Kindergarten Pretend and Learn Lesson
Unit: Smart StartPretend and Learn Theme: School House
Implementing the Pretend and Learn Lesson in the Kindergarten ClassroomCenter Introduction
1. Set up the center by using the printable materials and example pictures found below.
2. Introduce the center by brainstorming vocabulary related to a school. The teacher might want to create an anchor chart of these words.
3. Use the CLI strategy “Statues” to have the students create a statue for each vocabulary term.
4. Discuss what happens in a school, who works there, who visits, tools/materials they use, things they do there, etc.
5. Tour the center and model how to use the center with the help of a few students.
6. Discuss “What to Do” and “What Not to Do” in the center.
Center Participation and Organization1. Students can practice packing and unpacking their lunch boxes and
backpacks.2. Students can practice tying their shoes and zipping zippers.3. Students can pretend teach a topic they are familiar with.4. Students can write each other’s names.5. Students can write the alphabet, illustrate the classroom, write numbers, etc.6. When it is time to clean up students will put things back where the teacher
had them set-up.

Writing: Students will write the names of the students in their class, the letters of the alphabet, numbers and words from the word bank on the white boards or paper
Technology: Students can take pictures of each other and items in the classroom with a digital camera or iPad. Then take these pictures back to the Pretend and Learn Center to write the words.
