FENCING The fencers will return to action this weekend at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships, hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. The Vikings haven’t competed since the Northwestern Duals on Feb. 5. After this weekend, CSU will be the host site of the NCAA Midwest Regional on March 10-11.

MEN’S TENNIS Cleveland State will continue the spring season this weekend, as they travel to No. 56 Michigan State for a 6:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, March 3 before hosting Case Western Reserve at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 4. The Vikings split their matches last weekend, falling to Illinois State (4-3) and defeating Northern Illinois (5-2). Nolan Marks was a perfect 2-for-2 in singles play over the weekend, while Yannick Goossens picked up his first win at No. 1 singles against Northern Illinois. The duo of Jorg van der Vloet and Matt Kuelker also posted a perfect 2-0 record in doubles play, as they are now tied for the team lead with four victories this spring.

SOFTBALL The softball team picked up its first win of the 2012 campaign over the weekend at the Frost Classic, hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chat-tanooga. CSU beat Tennessee Tech 2-0 on Friday (Feb. 24) as part of a 1-4 trip. First baseman Dara Toman raised her average to .407 and belted her second home run of the season in Tennessee. The Vikings return to action this weekend with five games in three days in Athens, Ga. as part of the fourth annual Bulldog Invitational.

WRESTLING The CSU grapplers are preparing for the Eastern Wrestling League Tournament which will be held on Sun-day (March 4) in Clarion, Pa. Last year, the Vikings fin-ished seventh and were led by Ben Willeford who placed fourth at 125 pounds during his true freshman season.

WOMEN’S TENNIS The Vikings will begin a seven-match road swing this weekend, traveling to Dayton and Indiana for two contests. CSU will take on the Flyers at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday (March 3) before facing the Hoosiers on Sunday (March 4), also at 4:00 p.m. Cleveland State split its matches last weekend, dropping a hard fought match to Bowling Green (5-2) and defeating Oakland (7-0). Both Alex Power and Nicole Janek went 2-0 in singles action over the weekend, while Janek and Maria Lazaris won both of their doubles matches. Lazaris, who posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Oakland, is now just two wins shy of reaching 50 wins on her career. Janek is also closing in on the milestone, as she currently has 43 career wins.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL The Vikings will host Youngstown State on Saturday (March 3) in their final regular season contest of the year. Saturday’s contest, which is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start, will serve as Senior Day as the Vikings honor the 2012 senior class. Cleveland State had a pair of rough losses last week-end, as the Vikings fell at Detroit (65-55) and at Wright State (100-73) in their final regular season road swing. At Detroit, Kiersten Green tied her career-high with 12 points while Shalonda Winton tallied her 23rd double-digit game with 26 points against the Titans. For the sixth time this season, four Vikings scored in double-figures at Wright State, including Winton who notched her 14th double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Honesty King (11), Kiersten Green (10) and Janelle Adams (10) also tallied double-digits.

MEN’S BASKETBALL Cleveland State clinched the No. 2 seed in this week’s Horizon League Championship and has received two byes to the semifinals of the league tournament. The Vikings will play an opponent to be determined from the group of Detroit, Youngstown State, Green Bay and Loy-ola in the semifinals on Saturday (March 3) at 6:00 p.m. EST at Valparaiso. Should CSU win, the Vikings would play in the championship game at 9:00 p.m. EST on Tues-day (March 6). If Valparaiso wins its semifinal game, the game would be played there. If CSU wins and Valpo loses in the semifinals, the championship contest would be played in Cleveland. The Vikings went 2-1 last week to clinch the No. 2 seed. CSU fell at Green Bay on Tuesday, but rebounded to defeat Detroit and Wright State at home over the weekend to snap a five-game losing streak. Anton Grady scored a career-high 23 points at Green Bay, while freshman Marlin Mason tallied a career-best 15 points and nine rebounds in the win over Detroit. In Saturday’s Senior Day victory over Wright State, it was only fitting that seniors Trey Harmon, Jeremy Montgom-ery and Aaron Pogue led the way. Harmon scored 20 points, while Montgomery added 17 and Pogue scored seven.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING Cleveland State took all three freestyle relays and senior Kacey Cummings swept the diving events to help the Vikings place second at the 2012 Swimming and Div-ing Championships which were held Feb. 22-25 in Brown Deer, Wis. Last year, the Vikings placed third at the league meet and were aided last week by victories from Alice Som-merville (50 free), Joanna Olsson (400 IM) and Alexan-dra Johansson (100 fly). Mix in multiple top-three finishes from senior Carys Behn and solid times from a depth of swimmers and the Vikings certainly closed the season in high fashion.

After placing third last season at the Horizon League Swimming and Div-ing Championships, the Vikings improved a spot this time around and took second at the league meet held Feb. 22-25 in Brown Deer, Wis. Cleveland State took three relays (200 free, 200 and 400 medley) and re-ceived a pair of wins from sophomore Justin Kermack (400 IM, 200 fly) to lead the charge. Diver Josh Gonzalez won the 3-meter board while Berry Thompson (100 free) and Nathan Grant (200 breast) each earned a league title.

Kacey Cummings was named the Horizon League ‘Diver of the Year’ after sweeping both boards at the league meet over the week-end. She won the 1-meter diving event on Thursday (Feb. 23) with a score of 270.90 and came back to steal the show on Saturday (Feb. 25).

She recorded a score of 284.05 in the 3-meter diving prelims and finished the meet off in the finals with a 300.95 - a new school re-cord. This was just the third time in the last nine years that a fe-male diver swept both events at the league meet.
