DRAFT CARER SUPPORT SERVICE SYSTEM

LATEST MH SECTOR NEWS

REGIONAL ARAFMI NEWS

Hello carers, volunteers, students and staff,

7 November - 11 November 2016 / Issue 143

This week MHCN has been very busy , from our Carer Peak Advisory Committee meeting on Monday to the Family and Carer Mental Health Program that we convened today. The C-PAC meeting was very informative and has helped us to start to formulate our list of priorities for advocacy positions, as well as helping to advise on initial responses to the 5th National Mental Health Plan and the Integrated Plan for Carer Support Services, both released by the Commonwealth for public comment recently. The meeting also recommended that we invite Jae Radican to the Family and Carer Mental Health Program meeting to talk about the scope for the development of peer carer roles in NSW.

We spent some time preparing (David Peters who attended the Annual General Meeting of our national peak body, Mental Health Carers Australia, which com-menced with the 40th anniversary dinner for Helping Minds, (the WA Arafmi, which has now changed it’s name), before the AGM on Thursday and the planning day. Patrick Hardwick was elected to be the new President of MHCA, tasking over from our own Kristine Havron, former MHCN president and MHCA Board representative for NSW. (Patrick is President of Helping Minds).

We also prepared for our own AGM on the 24th of November and circulated the notice and call for nominations for President, Treasurer and 3 x (extra) Ordi-nary Committee Members. Our audit, Annual Report and supplementary Carer issues Report are nearing completion and will be very informative.

On Wednesday we help the first FASD training for NSW with No-FASD and look forward to further collaborations with them in future. But the major event of the week was convening the Family and Carer Mental Health Program meeting today. After an informative presentation from Lam Huynh (MHB Project Officer) , we had very interesting discussions around the current form of the program and heard from Ab-sec about how to make it more accessible for Indigenous people.

Have a great weekend!

COMMUNITY-LED SOLUTIONS FOR IDIGENOUS SUICIDE PREVENTION The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Suicide Prevention Evaluation Project (ATSISPEP) was released today as a way to address the suicide crisis in Indigenous communities as Federal Health Minister Sussan Ley, Indigenous affairs Minister Nigel Scullion and Ken Wyatt plan to attend a roundtable with Indigenous leaders and com-munity organisations to address the issue. The ATSISPEP report revealed Indigenous children and young people are particularly vulnerable, comprising 30 per cent of the suicide deaths among those under 18 years of age. Indigenous 15-24 year olds are over five times as likely to suicide as their non-Indigenous peers. While statistics for the rate of suicide of LGBTI Indigenous people do not ex-ist, anecdotal evidence suggests it is alarmingly high considering both groups have higher rates of suicide than the general population, so the intersectionality of identi-ties make them vulnerable to suicide. In recent years we’ve seen the rise of language that sets up older people as ‘winners’ and younger people as ‘losers’ in a war for resources, jobs, and most of all, secure housing. Baby Boomers in particular are cast as a generation that enjoyed a golden era of free education and continuing access to secure, well-paid work. They’re also styled as selfish defenders of their wealth and influence, unwilling to assist younger genera-tions attain the financial security they enjoy. But how accurate is this picture? Findings from the most recent COTA NSW survey suggest older people are acutely aware of the challenges facing younger people, and many are experiencing these challenges themselves. What’s more, our survey indi-cates that many older people are donating money, time and labour to the younger people in their lives.
