ear friends, The Covid 2019 has taken its toll on all of us. Many photo events have been either cancelled or postponed indefinitely. Any prediction regarding return of normalcy will be futile at this stage.

The April issue of VF will not be printed but the members will get a PDF version. To prevent rumours and innuendoes FIP is sharing the authentic news on the social media.

The first ever Janata Curfew was announced for Sunday the 22nd of March and FIP announced a contest to keep its members engaged in photo activity at home and results are being shared in this addition of Viewfinder, very soon FIAP also followed the suit and announced a contest with details in this issue of Viewfinder.

Three weeks is not a short period and they say any length of time will pass eventually and so will the three weeks but it brings immense opportunity to clean our hard discs, learn new Photoshop or Light Room techniques and last but not the least prepare ourselves with new Salon images.

FIP is not announcing any change in FIP Convention dates and Election time table as the situation is too fluid at this stage but believe me, we are making regular assessments.

I always say that our Country is the country of festivals. Easter Holidays are lurking on the horizons and I wish all my friends a very happy Easter and the Holy month of Ramzaan is also knocking on our doors with all its sacrifices and celebrations.

POY is open in its new format and the Contest Captain Ms Sona Beniwal has sent a poster to all the members.

Both FIAP as well as FIP have relaxed the rules to allow Online Jury session but FIP office has to be on the guard all the time to safeguard the entrants who are also our paymasters.

As you might have noticed both FIAP Congress and 2020 FIAP B/W Biennial remains cancelled.

Friends, it can not be overemphasised “Stay Home and Stay Safe”.

Prior to this new Palace, Annals of the Mysore Royal Family (Sriman maharaja

THE MYSORE PALACE

Page 7: VIEWFINDER - fip.org.in · Halls viz., Palace Armoury and ... Immediately to the south is the beautiful Kalyana Mantap or the Marriage Pavilion. On the first floor, still facing east,

1630 A.D. it is said to have been rebuilt by Ranadhira Kanteerava Narasaraja Wadeyar, after

it had been struck and damaged by the lightning.

In order to restore the grandeur of the Mysore Palace, Her Highness, the Maharani

Vanivilasa Sannidhana, C.I., then regent, decided to build a new palace on the model and

on the foundations of the old palace. The architectural plans by Mr. Henry Irwin. The

construction which was inaugurated by Her Highness in October of 1897 was completed in

1912.

The main building is a massive three storeyed grey granite building and dominated by a

five storeyed tower covered by a guilded dome. The Palace, like the old, is built around an

open court-yard, called Thotti, open to the sky. To the east of this Thotti on the ground

floor, is the impressive elephant gate. Immediately to the south is the beautiful Kalyana

Mantap or the Marriage Pavilion. On the first floor, still facing east, is the great Durbar

Hall, Divan-E-Aam, measuring 86 m (282.7 feet long) by 39m (129 feet wide). On the same

floor, towards the south is a daintily decorated private Durbar Hall, called Ambavilasa, the

Diwan-E-Khas. The second floor has several rooms and large halls on the sides. The

Kalyana Mantapa or the Marriage Pavilion, in the ground floor, is a beauty to look at. The

octagonal, painted pavilion has a colourful stained-glass ceiling. The designing of the

stained decorations is said to have been done by the artists of Mysore. Apart from the

stained-glass decoration which is the central attraction, the walls of this pavilion are

covered with murals, depicting the famous Mysore Dussehara.

The Mysore Rulers made the Dasara immortal by the grand festivities for ten days,

culminating in the famous procession of the King in a Golden Howdah, on a decorated

elephant.

Page 8: VIEWFINDER - fip.org.in · Halls viz., Palace Armoury and ... Immediately to the south is the beautiful Kalyana Mantap or the Marriage Pavilion. On the first floor, still facing east,

The Golden Howdah was used during the final day of the

Dasara Festivities, Vijayadasami. It is mounted on the

caparisoned Royal Elephant which itself is colourfully

decorated. During the days of yore, the king would sat in the

Howdah accompanied by his brother and nephew. The last

king of the Mysore Royal family to sit in the Golden Howdah

a n d g o i n p r o c e s s i o n d u r i n g D a s a r a w a s S r i

Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar.

