VIII Oil and Gas Horizons Congress at Gubkin University, Moscow,
Russian, 23rd -25th November 2016

From 23rd to 25th of November 2016, Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas (National
Research University) held annual Oil and Gas Horizons Congress. This is the 8th conference that
was held by Gubkin University SPE Student Chapter and the administration of Gubkin University,
Moscow, Russia. Year by year we widen the geography of participants with the aim of
international scientific community integration. In 2015 170 participants from 38 universities of 18
countries visited our Congress. In this year, more students from other countries (Germany, Russia,
Austria, Australia, USA, etc) participated in this congress. This congress has become traditional
and inalienable part of international work of Gubkin University, being a large international
platform for sharing knowledge, experience and innovative ideas with each other.
Some students Institute of Petroleum Engineering and Institute of Geothermal Engineering,
Clausthal University of Technology, Samuel Zulkhifly Sinaga, Syouma Hikmahtiar, Rayner Susanto,
Nicolas Karasz, and Yury Ovsyannikov, participated in this student congress as student presenters
and representatives from Clausthal University of Technology SPE student chapter. There were
several programs in this student congress:
1. Plenary session
Plenary session is devoted to companies’ lectures. There were several keynote speakers
invited including Mr. Darcy W. Spady, P. Eng. (2018 SPE President). The topic of the plenary
session was related to Artic drilling, opportunities and challenges, and current situation in
Artic area.
2. Soft skill workshop
Soft Skills Workshop was experts’ speech about questions of self-improvement, time
management, convince skill, negotiation skills and leadership skills. 2018 SPE President
Mr. Darcy W. Spady, P. Eng., shared his experiences and knowledges to students,
particularly he offered tips and solution to face the current low oil price situation.
3. Technical session
The technical sessions consist of two parts: Poster Session and Paper Session. Paper
Session was devoted to the presentation, consideration, and discussion of the
participants’ works, including students’, PhD, and young professionals’ papers. Professors
of Gubkin University, experts, representatives of oil and gas companies were invited as the
congress judges. There were 110 paper presentations in total.
Poster Session was a presentation of the scientific works of participants at the special
stands. Each of the presenters presented briefly their posters to the judges and afterwards
everybody will have a possibility to ask questions.
4. Career pathways fair
In career pathways, there were series of lectures and master classes from specialists of
different sectors of the industry: downstream, midstream, upstream. Students were given
chances to discuss directly with professionals from oil and gas industry. The program was
opened and led by 2018 SPE President Mr. Darcy W. Spady, P. Eng.
5. Petro Olympic games
An intellectual quiz “PetroOlympic Games” was focused on the theoretical knowledge in
the oil and gas industry. Students were gathered to compete in teams and were given
question to answer. The questions were based on disciplines such as Geosciences,
Chemical Engineering, Drilling, Mechanical Engineering, Reservoir Engineering, Offshore
Petroleum Engineering, Oil and Gas Transportation and Storage.
6. SPE student chapter presentation
This meeting is one of the key events being held in order to discuss the development of
relations between universities and student sections of SPE student chapters. The chapters’
presentations was devoted to the exchange of experience, as well as to the establishment
of friendly relations with the representatives of all chapters participating at the Congress.
2018 SPE President Mr. Darcy W. Spady, P. Eng., led the round table meeting. Significant
issues and challenges were discussed and solutions were established to improve the
relationship of SPE student chapters.
7. Gala dinner
The Gala Dinner was intended to sum up the results of three hardworking and fruitful days
of the congress. There were also official speeches from Russia Government
representative, Gubkin University representative, companies and sponsors.
8. Visiting company
The main aim of visiting company was to show students the work of big companies
through excursions. Students were presented the life inside the companies.
In technical session, following students presented their research papers:

A Comprehensive Case Study of Heat to Electrical Energy Potential from the Produced
Water of an Oil Field (won 2nd prize)
Review of Friction-Related and Galling Phenomena in Premium OCTG Connections
2. Rayner Susanto
Reservoir Modelling of Hydraulic Fracturing Scenario in Shale Gas Field with the
Sensitivity Analysis of Fracture Spacing and Fracture Half-Length (won 1st prize)
3. Syouma Hikmahtiar
Determining Hydrocarbon Prospective Zone using CWT-based Seismic Attributes and
Acoustics Impedance
In international SPE student chapter round table meeting, following students represented
Clausthal University of Technology SPE student chapter:
1. Nicolas Karasz
2. Yury Ovsyannikov
Samuel Zulkhifly Sinaga won the 2nd prize for paper presentation and 1st prize for PetroOlympic
competition, while Rayner Susanto won 1st prize for paper presentation. Overall the student
congress offered a great opportunity to meet professionals and students from all over the world.
In addition to the networking opportunities, the conference also offered a great chance to learn
new knowledge and technologies from technical session and plenary session. Our chapter really
appreciated the opportunity to go and hopefully we will have the chance to go again in future.
