Illinois Tech Bridge Contest for High School Students

The American Nuclear Society develops and disseminates nuclear science and technology information. Its members work in such diverse areas as education, research and development laboratories, government, power plant operations, medical and isotope applications, and engineering design and services. The ANS display has hands-on demonstrations for radiation detection, a model fuel bundle for a nuclear reactor, a work sheet to calculate your daily exposure to radiation, information about careers, and much more. Experience a hands-on demonstration of a modern fire detection and alarm system. See how a manual fire alarm, smoke detector and fire alarms consisting of horns and strobes operate in the event of a fire. SFPE is an organization that promotes fire safety. Engineering Tricks Behind the World’s Skyscrapers ....................................................... Room 114

Using such engineering marvels as the Trump Tower Chicago and the world’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa, the engineering principles of structures will be discovered. An engineer’s tools of the trade such as the amaz-ing strength of shapes, structural materials, wind engineering and sustainability will be uncovered in this interactive and educational program. A hands-on shake table will allow select students to construct their own LEGO Skyscraper and test it to destruction under a simulated earthquake. Geotechnical Engineering is the study of engineering properties of soil and rock. It involves geology, physics, mechanics, chemistry and history/experience. The goal of the Chicago Geo-Institute Chapter today is to pro-vide an understanding of the interaction of soil and rock and structures, including buildings, tunnels, pipe-lines, roads and bridges. The Geo-Institute (G-I) is a specialty membership organization focused on geo-professionals and the geo-industry. It is one of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ eight specialty Insti-tutes. IL CHIP Child Identification Program .............................................................................. Room 218

No parent ever wants to live through the nightmare of having a child missing. Parents can be prepared for the unthinkable with an identification packet put together by IL CHIP. The Freemasons of Illinois provide FREE of charge to parents a complete child identification package that can be taken home or carried with the family on vacation. The information, most of which is contained on a flash drive, is compact and totally private. The only item IL CHIP keeps is the parental permission form.

Parents will receive: Color photo that records image and height and is digitized on a convenient flash drive that can easily be

circulated by police to the media and distributed across the state within an hour via Illinois’ Amber Alert program.

DNA Sample taken through a saliva cheek swab is the latest tool in the scientific arsenal to make positive IDs of lost children.

Fingerprints are the oldest form of positive identification since they are unique to every person. Recorded video interview captures appearance, speech patterns, personal characteristics,

and mannerisms.

Join Jerry Zimmerman, Mr. Freeze of Fermilab, as he demonstrates the interesting and fun properties of cryogenics using Liquid Nitrogen (LN2). This exciting, science-based demonstration is filled with lots of surprises and a few explosions! The different properties and effects of the extreme cold are demonstrated and explained.