The tradition of the Dasara Procession continues to this day

also but the idol of the presiding deity of the Mysore City,

Goddess Chamundeshwari, is taken in procession in the

Golden Howdah. The Howdah is made by using

approximately 80 Kilograms of gold.

However, the Mysore artists under the patronage of and

commissioned by, the noble Krishnaraja Wadeyar-IV, have immortalized the Dussehara

procession, on canvas, in 26 panels, on the walls of the Marriage Pavilion. Thus the

Kalyanamantapa is not only a architectural beauty, but a veritable gallery of paintings.

The public Durbar Hall is a massive pillared hall which deserves to be maintained as such.

The rear walls have paintings by Raja Ravivarma (Rama breaking the Siva Dhawus) and

eight forms of Devi, viz., Kalika, Navadurga, Mahishamardini, Saraswati, Mahalakshmi,

Bhuvaneswari, Gayatri and Rajarajeshwari by a distinguished local artist.

The majestic Durbar Hall can itself be best described in the words of Constance E. Parsons

who says “No short description, if any, can do justice to the beauty of line, wealth of

material, blaze of colour and exuberance of decoration in the great Durbar Hall. Walls vie

with ceilings, columns with doorways, and both by day light and when ablaze with

thousands of fairy lights. The hall gathers up and displays all that poets and artists have

dreamed of the splendid setting of an oriental court; all the glamour and glory of “the

thousand lights at one night.”

This was the public Durbar Hall where the Maharaja used to hold ceremonial Durbar

during Dussehara in the presence of the invited audience. This used to be during the

evenings, the cultural programmes in the open arena would take place before the

illuminated Palace.

The Ambavilasa, which is the Diwan-E-Khas, is the most gorgeously decorated hall, with a

harmonious composition in colours. The beauty of many of the details is unsurpassed in

the Palace. In other words it is called as Private Durbar Hall.

This private Durbar Hall or Diwan-E-Khas was used to hold private audience by the

Maharaja. Now during the Dussehara festivities, the Golden Throne is placed in the

octagonal pavilion on the western end of the hall and the descendant of the Royal Family

holds private Ceremonies and sits on the Golden Throne.

The central aisle has a beautiful stained glass ceiling decorated with delicate designs,

supported by cast-iron pillars, all of which are manufactured by the famous Mcfarlane of

Glasgow. The beautification of the Ambavilasa was entrusted to that celebrated artist of

Karnataka, Sri. K. Venkatappa.

The star attraction of the Mysore Palace is the traditional and ceremonial Golden Throne.

This Golden Umbrella of the Golden Throne which have inherited from their illustrious ancestors, evokes the awe of the Whole World. The Golden Throne is taken out and placed in the rear octagonal part of the Ambavilasa only during the nine or ten days of Dussehara every year it is not available for public, otherwise.

The vast open space, in front of the Palace, with the planned garden that is being laid outs, adds charm and majesty to the entire structure. “The Palace is known for its illumination. The entire building is lined with rows of bulbs, following the contours of the structure, and when lit up, it looks like a Palace of light. It is no wonder that visitors to the Palace exclaim that the Mysore Palace has no comparison of its kind to nay in the world and it is unique.”

PALACE FORT AND GATES

The Palace Fort has five entrances. The Gates, are all built nine in Indo-Sarcenic style. The principal East Gate named Jayamarthanda Gate has a stately and imposing appearance. It was constructed of reinforced concrete. The central archway measuring 60 feet high and 45 feet span. The others are Balarama, Jayarama Gates on the north, the Varaha on the South and the Brahmapuri and Karikal Thotti Gates on the west. Today the visitors to the Palace enter through the southern Gate known as the Varaha Gate.

The Palace consists of several beautiful temples inside and surrounding the Palace.

I must thankful to late Sri. Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, who has given me an opportunity to cover the entire Palaces and other properties belongs to him, as photographed by me. And also I must thankful to Palace Director Sri Subramanya.

Roses are literally the queen of flowers. We

all love and appreciate their beauty. They

send a strong message of love, possess a

heavenly scent and have breathtaking

colors.

So, the story of a little rose begins. It was a

foggy winter morning. The misty situation

forced me to bring the camera out of the bag.

