A Victorian Government initiative Issue 2: December 2009 Vicmap Topographic - eNewsletter INTRODUCTION Welcome to the December issue of the Vicmap Topographic Mapping Newsletter! The aim of this quarterly newsletter is to provide users with the latest news on Victorian topographic mapping products. Topographic mapping is a vital resource for the State of Victoria, as it is used by the general public, State, local and Australian governments, the private sector and academia. Its uses are broad, including recreation, route planning, emergency response and recovery, navigation, risk management, site analysis, education, flora and fauna surveys, infrastructure planning, asset management. The objective of the Vicmap topographic mapping program is to provide current topographic mapping for the general public, WOVG, emergency services organisations and the private industry, in a number of different scales and map sizes, and in both digital and hardcopy formats. The mapping products, available since 2004, are created using an automated mapping system that dynamically produces topographic mapping from Vicmap, Victoria’s digital spatial framework datasets. Because the program products suite is created from the one mapping system, a state wide consistency of content and currency is now available for all users. Spatial Information Infrastructure (SII) of the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) is responsible for the production and maintenance of Vicmap Topographic Mapping. WHAT’S NEW Vicmap Hardcopy Replacement Program - Launch of completion of program. In August 2009 the Vicmap Topographic Hardcopy Mapping Replacement Program was completed. This means that for the first time Victoria is now covered state wide by large scale topographic mapping. These 234 map sheets are at a scale of 1:50 000 and were created between 2006 and 2009. During this period several 1:25 000 map sheets and Specials - map with non standard extents – were also created. Recognising the importance of this achievement, the Victorian Spatial Council launched the completion of this mapping program in October. Now that the program is completed, a maintenance program has been implemented. The aim of this program is that each map sheet is updated every three to five years. Also we will be producing some 1:25 000 map sheets over selected areas as well as more Specials over areas of interest. The new Vicmap Index showing all published topographic map sheets, including the preceding Vicmap Published Series, will be available in late December.
