Totara Health Services bring cutting edge health care to West Aucklandour

New Lynn is to get a large, multi-function medical centre that could show the way to the future of health care in New Zealand, when Totara Health Services opens soon.

Totara Health Services has been designed by local doctors as a network around which all local GPs, consultants and other services and medical facilities, are grouped together to provide the capacity to diagnose, treat and/or manage a wide range of conditions. The aim is provide the best possible range of health services “close to home” for West Aucklanders. This is to provide a convenient service to the public and also to prevent cases unnecessarily getting serious and often, ending up as a preventable strain on hospitals.

The centre will be the anchor tenant occupying two and a half floors of the new commercial/parking complex being developed by Infratil, on the old New Lynn bus station. This “Merchant Quarter” will be opened on 8 March and the medical centre is expected to open in early April 2013.

The centre is the initiative of doctors from four different practices - the New Lynn Medical Centre, the Golf Road Medical Centre and Titirangi Family Health Care and Kinross Medical Centre - in response to the current lack of an integrated medical service serving this sector of West Auckland.

The Totara Medical Centre has been developed in consultation with the Waitemata District Health Board and with the support from the Ministry of Health, to create a convenient, multi-functional 'one stop shop' approach, to treat as many conditions as possible close to home and relieve the burden on the city's hospitals. With Ministry of Health funding available, some services will be free and others will be affordable.

This integrated facility will be a demonstration centre to New Zealand and indeed the doctors, supported by Whau Community Board chairman Derek Battersby, have modelled Totara Health services on similar services in Brisbane. It is regarded as cutting edge and a new standard that will be copied in other parts of the city and the country.

Because consultants, GPs and other medical professionals will be co-located and often working together, not only will front line medical services be easier and quicker for the public to access, but so will escalation of a case when necessary. With x-ray and other diagnostic facilities on site, doctors will be able to readily confirm their diagnoses, or explore new options.

Other services will include physiotherapy, dental, orthodontic and audiology clinics. There will be midwives on site, Auckland Heart Group and Auckland Eye are creating specialist satellite facilities in the centre and the Waitemata DHB will develop some hospital services.

With access to consultants and other specialised services, moving a patient to specialist care can be seamless. Furthermore, having the professionals working in close proximity allows them to maintain or increase their skills by working closely and; it also allows Totara Health Services to fulfil both teaching and research roles.

Specialised paediatric, diabetes, aged care and mental health services are under development. People will always be having babies and there will always be a percentage of people with mental health issues. Meanwhile, diabetes and age related conditions are an increasing part of the medical landscape and commanding an increasingly large share of available resources, both financial and human.

By having these specialist services, there is emphasis on preventing problems from developing, or at least managing them at the lowest possible level. This, the doctors say, is both the financially sensible and the humane approach to health care. It offers better care to the patient and makes the delivery of health-care cost efficient thus releasing funding to other areas of need.

The emphasis on prevention and management gives special meaning to the old saying of putting a rail at the top of the cliff instead of an ambulance at the bottom.

Dr Philip Rushmer, a spokesman for Drs Vicky MacDonald, Craig King, Peter Woolford, Maelen Tagalagi and Gary Collinson - the doctors leading the project - praised the DHB and the Ministry of Health who have been very supportive and have given them a lot of help.

They also praised the support the centre had received from the Council and from the building developers, Infratil.

The retail transformation - what do West Auckland women want?Traditionally, retail liquor stores have been more appealing to men than woman - but no more in West Auckland. Making our retail stores feel comfortable and welcoming to female customers was one of the major objectives when we designed the layout, look, feel and decor of the West Liquor and Village Wines and Spirits stores. The feedback received says that women love the new stores.

This didn’t happen by accident. Retail Operations Manager, Mark Clayton says The Trusts did a lot of research among the West Auckland community to discover the answer to a couple of key questions: “What will make women feel as if they are valued and welcomed by us and what will make them feel safe and comfortable shopping with us?”

“We heard loud and clear that they want to shop in places that are modern, visually attractive, smart and welcoming, the sort of places where we all feel comfortable. Equally as important, women wanted to feel safe and be safe.”

