Manually Variable Aperture You may select the size of your lensdiaphragm opening, across thepossible f-stops of f/4 (greatestaperture), f/5.6, f/8, f/11, and f/16(smallest aperture). The greater theaperture, the more light is admittedthrough the lens. The smaller theaperture, the greater the depth offield (total amount of image infocus.)

Coated ViewfinderAn amber-coated viewfinderincreases contrast and visibility inlow-light and nasty conditions.Inside the viewfinder are parallaxcorrection lines for shooting closerthan 1m (3.25') away, and charmingweather-symbol signs to indicateyour aperture setting.

FilmThe Vilia operates with all varietiesof 35mm film. Color negative, slide,and black & white will all yieldfabulous results. Development canbe done at any 35mm film processor (lab, supermarket, drugstore, etc)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USEA. Film LoadingOn the right side of your camera isthe Rear Door Release (6). Push itdown to open Rear Door (13).Insert your film into the left side ofthe camera. Bring your film leaderacross the lens and slip it inside aslit on the Take-up Spool (15).Ensure that the Transport Sprocket(14) teeth are correctly matchedwith the film perforations.

Close the camera back and pushthe Advance Lever (12) to the right,cocking the shutter and advancingone frame. Note: When your film iscorrectly loading, you will see theRewind Crank (4) rotate each timeyou advance the film. Advance afew frames, using Shutter Lever (1)to release the shutter after eachadvance.

B. ASA SettingTurn ASA Ring (11) to your corresponding film speed. Theavailable values are ASA 25, 50,100, and 200. For speeds greaterthan 200, select 200 regardless.

D. Film Rewind and Unloading

RewindWhen you have reached the end ofyour film, the Advance Lever (12)will no longer advance. First,depress Rewind Button (19) andhold it in. Next, fold back RewindCrank (4) and grip the fun littlewheel at the top of it between yourthumb and forefinger. Now, rotatethe Crank clockwise (see the littlearrow for direction) and turn it untilyou no longer feel any resistance.The film is now fully rewound

UnloadingDepress Rear Door Release (6) toopen Rear Door (13). Pull up theRewind Crank (4) and take out yourfilm. It's ready for development!

E. Flash UseYour Vilia includes both a Hot-Shoe(2) attachment and Flash Plug (5)for the attachment of accessoryflashes. Please note, the Vilia is anolder camera and does NOT workwith every hot shoe flash, includingthe Lomography MiniFlash.

The Vilia will synch with a flash atany shutter speed. Generally,choosing 1/60 speed and a mediumaperture, either f/8 or f/5.6 willwork the best with a regular flash.If your flash is too powerful, youcan either raise the shutter speedto 1/125 and/or decrease the aperture to f/11 or f/16,

The “B” setting allows for greatflash effects. When a flash is synched with the Vilia it will fire assoon as the Shutter Lever (1) isdepressed. With “B” selected, youcan then hold open the shutter forseveral seconds after the flashfires, thereby creating a colorstreaked background against yoursharp, flashed subject.

Alternately, you can hold your flashin your hands and fire it from a diffe-rent angle. Aim the Vilia at yoursubject, open the shutter and hold itopen with the Shutter Lever (1).Shoot your flash manually with thetest button from a crazy angle (abo-ve the head, under the chin, side ofthe face) and close the shutter. Thisallows for exciting background blurring and flashed light perspectives!

F. Care & ProtectionStore your Vilia in a dry place whennot in use. Protect it from dirt, moisture, dust, bumping, jostling,and otherwise nasty treatment.Keep it inside the included carrycase when transporting the camera.When you are done shooting, makesure the shutter is not still cocked,as this may damage the mechanismover time. Never leave your Vilia indirect sunlight or intense heat for anextended period of time. Whenusing your Vilia in very cold weather, keep it inside your coatand take it out only for shooting.Clean the lens surface with a softcloth only. Do not use any solventsor chemicals around the lens. If thelens becomes dirty, clean with asmall amount of rubbing alcohol ona cotton swab.

