On Ready Mix Concrete and Aggregates1.  Why should we use Ready Mix Concrete?

Working with concrete on job sites is a tedious and problematic matter. Delivery of cement, sand, crushed rock and having a ready supply of water creates a logistic nightmare and makes the work area messy. In addition one small error in the on-site mix could end up in whole batches being rejected due to their unsuitability for the job. One unique and common solution to this problem is ready mix concrete.

2.  What are batching plants?

Ready mix concrete manufacturers use the same cement, aggregate, additives and water, but the product is created off-site at Batching Plants where all the constituent materials are stored mixed and delivered in bulk to the construction area. Large trucks with revolving hoppers replace the smaller versions used directly on the site. The concrete is ordered directly from a local supplier who can create the required blends at the plant before delivery to the job site.

3.  What are Concrete aggregates?

Concrete aggregates are materials mixed with cement to create a strong, hard and long lasting product. These are usually fine sand, gravel, crushed stones in different sizes or crushed glass. Different grades are available based on the type of job. Aggregates reinforce the cement making the concrete mix much stronger, durable and long lasting. Aggregates can be chosen from fine and coarse grades depending on the end product required. Aggregates should be free of dirt, chemicals, clays etc. in order that there are no unwanted chemical reactions that may interfere with how the concrete sets.

4.  Is the texture of aggregates important?

Texture of aggregates is also important. Porous materials are not advised to be used as water will be sucked up and thus creating the requirement of more water in the concrete mixture and thus weakening the overall mix. Fine sand and crush rocks or even glass could be used.

5.  What is Curing and why is it important?

Curing is one of the most important steps in quality concrete construction and one of the most neglected. Effective curing is absolutely essential for surface durability. Fresh concrete must be kept warm and moist until the mixing water combines chemically with the cement (hydration). Without curing, the strength of the concrete is basically reduced in half.

It is important to cure concrete to retain as much moisture as possible in the concrete for the first three to seven days of its life. Curing can range from 3 to 28 days and for every batch prepared the curing period is taken into consideration. Curing also helps to maintain concrete temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees, which is helpful in the concrete gaining maximum strength. Curing is usually done by applying a coat of liquid curing compound to the concrete as soon as it is hard enough to walk on without making marks on the surface.