The subdued morning light prominently

focused every leaf. The rose plant began

sprouting the very soft, subtle maroon-red

shoot. The young shoots appear as red for an

thocy an in pigment which protects the tiny leaves

from heat. This pH-dependant process helps the

young stem to mature.

The delicacy and softness of the new branch in a

misty background was my first frame. Next the

appearance of the little bud. The bud gradually

developed. The green calyx helps for nutrition and

protects the growing bud from insects and adverse

weather. Roses do not bloom hurriedly; for beauty,

like any masterpiece, takes time to blossom.

The complete maturation stages of bud were recorded carefully. The blooming rose offers a

powerful joy known only to the heart. As, the corolla portion developed a little, so, the

calyx began to break apart. The rose is fairest when it is budding new. The calyx gradually

unveiled the mysterious hidden softness and unique colour-balance of the petals. If the rose

is beautiful flower, it is also because it opens itself. The phases of morning beauty of the rose

were recorded from different angles to show the sheer colour brilliance. One should enjoy

the beauty of rose at each stage of its life-cycle.

The growth process of the petals was set with a rapid pace. The blooming rose added a little

sprinkle of colour along with beauty.

Nature, the great artist and creator of all the intricate

and perfect beauty utilized a good space of time, for

the complete bloom of the rose. Just as a rosebud opens

up into a beautiful bloom under right conditions, we

should also find what we need to make our dreams

flourish. The exquisite flower took its final shape and

form with a reddish orange colour. This beauty is due

to the bio-photo reactions of the two pigments namely

xanthophyl and carotin with sunlight. The alluring

scent and lovely petals are loved by many.

It's a joy and pleasure for me to observe and digitally memorize the wonderful 'Bud-to-

Bloom'story.

It's a long cherished dream for me to lens certain unique and natural subjects which

commonly drew attention. As, the dream comes true, so the story ends here, with

reminiscence and happy viewing.

Covid-19 is seriously attacking public health. Frontiers are closing, governments are asking people to stay home for preventing its expansion. This is undoubtedly an unknown situation with many social side effects. Although it may sound easy to stay home for one day or two, it can become difficult if more people are obliged to remain home for a couple of weeks or even longer. We are not used to these circumstances and we even ignore how to spend our "free" time.

FIAP is actively participating in the "We Stay Home" campaign. What better than taking pictures when you must stay home? For this reason, FIAP is announcing an international photo competition opened to all photographers of the world, with pictures taken at home during this period. The participation is without entry fees. Instead, for each photographer who participated in this special competition, FIAP is going to contribute a certain amount of money to a world organization specialized in the fight against the Corona Virus (to be advised by the World Health Organization).

The rules of this competition are as follows:

1) No entry fees.

2) One (mixed) section with both Color and B&W digital images.

5) Each photograph must have a unique title. Words such as "Untitled" and "No Title" are not acceptable even as part of an image title, nor are camera capture filenames. Photos with any watermarks are not accepted.

6) Closing Day: April 30, 2020.

7) Judging: May 8, 2020, by the FIAP Board of Directors. An entry may be rejected if it does not conform to the Contest Rules and Conditions.

Jhargram which is just about 154 kms from Howrah Rly Station, is situated in the western

part of Paschim Medinipur. It is the 22nd district of West Bengal. Jhargram is known for its

natural bounty and is a perfect serene and tranquil gateway from the city hustle and bustle.

Beyond the Gangetic plains, Jhargram offers a paradise of most exotic hill ranges of

Belpahari and Kakrajhor in the north to calm and peaceful following of the river

Subrnarekha in the south. The natural beauty of the forest within the vicinity of the town

makes it even more alluring. The tall trees of sal, peasal, teak and mahul along with wildlife

creatures like elephants, deers, various species of birds add to the flavor of the place. It's a

tourists' delight and photographers' cherished canvas in a nutshell. Apart from the natural

flora Jhargram is also known for its ancient temples - (Umapati temple, Kanak temple and

Sabitri temple), historical and royal palaces – (Jhargram palace, Chilkigarh palace,

Kurumbera fort), folk tunes, rhythm and dances of the tribals. Jhargram is a rich store house

of tribal dances and craftsmanship. The Santals, Mundas, Bhumijs, Lodhas and Sabars all

natives co-exist here, and they express their rituals and religious rites and social

performances through their respective folk dance forms. To name a few rare tribal folk

dances are Bhuang, Chang, Chhou, Jhumur, Saharul, Dangrey, Panta, Tusu, Bhadu and

Ranpa.

