Viking Voice
Mardi Gras was on Tuesday, February 17, 2015. We hope you enjoyed
the colorful parade of smiles and the purple, green, and yellow. Fat
Tuesday is the day before Jesus spent forty days in the desert without
food or water. Fasting helps us prepare for Easter. Mardi Gras is the
last day before Lent, so what did you give up? Chocolate? Madden? So-
cial media? We celebrate the day with parties and fun! Because we are
Catholic, we celebrated Fat Tuesday with parties in our classrooms
and delicious king cakes. In fact, Mardi Gras or FAT TUESDAY is the
last day you can eat king cake.

Ash Wednesday
By: Diego Guajardo and Benjamin Gasca
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent in the Western Christian Church, marked by
services of penitence. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. Its official name is
“Day of Ashes,” so called because of the practice of rubbing ashes on one’s fore-
head in the sign of a cross. Since it is exactly 40 days, excluding Sundays, before
Easter Sunday, it will always fall on a Wednesday. God formed Adam out of the 'dust'
of the earth, which we read about in Genesis 2:7. In addition, Jesus healed the blind
man with clay in John 9:6. We mark ourselves with ashes as a 'new beginning' at the
onset of Lent, allowing the life of Jesus Christ to make us whole and new again.

Super Bowl XLIX was a great battle of two teams! The Seahawks and Pa-
triots played a tough game and both did a very good job! The Patriots
came out with the win. The final score was 24-28. In this picture below,
Malcolm Butler made a game winning interception at the right time to
cinch the Patriots win in the Super Bowl.
A lot of fans were disappointed in the Seahawk’s offensive play call in the
final seconds. Most of them wanted to them to run right up the middle
with Marshawn Lynch, and he also said that they should have given him
the ball. But the Pats came out with the win and congrats to them!

How did Valentine’s Day Originate?
By: Sean B. and David R.
Valentine’s Day is celebrated all across the globe, but where did it originate
from? Well, it’s actually the name of a famous saint named St. Valentine. St. Valentine
went to jail for performing weddings for soldiers of Rome who were forbidden to
marry anyone. While he was in prison, he healed the jailer’s daughter. Before he
was executed, he wrote the jailer’s daughter a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a
farewell. And that’s how Valentine’s Day originated.

St. Theresa Welcomes Softball!
St. Theresa has not had a softball team in many years and is look-
ing forward to the upcoming season. Ms. Hasson and Ms. Chau-
mont are coaching the team this year and told us they are very ex-
cited to see the girls learn and play their first game next week!
Good luck to the Lady Vikings!
