ed to the top three cars – went the way of the manufacturer from Wolfsburg. Dream start: Ogier/Ingrassia and Volkswagen lead the World Champion-

ship

Victory at the first rally of the year and two bonus points on the Power Stage mean the reigning World Champions lead the WRC after the opening act of 2014. Sébastien

Ogier and Julien In-grassia leave their home rally with 27 points to their name, while Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila are fourth with 13 points, courtesy of their Power Stage victory. Volkswagen also holds an early lead in the Manufacturers’ Cham-pionship: 37 points went to Wolfsburg, 33 to Citroën. Quotes, day three of the Rally Monte Carlo Sébastien Ogier, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #1 “What a perfect start to the season! The team did a fantastic job. I am overjoyed. It is an amazing feeling to win the Rally Mon-te Carlo in these difficult conditions – espe-cially now that the Monte is a round of the World Championship again. For that rea-son, this win obviously ranks above the victory in the IRC in 2009 for Julien and me. Even more so when you consider the last three days: the fightback in extreme rain, and then the snow chaos on the Col de Turini. I really wanted to win my home rally here. I will celebrate the win appropri-ately – with my family, my girlfriend and the entire Volkswagen team.” Jari-Matti Latvala, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #2 “I am really happy with fifth place. That was the goal we had set ourselves right from the word go. I have finally brought an end to my poor run at the Rally Monte Carlo. The conditions out on the route were very, very difficult in places – as was the tyre selection, which we did not get right at the start. The stages in the mountains were hard work, but it was worth it. We scored important points. I am particularly pleased with the extra points from the Power Stage. We now head to the Rally Sweden full of

confidence.” Andreas Mikkel-sen, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #9 “An incredibly strenuous rally for us. There were so many conditions we had never come across before. Like many oth-ers, we found ourselves driving with slicks on snow and spikes

in the rain. The tyre selection was definitely extremely difficult. However, I learned a lot at the Rally Monte Carlo. I am very happy that we finished in the points. That was always our goal, and I am still flabbergast-ed how difficult it was to achieve that goal.” Jost Capito, Volkswagen Motorsport Director “I am very proud of the entire team today. The drivers, co-drivers, engineers and me-chanics all did an outstanding job. Sébas-tien Ogier’s performance was worthy of a champion, while Jari-Matti Latvala and An-dreas Mikkelsen also did a magnificent job. Together with their engineers, and using the information available from the ice spies and weather crews, they always made in-telligent tyre selections – even if they did not always turn out to be perfect. But that is just typical of the ‘Monte’, which is always unpredictable and temperamental. To have all three Polo R WRCs in the points and to have won the iconic ‘Monte’ for the first time as a team is an outstanding success.” And then there was ... ... Nicolas Vouilloz, the ice spy for Sébas-tien Ogier, who is known as the “inventor of tyre crossing”. In unclear and fluctuating weather conditions, rally drivers are in-creasingly opting for a mixed tyre set-up in a cross configuration. For example, slick and wet tyres are used at the same time, with slicks fitted on the front left and rear right, and wets in reverse. “We tried this out years ago at tyre tests with Michelin, and it worked better than having different tyres on the front axle to the rear axle. We were probably the first to use it in competition,” said the 37-year-old from Nice, who has proven to be more than adept at overcom-ing the extreme on two wheels too: Vouilloz was crowned World Downhill Mountain Bike Champion on ten occasions.