Unfortunately, such beautiful tribal life and craftsmanship, treasures of nature and a whole

civilization are almost at a verge of extinction. As we approached with this heart wrecking

issue to respected Dr. B. K. Sinha, he immediately granted us his whole hearted support

and permission to conduct an elaborate photography workshop so that we can take a step

forward in protecting and safeguarding our rich and cultural heritage. We are highly

grateful and thankful to him for his kind cooperation. It is needless to say that arranging a

photography workshop was certainly not an easy task and here we would like to take this

opportunity to thank and express our gratitude to our honorable guests of FIP – Mr. Sayan

Sarkar and Ms. Sunita Aich for being a pillar of support from the beginning till the end.

Finally, we would also like to make a special mention of Mr. Mahadeolal for being our

mentor and thoroughly encouraging us throughout the whole event. Without your support

and leadership we would not have been able to make this a grand success. Thank you very

much for the undying support and guidance. We would also like to thank and congratulate

all our participants of this gala event.

Thanks and regards,

GUIDELINES

FIP Interclub

FIP 35th Interclub is due in 2020. This year FIP had introduced some new changes

which has resulted in one of the highest number of participants.

We have been informed that many clubs are using “ fake “ members as club

members. We tend to believe in the integrity of the clubs but we have to safeguard

the interests of all the participants.

1. All participants must be genuine members of the concerned clubs

2. Students of a club running a photographic course will only be treated as a

member if the course is registered with FIP.

3. Any individual found to be participating on behalf of two clubs will lose his

right to participate in Indian Salons for one year and FIP distinctions for 3

years

FIAP is not planning any change in the criteria regarding AFIAP/EFIAP

distinctions for the year 2020.

FIP recognised photographic courses

FIP is always willing to help the clubs who run photographic courses. Since the

clubs earn a decent money it is but logical that FIP gets a fair share of the earnings.

FIP is aware that some clubs are indulging in all kind of tricks to avoid paying the

full amount due to FIP. I wish to tell such clubs and their worthy officials that “

your club may become rich by denying few thousand bucks to FIP but believe

me FIP will not become poor by your acts ” and your lost goodwill and

credibility will be worth 100 times more the amount for which FIP was taken for a

ride.

From April 2020 all new courses registered with FIP will be charged Rs 5000.00 as

registration fee per batch and Rs 750/- per student. At the end of the course FIP

will furnish certificates to all the registered students only. All the certificates will

be printed by FIP in a similar design. FIP logo and the corresponding club's logo

will be there with two signatures from the club and one from FIP.

Secretary General will NOT pen his signature on any other certificate.

11. M.C. Shekhar - 5 years ban - 2018 to 2022.

Clubs banned till further notice :-

1. Kriti Photography Club and any other club associated with Tirtha Dasgupta.

2. Digital Artwork Foundation.

3. 1st Click It International.

4. Purulia International Digital Salon.

The above mentioned clubs can not organise any FIP recognised Salon or their members can not participate in FIP/FIAP distinctions.

All salon organisers are advised to ensure the above sanctions.

Besides, Fotorbit Pune members can not participate in any Indian Salon as a group. They are free to participate individually.

It was also resolved that henceforth though any individual can be a member of more than one club but for the sanctity of Salons he or she will be allowed to participate from one club only. No one can jump from one club to another without NOC from the two clubs involved.

MPC club of Midnapore has been banned for 7 years from any salon related or distinction related activities. Mr Sudip Sahu have been banned from organising any salon or distinction related activities for a period of 7 years as per the decision of Governing body at Kaziranga on 12.11.18.

Further FIAP has retrospectively withdrawn the patronage to the MPC, 2018 hence any acceptance or awards earned in the MPC salon 2018 will not count for FIP/FIAP distinction in future.

I am pleased to share that1. Mr Raktim Bandyopadhyay is free to participate in any FIP activity including Salons.2. Mr Soutam Banerjee is free to participate in all FIP activities
