Grading Criteria

Unit aim: Provide students with an opportunity to develop a focused, in-depth, understanding of the range, characteristics, complexity and contexts that define media and communication activity. It will require the student, through exploration and investigation to enter into a more formal dialogue of personal interrogation and understanding designed to confirm strengths, enthusiasms and ambitions.

Learning outcomesOn successful completion of this unit the student will:

1. Understand the characteristics and context for a chosen media and communication activity.

2. Be able to use knowledge of the characteristics and context of a media and communication activity.

3. Be able to use evaluation in support of creative media production.

LO1.1 Research:Analyse the conventions of youth in film. You need to look at the two different ways youth are represented in film – both positive and negative Secondary Research on stereotypical representation of `Youth in film’ – Using the internet and books (not examples), research the conventions of Youth in films. Don’t just analyses programmes but look for helpful articles such as https://www.theguardian.com/society/joepublic/2009/dec/15/youth-media-summit

You need to focus on Negative portrayal Gang culture Ethnic groups Positive portrayal Education and sport (positive) Gun crime Knife crime Poverty

Secondary Research on actual programmes - Examples – find at least 3

examples of representation of youth in film

- Look at Coach Carter for a positive as well as Gangsters paradise (bad turn good) or Juice. Ferries Buellers day off was seen as youth rebellion – compare the difference between then and now. Harry Brown for British Grim.

- These should be in-depth analysis of the videos looking at language used, locations (council estate V playing field), lighting, narrative, props (guns etc..) and the moral of the story – are they all the same?

- You should refer to specific time codes in the videos - Look at the camera shots / narrative / sounds

1. Harvard Referencing – Ensure all of your research is Harvard Referenced. This is easiest if you complete it as you work rather

than just doing

Page 6: VIIBE€¦ · Web viewLocation recces Grading Criteria Unit aim: Provide students with an opportunity to develop a focused, in-depth, understanding of the range, characteristics,

it all at the end. The more references you use, the greater the reliability of research.

LO1.2 Propose a brief: Based on your research from Task 1, come up with 2 moral stories you would like to produce – 1 should be a representation of good and one the representation of negative You will then need to produce the following in order to demonstrate your understanding of the genre

1. The open scenes for TWO different representations.

Positive v negative

● Scripts

● Storyboard

● Music

● Camera shots

● List of archive footage used

● Equipment needed

● Location recces

Your finished product should be of a high standard and demonstrate an awareness of key techniques and concepts. This will include

LO3 Evaluation:

At the end of each LO, you should be completing evaluative journal entries - evaluating, analysing and highlighting areas for improvement.

It is extremely important that these are completed as you work and not just at the end. Please remember to take photos during production and screenshots as you edit. All of this will help to support what you are evaluating.

Follow the guidance available at http://thcvibe.weebly.com/lo3-be-able-to-use-evaluation-in-support-of-creative-media-production.html to help you through each week’s entry.