It was made obvious in their feedback that our traditional stores simply weren’t “doing it” for our women customers, and a lot of men as well. Accordingly, the new stores are a huge departure. They are of the 21st century: modern, smart, fashionable, sophisticated and safe.

A lot of detailed planning went into achieving this outcome. Lighting was important, the new stores have scientifically designed lighting that makes them bright and brings out the new decor. The aisles are wide and uncluttered, with plenty of room for people to pass without brushing up against one another. The free-standing shelves (gondolas) on the floors are low so that customers can see and be seen over them. This enhances the bright, open, airy effect and also means customers never feel alone and isolated. Easy listening music plays throughout the stores including the chillers.

The exterior is presented to the world in the smart new West Auckland colours; there are big picture windows which mean you can almost do your shopping from the street. Likewise, the chillers have huge windows and are brightly lit.

CEO Simon Wickham says that The Trusts are very aware that the traditional stores were designed for a different era and did not reflect the modern market. “What women want is vitally important to the modern business and they rightfully have high expectations. Our customers, irrespective of gender, share those expectations these days. In modern retailing you ignore your customers’ wishes at your peril.”

Mark Clayton says it was very important for The Trusts to research locally and not simply import ideas from other parts of Auckland, much less from overseas.

"West Auckland is a very distinct and proud market, the public of the West wanted a new look that reflected West Auckland and stores that uniquely reflected our region and pride in the West," he says.

Results show that customers are responding and appreciate the changes. Sales are up, customers are spending more time in the stores, the craft beer initiatives are being well received, more women are using the stores and when asked, have given the new operations a very definite thumbs-up.

duty manager, and within a short period of time was promoted to run his own store. That vacancy came about because the previous manager had been promoted to run a larger store. Rorani Arakua also started out as a sales assistant in Avondale and now runs his own store in New Lynn.

“Emily Forbes is another good example of how far you can take your career. Emily started as a bar person, moved up to duty manager and now manages Bar 159.

The Trusts even has a “Talent Co-ordinator”. It’s a very large and diverse operation extending across retail, bars, restaurants, a hotel, logistics and supply and management, each with its own skills and demands. Talent Co-ordinator Roseanne Taylor co-ordinates all applications that come through the career website, she assesses which part of the operation each applicant might be best suited to, or which part leads more directly to the career they see for themselves.

Roseanne has also formed a close relationship with industry training providers and government agencies such as WINZ, to ensure that we are working closely with the community to help find people great jobs.

“We literally talent spot,” says Martha. “You may come in for one job and be asked to consider something else or; if we can’t offer you anything right now, we ask to keep your name on file for when an opening comes up that’s the right fit ,” Martha says.

“Hiring today for tomorrow’s job creates careers for the people of Auckland; and it takes us further on our journey to being the best in our business and the pride of the West.”

Great people = great serviceOur world-class customer service continues to prove itself, with 13 staff members in 10 different retail stores earning 100% marks from mystery shoppers, in the three months September through November 2012. In addition, staff at Black Salt Bar got a 96% approval rating, and those at The Hangar 90%.

We’re delighted by these results because they’re good in themselves and because the number of 100% marks is going up all the time. This shows our customer service training course is working.

This course was specifically designed for The Trusts by the world renowned Dale Carnegie Business Group, to train our staff to give a world class level of customer service. Having trained our people, we regularly put them to the test by sending in a mystery shopper who will grade them on different aspects of the service they give. And it’s not easy to achieve in the 90% - 100% range. There’s no point in aiming to be world-class and not trying hard enough – so the mystery shoppers test attitude, efficiency and product knowledge to their limits.

If you apply for a job with The Trusts these days, there’s a very good chance you’ll end up with a career instead. The Trusts are now creating career paths within the organisation that can theoretically lead from entry level to senior manager, perhaps one day, to CEO.