G. Warranty & Support Your Vilia Includes a 90-day limitedwarranty from the LomographicSociety International. The warranty is effective followingyour receipt of the camera. In theevent of a manufacturer defect, you will be offered an exchange for another identical product or equivalent value in the LomographicOnline shop. Damage caused by misuse, incorrect handling, or abuse of theproduct is not covered. C. Shooting Pictures

Distance SettingThe Focus Ring (9) shows the available distance focus values inmeters. They are: 0.8 1 meter (3.25 feet) 1.2 meter (4 feet) 1.5 meter (5 feet) 2 meter (6.5 feet) 2.5 meter (8.25 feet) 4 meter (13 feet) 8 meter (25 feet) ∞ Infinity

Estimate the distance to your subject and set the ring accordingly. This is important toremember every time, or your willget blurry shots. Don’t worry toomuch soon, the TRIPLET Lens (7)has a strong focal depth, so a subject at 1.5 meters away photographed with a distance setting of 1 meter or 1.2 meters willstill be in focus.

Correct Exposure SettingThe Vilia has a clever system todetermine correct exposure in daytime. Look at the Shutter SpeedRing (8). On the top is listed theavailable shutter speeds (inseconds) of 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30,and B (“Bulb setting, in which theshutter will stay open as long asthe Shutter Lever is depressed).On the bottom are correspondingASA speeds to the shutter speeds,in which ASA 200 matches 1/250,ASA 100 matches 1/125, ASA 50matches 1/60, and ASA 25 matches1/30. Set your shutter speed to thestated equivalent of your film’s ASA Speed.

The selected shutter speed shouldline up with the small straight lineon the top middle of your lens barrel.

Now, look through the viewfinder.On the bottom, there are smallweather symbols that correspondto your Aperture setting. The aperture is an iris-like opening inthe lens which regulates the lightadmitted through it. Move theAperture Selection (17) to the weather symbol that most resembles your outside condition -full sun (f/16), partial sun (f/11), lightclouds (f/8), heavy clouds (f/5.6), orovercast (f/4). You now have thecorrect exposure for a daytime shot!

Some sample combinations of this system are:

ASA 100 - Shutter Speed 1/125 -Bright Sun - Aperture f/16

ASA 25 - Shutter Speed 1/30 -Heavy Clouds - Aperture f/5.6

Creative ApertureManual aperture controls enableyou to select the size of your lens diaphragm opening, across thepossible f-stops of f/4 (greatest possible aperture), f/5.6, f/8, f/11,and f/16 (smallest possible aperture). The greater the aperture, the more light is admitted through the lens. The smaller theaperture, the greater the possible depth of field (total amount of yourimage in focus.)

Example A Your exterior light is low. Choosinga large aperture (f/4) allows for a shorter required shutter time forproper exposure, thereby lessening the chance of camera shake orimage blurring

Example B You want both your foreground andbackground to be in focus. Choosea small aperture (f/16) to maximize“depth of field,” allowing the lens and film to render the majority ofthe image in correct focus

Example CYou would like to create a portrait.Choose a large aperture (f/4) to render your close foreground infocus, imposed against a very blurred background. Alternately,choose a medium aperture (f/5.6 orf/8) on a subject at medium focaldistance, highlighting it in focusbetween a slightly out-of-focusforeground and a very out-of-focusbackground.

When varying your aperture fromthe “Correct Exposure System” ofthe Vilia, you have to guess anappropriate shutter speed. Thiswill come easily with practice, but

use the following for a guidelinewith ASA 100 film (the best choicefor all-around Vilia shootings)

Bright Daytime at F/4 or F/5.6 =1/250 speed. At a smaller aperture,stop the speed down to 1/125.

Cloudy or Obscured Daytime at F/4or F/5.6 = 1/125 speed. At a smalleraperture, stop the speed down to1/60. Hold the camera very steadyor screw in a tripod to TripodThread (20) to avoid blurring or“Camera shake.”

Snap the Photo Easy! After all your settings arecorrect, Depress Shutter Lever (1)to fire a shot. Advance Lever (12)takes you to the next frame, andExposure Counter (18) counts up by "1".
