WEEKLY ADDRESS: Cutting the Deficit

and Creating Jobs

WASHINGTON- In this weeks address, President Obama spoke to the American people aboutreducing the nations deficit and creating jobs across the country. The President emphasized theneed for Government to live within its means just as families doin order to put the nation ona fiscally sustainable path which is critical to long-term economic growth and job creation. Tosolve the deficit problem, Democrats and Republicans must make tough choices and look atevery tax loophole and program for opportunities to save money. President Obama stressed theimportance of trimming the budget while also making critical investments in education, research,and technology to spur job growth and invest in our future. As families and friends join togetherto celebrate Independence Day, the President reminded Americans that since our founding, wehave overcome challenges by coming together to solve our nations problems.

Right now, there are a lot of folks who are still struggling with the effects of therecession. Theyre wondering how theyd deal with an unexpected expense if their car breaks

down. Theyre worried about layoffs. Theyre not sure if they can help their kids pay forcollege. And for many families, these challenges were around long before the recession hit in2007.

I ran for President because I believed in an America where ordinary folks could get ahead; where

if you worked hard, you could have a better life. Thats been my focus since I came into office,and that has to be our focus now. Its one of the reasons why were working to reduce ournations deficit. Government has to start living within its means, just like families do. We haveto cut the spending we cant afford so we can put the economy on sounder footing, and give ourbusinesses the confidence they need to grow and create jobs.

The good news is, Democrats and Republicans agree on the need to solve the problem. And overthe last few weeks, the Vice President and I have gotten both parties to identify more than $1trillion in spending cuts. Thats trillion with a t. But after a decade in which Washington ranup the countrys credit card, weve got to find more savings to get out of the red. That meanslooking at every program and tax break in the budget every single one to find places to cut

waste and save money. It means well have to make tough decisions and scale back worthyprograms. And nothing can be off limits, including spending in the tax code, particularly theloopholes that benefit very few individuals and corporations.

Now, it would be nice if we could keep every tax break, but we cant afford them. Because if wechoose to keep those tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires, or for hedge fund managers andcorporate jet owners, or for oil and gas companies pulling in huge profits without our help thenwell have to make even deeper cuts somewhere else. Weve got to say to a student, You dontget a college scholarship. We have to say to a medical researcher, You cant do that cancerresearch. We might have to tell seniors, You have to pay more for Medicare.

That isnt right, and it isnt smart. Weve got to cut the deficit, but we can do that while makinginvestments in education, research, and technology that actually create jobs. We can live withinour means while still investing in our future. Thats what we have to do. And Im confident thatthe Democrats and Republicans in Congress can find a way to give some ground, make somehard choices, and put their shoulders to wheel to get this done for the sake of our country.

On Monday, we celebrate Independence Day, the day we declared a new nation, based onrevolutionary idea: that people ought to determine their own destiny; that freedom and self-governance werent gifts handed to us by kings or emperors, but the rights of every humanbeing. Weve learned in the years since that democracy isnt always pretty. We havearguments. We disagree. But time and again weve proven that we could come together to solveproblems. We remember that while we may not see eye-to-eye on everything, we share a lovefor this country and a faith in its future. Thats the spirit we need to harness now. Thats howwell meet this challenge and reach a brighter day. Thanks for listening, and have a wonderfulfourth of July.
