Burma
The Lahu are a Sino-Tibetan people, the majority of whom live in Yunnan, China and the Shan States of Burma, though a significant number live in Northern Thailand and Northern Laos. Though there are at least thirty two different sub-groups most of them speak Black Lahu, so all Lahu can communicate with each other though out Lahu Land. The word ‘Lahu’ can be translated as ‘Tiger Born’, perhaps an indication of their toughness. They are known as ‘the hunters’ by surrounding tribes due to their knowledge of and expertise in the jungles. Their traditions speak of a creator God, who someday will bless them. The majority still follow their animistic beliefs.
Philip Young MD is the third generation in his family to work withthe Lahu people. His grandfather William Young originally went toBurma in 1892 as a missionary to the Shan People. It was not untilhe moved to Kengtung in 1900 that he encountered the Lahu people. Phil’s dad, M. Vincent Young translated the New Testament into Lahu and also into the Wa language. After a medical ministry in the Philippines and in the U.S.A., he moved to Maesai Thailand, in the Golden Triangle area where Burma, Laosand Thailand touch each other.