“Our motto is ‘Hire today for tomorrow’s job’,” says HR Manager Martha Gibbons. “Under our system, someone applying for a kitchen hand’s job in a restaurant can realistically hope to become one of our chefs in the future. Someone applying to be a sales assistant in a retail store can realistically expect to become the manager of our biggest retail operation, in time.

“They can expect to be offered relevant training and it is our preference to try and promote within the organisation.”

The creation of training systems and career paths began several years ago, but the results have begun to accelerate over the last two years, with a dramatic plummet in staff turnover as result.

“Our staff turnover last year was 26.1%; compared with 58.8% in 2008. That’s a massive drop and is rare in the retail and hospitality industry,” says Martha who keeps track of national statistics.

Now she is calling together her “Agents of Change”, staff members who are helping to create the systems and culture of the future. Their task, this time, is to introduce The Trusts Management Training Programme.

The purpose of the programme is to identify rising stars in the organisation who have the potential to be the next leaders. The programme will cover everything from how to do the banking right through to how to positively influence a team and motivate others. It is envisaged the programme will last 12 months and at the successful completion of it, those stars will be ready to take on a management role once it becomes available.

“Our aim is to be seen as an industry leader in training and development and to ensure everyone in the organisation has access to training.” she says.

“We have already had some great success stories of stars being identified and promoted. Stephen Knott started with us as a sales assistant in a retail store. He was offered the opportunity to become a

It begs the question of how much more silverware can fit into one man’s “lifetime achievement cabinet” when his contributions began nearly 60 years ago and have encompassed such a wide range of endeavour – and he is still only 72, and is as full of creative vigour as ever. There are some who say the range of areas in which he has become a leader, an achiever and a game changer, make him one of our greatest New Zealanders.

He has been a leader in local and national politics, environmentalism, peace, film, music, the arts, advertising, business, surf-lifesaving and the Maori renaissance. He has his own place in history as a prolific author and historian, a film and documentary maker, and a creator of ideas.

A lifelong servant of surf lifesaving (and its first knight in over a century) and a founder of the world’s first rescue helicopter service, he has been honoured with Life Membership of the New Zealand Lifesaving Association and also of the Auckland Lifesaving Association.

An advertising pioneer, Sir Bob was one of the outstanding young creative talents who revolutionised both the industry and political advertising in the 1960s and 70’s. At age 21 he and several others founded McHarman Advertising which became one of New Zealand’s biggest Ad agencies, handling prestigious accounts and winning numerous awards for creativity, including this country’s first ever award at Cannes, with a TV commercial (directed by Roger Donaldson). Sir Bob was an inaugural inductee into the New Zealand Advertising Hall of Fame and McHarman’s became McHarman Ayer after America’s, NW Ayer Advertising bought the company).

He has been a lifelong environmentalist. Among other activities, he chaired the Auckland Regional Council’s Park and Wilderness Trust that saved the historically significant Hamlin’s Hill and as Mayor, was a prime mover in Waitakere City successfully seeking the permanent protection of the Waitakere Ranges.

The announcement at New Year of his elevation came hard on the heels of the announcement that Waterfront Auckland, of which he is now chair, had been voted the 'World's Best Waterfront' by the World Waterfront Conference in Washington DC. This award followed on from the Wynyard Quarter winning the NZ Institute of Architecture's Urban Design Framework Award for 2012.

He is a Life Member of the New Zealand Labour Party, having served as a strategist and advertising expert for more than 50 years. He played a leading role in the successful campaigns of the three Labour Prime Ministers elected in this era: Norman Kirk, David Lange and Helen Clark and was Party President for two years. Along the way he was a strategist for former PM, the Rt Hon Mike Moore, and legendary Auckland Mayors “Robbie” (Sir Dove-Meyer Robinson), Her Excellency Dame Cath Tizard (later Governor General) and Colin Kay. He was also a strategist who helped Tim Shadbolt be elected Mayor of Waitemata City.

He was deputy chairman of the New Zealand Film Commission and remains a leading light in the world of film, heading-up trade delegations of New Zealand film makers overseas and notably in China. It was his vision and audaciousness that purchased the coolstores in Henderson Valley Road that grew into New Zealand’s largest film studios and home to productions such as Xena, Warrior Princess, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and The Bridge to Terebithia.

