The general goal of this class is to provide students specializing in linguistics with the necessary background, knowledge and information concerning the main phenomena studied by theoretical syntax.
More specifically, upon completion of this class, students must be able:
To read and understand basic literature on syntax. To analyze syntactically sentences from Greek and other languages της Ελληνικής with the aid of
tree-diagrams representing the hierarchical and linear relations between the various elements. To describe and analyze with the aid of tree-diagrams the systematic relations between
sentences (Transitive-Passive-Intransitive, Declaratives – Questions, Main-Embedded). To describe and analyze with tree-diagrams the differences between languages concerning word
order.
To follow a linguistic argument based on the criteria of observational, descriptive and explanatory adequacy.

BROAD KNOWLEDGE/COMPETENCIES
Development of independent, creative and deductive thinking
Exercising critical thinking on scientific studies and organizational skills Practicing self-improvement Working in an interdisciplinary environment with multi-cultural data
3. COURSE DESCRIPTIONOverall the course aims to provide students with practical and comprehensible information on the most frequent methods used in language acquisition research and the issues that are associated with these methods. The main aim is to present the rationale of the research methods on language acquisition. In doing so, we will discuss the main approaches and tools that the research on child language has adopted and analyze the fundamental principles of the theoretical approaches to language development. Special emphasis will be given on the design of a method in relation to the topic under investigation. More specifically, the course will deal with the research methods for data-collection and the approaches to data-analysis within the frame of a theoretical perspective. Within the various approaches, we will examine the role of external and language internal factors that may affect data-collection (e.g. biological and cognitive factors, extra-linguistic factors; age and bilingualism etc) and the ways to determine the linguistic conditions under investigation. We will discuss the role of baseline tasks and the statistical methods used in the analysis of the collected data.
Moreover the course will emphasize on the comparison and evaluation of various methods (e.g. naturalistic versus experimental methods) in relation to the research topic and the ways that previous research on similar topics can provide supporting evidence (i.e. the distinction between primary and secondary research).

17. LEARNING OUTCOMESLEARNING OUTCOMES
The general goal of the seminar is to introduce students to the concept of grammatical Case as well as the methods employed in linguistics for the comparative synchronic analysis of case phenomena and their historical evolution.
Upon completion of the seminar, the students must be able to: Understand the concept of Case and the distinction between Abstract Case and
morphological case. Know the basic theories of Abstract and morphological Case and how they can be used
for the synchronic and diachronic analysis of case phenomena in natural language. Understand the terminology they encounter in the bibliography. Successfully apply the formalism that will enable them to express the formal
similarities and differences between case systems. Be able to identify the sources of variation in the case systems of different languages
and the ways in which they evolve historically. Understand the properties of the Greek case system, the historical evolution from
Ancient to Modern Greek and the similarities and differences between Greek and other languages, Indo-European and non Indo-European, spoken in Eurasia and other areas in the world.
