Puppet Shows

When I was 3 years old, I saw my first puppet show. I

was immediately entranced by the medium. When television

came in a few years later, puppet shows were a dime a dozen.

I watched them all. The coffee house at the Cove was a trip

back in time for me because I wasn’t content just to watch

puppet shows; I had to do puppet shows and I continued wear-

ing out puppets until I was 12. I was absolutely delighted with

the inventiveness of our own puppet crew. The story line was

original, inventive and witty. I hope we will see them again.

I’m glad to see this resurgence of interest in this medium

which so entranced me as a child, and I’m glad I have not out-

grown. I hope they will do it again.

Nami Convention in Sturbridge, MA I had a very good time at the conference with family and friends. Marie and I went to all the seminars that were held there. We saw Jeff Z. displaying his art. The quilt seminar was my favorite. It was probably In-dian blankets. One person gave me a free toothbrush. Raffle tickets were there as well. You had to write your name and # down. They also had a conference for little people. It was so cute to see them walking around and having fun. The food was okay. My parents and I went to the VIP lounge for dinner. VIP stands for: very important person. It was awesome going home with some more knowledge.

January’s Employment Dinner

For January’s employment dinner we had a pork roast with

squash veggies and desert. I am psyched to say I have the

opportunity to start a job at Shaw’s. I would be pushing carts

getting some good exercise in the cold winter air. I am a lit-

tle bit reluctant to take the position because I will be moving

soon and don’t want to leave them after so short of a period

of time. What facilitated the opportunity for the job was a

change in medication privileges so I can package an evening

dose and take it with me. I hope this works out because I

could use the extra cash

Community Dinner Friday April 28th

at the Cove Clubhouse Serving Lasagna. Friends, family, and community members invited.

With a little imagination

It can take you anywhere,

if you try

It can make you open doors.

It can open doors

or close them.

Sometimes, it makes you know

who you know

or what you know.

Harwich Christmas Stroll 2016

We had a great time at the Harwich stroll. Jeff and Penny manned

our table while we took turns strolling the Village of Harwich. The la-

dies of the Pilgrim church had their crowd pleasing cookie table, $5

for a small box of home made cookies $10 for a large. Jeff treated

us to a box. They also had hot dogs and American chop suey if you

were hungry. Sara and I went to TD Bank they had a full orchestra

and Christmas Carolers. We made a total of $250, after we paid our

artist we made a total of $150.00

Holiday Party 2016 was a HIT!

Cove Clubhouse was hopping on Friday, as we all came together for food and

fun. We had more Chinese food than anyone could dream to eat, a present for

everyone, and fun gift card drawings throughout the day. There was laughter in

the air and lots of hugs. They say that friends are the family you choose… and

what a wonderful celebration of friendship we had!

A big thank you to the Pilgrim church for their generous donation of Dollar Tree

gift cards along with Izzy and the Pilgrim ladies who blessed us with gifts. We

also had some community members who remembered us at Christmas. Jackie

and her family blessed us with Dunkin Donuts gift cards. Also thank you to Mary

another woman from the community who treated us to a lunch of deli sand-

wiches and cake.

NAMI Mental Health Legislation for 2017 The new legislative year has started in Massachusetts and several bills have been proposed that NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is asking for people to support on the follow-ing issues: Police Training- House Bill 3570 & Senate Bill 2320- An act

relative to enhancing municipal police training. Summary- Po-lice officers are key first responders. With the right mental health training, police can de-escalate situations, prevent un-necessary arrests, reduce injuries and connect people to ap-propriate treatment. Only 17% of police departments in MA have access to mental health training. This bill expand training and make it available to all police depts. in the state.

Expanded Coverage for Emergency Psychiatric Services- Senate Bill 774 & House Bill 1979- An act requiring insurance cov-erage for emergency psychiatric services. Summary- Presently only adults and children on MassHealth are covered when treated by emergency psychiatric providers. Most people with private health insurance are not. These bills will change that.

Bridgewater State Hospital- Senate Bill 512 & House Bill 2341 An act to transfer Bridgewater State Hospital from the Depart-ment of Corrections to the Department of Mental Health. Sum-mary- DMH could ensure proper care for people who are sick and vulnerable. No civilized society should remand citi-zens to jail of their mental illness. DMH can ensure that people are treated like patients, not prisoners, and that a healthy environment exists that promotes recovery.

If you support or oppose any of these proposals– call your legislators and let them know!! You can find your Senators/Representatives contact info at www.mass.gov. Your voice matters!!

DRA: Accepting Differences

We have been having a DRA recovery meeting at the clubhouse.

DRA is for people who struggle with some kind of addiction. It could be

drugs or alcohol, food, gambling, shopping… anything that is getting in the

way of your recovery. There are different way to approach DRA meetings.

You can have a discussion meeting where you pick a topic and then every-

one shares on the topic. There are speaker meetings, where people share a

little about their history and where they are today. There is also step meet-

ings where we discuss and implement the 12 steps into our lives.

We meet every Monday at twelve noon in the room downstairs off the art

room. We are planning on attending some of the other support groups in the

community. On Mondays the peer support Group has a ten o'clock meeting

called on the road to recovery, followed by another meeting at 11AM called

relapse prevention. On Friday Baybridge has a DRA meeting which is held

on Friday afternoon during lunch, we are going to visit them one of these

Fridays.

Last of all my friend Susie hosts a DRA meeting in Dennisport New Life

Church at 6PM. Maybe we could attend that meeting for an evening activity.

Please see Mary or Penny if you are interested.

DRA is not just a place to get help but a place to give help.

KICKING BUTTS MEETING OFF TO A GREAT START!!!

So far we have four people abstinent in our kicking butts program!!!!

We try to stress doing the foot work and giving credit for the things that

we are doing to abstain rather then the things that we should be doing.

The group meets Thursday afternoons

1:15.