He was chairman of the Health Sponsorship Council and is a past member of the Aotea Centre Board of Governance, and a former Board Member of the Tourist Hotel Corporation and of Te Papa.

In 1984 he helped put together the bid that won the 1990 Commonwealth Games for Auckland, and then headed up the 1990 Commonwealth Games Festival, that dramatic event which realised Princess Te Puia’s 1948 dream of a fleet of great waka gathered on the Waitemata Harbour.

Auckland’s Starship owes its name, and to some extent its international reputation, to Bob Harvey. In 1991 the management of the yet-to-be-named children’s hospital were in search of large amounts of sponsorship money, in order to make it a centre of excellence. They needed much more than could be raised in Auckland in those days and it was hard to see the rest of the

West Auckland/Waitakere has produced an extraordinary number of extraordinary New Zealanders - men, women, families and companies - who have been unique, outstanding and yes, that much overused word, 'iconic'. We will profile one of them each month.

country contributing to an Auckland hospital. What was needed was a name that made all of New Zealand recognise this as the hospital for sick kids in |New Zealand.

Asked to create such a name and image, Sir Bob went and stood in the atrium and studied the reactions of children as they entered that wonderful confection of a building; they stood staring upwards in awe, their eyes wide and their mouths open. It reminded Sir Bob of the final scenes in Spielberg‘s, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, where the cast gathered, awestruck, under the descending Starship.

“This place” he declared several days later, “is the Starship”. It was a stroke of sheer genius that transformed a building in Auckland into an icon for not just New Zealand but the entire Pacific.

And then he became Mayor of Waitakere City, the country’s first eco-city, that, in the 18 years of his Mayoralty, brought international recognition; invented “The Waitakere Way” of achieving a very great deal on shoestring budgets and which had Governments sending other cities to Waitakere “to see how it’s done”. It took such pressing issues as public transport, waste management, sustainable water-management, compact city building and local employment, from the “caftan-wearing fringes” to the political mainstream.

Waitakere City, under his leadership, was both inspirational and transformational. It pointed the way to the future and it did so making full use of the old adage that “necessity is the mother of invention.”

The smallest and the least well resourced of Auckland’s four cities, Waitakere found ingenious ways to show the way in city building, on a very wide front, with very slender resources. It provided libraries, did a mutual aid “Town and Gown” deal with Unitec, initiated and strategically funded, The Trusts Arena (formerly The Trusts Stadium) which is phenomenally well used by the community, and it fostered the arts. It drove the double tracking of the Western rail line and the “undergrounding” of the railway at New Lynn, New Zealand’s largest rail project in many decades and one which is seeing the beginnings of very large

commercial investment there. It revitalised town centres and gave them pride. It created The People’s Park at Te Atatu. It kept the proposed new town centre at Westgate, offering up to 10,000 jobs, on the agenda and pushed for the current development of the old Hobsonville Airbase. It fostered the internationally award-winning Project Twin Streams and with Waitakere Central showed the way for sustainable architecture of the future, and of course, bought and initiated the development of both an international film industry and a world class studios.

And that is only a brief summary of some of its landmark achievements, inspired, championed, and “cheer-led” by this extraordinary servant of the public.

Sir Bob is fond of saying that his councils stood on the shoulders of giants but in truth he is a giant himself. He is a tireless worker who, in 18 years, rarely took an hour off, let alone a day, and handled a work and stress load that would have destroyed others. He had his controversies and his detractors and enemies but to virtually everyone else, no matter what their status in life, he offered unflagging kindness, warmth, support, ideas, wisdom and at times, comfort - spiced often, with an irrepressible sense of fun. The West loved him. They must have; they re-elected their “Bob” six times,

Mannequin MadnessLopdell House Gallery is planning to use artists to create 'Mannequin Mania' in conjunction with the opening of the new Merchant Quarter in New Lynn, in early March. At the same time they were hoping (at the time of writing) to revive a fashion contest from the 1960's that featured newspaper dresses.

The Gallery has taken its inspiration, in part, from the relocation of Purfex Mannequins - a unique West Auckland business that has been making shop mannequins for more than 70 years. The changes at Purfex saw a large number of mannequins sold and, the Gallery acquired 17 for use in the proposed art event.

Ten of the mannequins will be given to different artists who will exercise their “body painting” skills on them. These will be on display in shop windows throughout New Lynn. Another seven will be dressed to represent the fashion in each of the seven decades Purfex has produced mannequins in West Auckland.

The Gallery also hopes to resurrect a 1969 fashion show held at LynnMall, in which contestants designed, made and modelled their own newspaper dress.

Other activities will include a “sewing cafe” in Todd Triangle in which people are invited to try their hand at sewing; a body art demonstration by the talented Celeste Strewe and Klaus Meiswinkel, the in-house makeup and wig designer for Purfex will be onsite showing off his skills with a cosmetics brush.

Proved yet again - We don't serve minorsSixteen of our premises (13 liquor stores and 3 bars) were put to the test recently, to see if we would serve alcohol to minors - and we passed with flying colours. Not one of the 16 premises was fooled by the youngsters who tried to buy alcohol and they all left empty handed.

Called Controlled Purchase Operations (or CPOs), these tests are regularly and randomly carried out by the Police and the District Licensing Authority (Auckland Council). Youngsters, who look as if they could be under age, are sent into stores to buy alcohol illegally, and if they succeed, the outlet is punished.

Because we’re the major retailer of liquor in West Auckland and the local police are diligent, we get put to the test quite often, perhaps more often than retailers in other parts of the city and we’re pleased to report that over 2012, we never failed the test. What’s more, we’re happy for the Police and DLA to test us as often as they want to because we never want to sell to underage people out West. The better we work together with Police and the DLA, the better our young people are protected.

This is a form of “Giving Back” in action. The public owns The Trusts and we know you want to see our young people protected. Accordingly we have introduced a very rigorous system for detecting minors trying to buy alcohol. We’re very proud to say it is working.

Similarly, we don't put our youth at risk by selling party pills or any other form of 'legal high'.

“Giving back” by putting social responsibility before profits, is another benefit to you, the public, owning The Trusts and getting the responsible liquor service you demand and deserve.

High intensity interval training (HIIT) is a growing trend in the fitness industry. Arena Fitness has taken it to the next level with the launch of their new 6-week Team Training program - TEAM HIIT.

“The program launched late in 2012 and completely exceeded our expectations. From the enthusiasm and dedication of the participants to the results they experienced, we are really proud of what is the first of many exciting new services on offer at Arena Fitness.” says Arena Fitness Manager, Shara Curlett.

TEAM HIIT is based around a modification of the popular Tabata protocol - 20 seconds of short, intense anaerobic exercise alternating with 10 seconds of rest, for a total of 4 minutes. Each TEAM HIIT session includes 7 Tabata sets with a 1 minute rest period between each, with the intensity and difficulty increasing from week to week.

The program focuses strongly around form and function, with an information session that covers safety, education and correct exercise technique. Over the 6-week period Team Training Coach Bobby Teina progresses the teams, with each individual working to their own level as they are introduced to new exercises and new training tools. This allows for a variety of fitness levels to participate in the program, and in a safe manner.

“It was awesome. It really pushed me to challenge myself, and it was an awesome team environment. I’m definitely doing it again.” TEAM HIIT member Katherine Patmore said.

And TEAM HIIT is just the first of a wide variety of new services on offer at Arena Fitness.

“There is a lot happening at the moment and it’s really exciting. We’ve recently re-developed our bathrooms, rebranded the gym and we are currently developing some exciting new services. Our aim is to maximise our strengths and take our gym beyond the status quo by introducing a menu of training options both inside and outside.”

“Not many other gyms have an Arena, large fields and grandstands just outside the front door, so we are literally home to an adult’s fitness playground and the potential is very exciting for us,” says Shara.
