RAF SCAMPTON UPDATE
The most important message I have for you all is the wonderful news that:
RAF SCAMPTON WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL AT LEAST THE END OF THIS DECADE.
As you are all undoubtedly aware, much uncertainty over the future of the Station has been
with us for a number of years. In December last year it was announced that a new review of the Sta-
tion’s future would be conducted. I am pleased to announce that that review has concluded with the
following recommendations:
1. The Red Arrows and No 1 Air Control Centre will remain at RAF Scampton until at
least the end of the decade, removing uncertainty about the immediate future of the base.
2. Essential airfield operating surface work will be carried out this year to ensure that the
Red Arrows can continue to operate safely from RAF Scampton.
3. Work to examine future income generation and potential sponsorship for the Red Ar-
rows has been initiated and will report towards the end of 2012.
As you all can imagine, everyone at RAF Scampton, both military personnel and our civilian
colleagues, are absolutely delighted with this news and I am sure you, our friends in the local com-
munity, echo these sentiments.
Another significant event that took place recently was the official re-opening of the Station
Museum. We now have a perfect location (the original 617 Sqn hanger and annex building) in which
to record and present the history of what is certainly one of the Royal Air Force’s most historical
bases. We have even renovated Wing Commander Guy Gibson’s original office! I can highly recom-
mend to all of you to come and visit; simply contact the museum curator through our Station web-
site.
Finally, it remains for me to say Station personnel are now gearing up for the busy summer
ahead, with the Red Arrows fully committed to their display programme and No 1 Air Control Cen-
tre contributing to the Air Security Plan for the Olympics. We will all be extremely busy but I would
like to take this opportunity to wish you all a great summer!

Editor’s Jottings… Hello again!
We are now in the throes of what continues to promise to be a “summer” full of activities -
but the weather doesn’t seem to understand what it’s supposed to be doing.
The Jubilee celebrations are still in full swing across the nation and there were local events
over the holiday weekend, a couple of which, are featured in this issue. There may have
been more unreported.
I was fortunate to be invited to the Jubilee Picnic at Burghley House for the Counties of Lin-
colnshire, Northamptonshire, Rutland and Leicestershire. What a quintessentially English
event it was! There were people dressed as if for a Royal Garden Party or Royal Ascot, lots of
military uniforms and people like me who went prepared for the worst that the elements
could throw at us - i.e. waterproof and scruffy! The Queen arrived by helicopter, had lunch in
a tent, planted a tree and left in a Range Rover, processing through the grounds and 8,000
people picnicking. Military bands performed and there were displays by the Blades Aero-
batic Display Team (truly spectacular!), the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and a flypast by
the Red Arrows. It was a most enjoyable day - and it didn’t rain!
I don’t think you would find a similar ambience, with people mixing in such a relaxed way,
rubbing shoulders with Lords Lieutenants of Counties - not to mention the Queen, herself,
anywhere else but in our islands but, particularly in England.
I write this just a few days before the Olympic Flame passes through Lincolnshire and in the
middle of the Euros and then there will come the Olympics, Paralympics, Shakespeare plays
being performed and other cultural events taking place everywhere - and Wimbledon.
Whilst it is all very exciting, it will be nice to get back to a less hectic pace of life by the time
the next issue (September - deadline 18th August) comes out.

NOTES OF THE MEETING OF SCAMPTON PARISH COUNCIL HELD AT
7.30PM ON THURSDAY 7th JUNE 2012, AT BSA HALL, AISTHORPE
Present: Councillors J. Cobley (Chairman), and Cllr S Bird and Mrs B. Coleman (Clerk).
Apologies – apologies were received from Cllrs. R Patterson, P Tomlinson, R Wood, C Nicholson and T
Williams.
At 7.40pm the Chairman declared the meeting inquorate and business was postponed until the next meet-
ing to be held on Thursday 5th July at 7.30pm in the BSA Hall, Aisthorpe.
INGHAM JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS
What a splendid Jubilee celebration we had in Ingham!
Thank you to the hard working committee for organising the day.
Despite the awful weather, over 100 people turned out for the 10.30am ‘open air’ service which had to be
held in the village hall. Everyone joined in the spirit of the occasion which was helped along by Church’s
resident puppets, Rosie and Eddie who were nobly assisted by Paul and Cathy.
The lunch that followed was a sell out, the hall was packed; almost standing room only. A lovely day to
remember.
The following Friday saw the hall again the centre of Village entertainment when a fashion show and
clothes sale was staged. Hilarity from start to finish with Emily and Eliza modelling clothes, Cathy, An-
drea and Jenny running back and forth collecting items for people, then a room full of scantily clad ladies
trying everything on.
Paul, Ben, John, Jeremy and Bill were on hand to serve drinks. The lighting of a candle on one’s table
summoned a gentleman so we ladies of leisure were waited on hand and foot.
By the end of the evening £392 had been raised for Church funds. Well done Cathy for organising the
evening.

Police Report: PCSO Julie McFaul noted the following: Two traffic light heads were stolen from temporary lights on Cow Hill on 17th May 2012; A male jogger on A15/ Ermine Street was reported to police for lewd behaviour on
28th May 2012; An individual reported last year to police by the Parish Council for suspicious behaviour near the
breakers yard in Ingham has now been arrested for a burglary elsewhere. There have been incidents of 4*4 catalytic
convertor theft in Scotter. PCSO McFaul noted that the police use smart water to mark catalytic convertors for vul-nerable people. The pack costs £60 for others; An individual responsible for house theft in Welton has been caught;
The Village Caretaker noted that he has been told that some children have been seen climbing the playground fence
and onto the shed roof. PCSO McFaul will increase the police car presence in the area; Councillor Duckworth re-quested that the speed indicator board be used on Lincoln Road. PCSO McFaul agreed to make arrangements for
this.
Clerk’s Report on matters outstanding: Give Way priority on Village Green – on going; Footpath outside Kal-listo’s reported with photo –there will be a complete re-surface in due course; Trees on the Village Green: The Clerk
has referred the proposed work to WLDC for approval and there should be a decision by 6/6/12; Resurface of the
Tennis Court: funding options continue to be sought; A street light out on Grange Lane requires complete replace-
ment. Highways are to revisit the site to assess the requirements; the subsiding roadside on Stow Lane – the High-ways Officer will be able to arrange repairs in the next three months; Grange Lane layby – the Highways Officer
will provide an update on progress in due course; 2 residents of houses behind the layby have applied for permis-
sion for access to new drives be cut into the verge behind the layby; Rutts on the verge of Long Lane – some curb-ing will be used to define the edge of the lane; The Clerk has also reported to Highways: fading road markings at the
junction of Saxon Way and Lincoln Road following a near miss incident caused by a car cutting the corner when
entering Saxon Way. The parking of vehicles opposite this junction should be raised with PCSO McFaul at the next
meeting; a broken give way sign at the junction of Lincoln Road and Stow Lane caused by a traffic accident. The Clerk should request that Highways reduce the height of the hedge at the junction and the grass length of the trian-
gular road island.
Village Caretaker’s Report: The Village Caretaker reported the following: The Book Exchange shelves are full and books are being stacked on the floor. Councillor Howe offered to tidy it up; The hedge around the perimeter of
the playing fields requires cutting. It was noted that hedges were not allowed to be cut until August. The Clerk was
requested to arrange for site meetings and quotes for hedge cutting so that these can be discussed at the September Parish Council meeting. Councillor Slater agreed to ask Mrs Dean about the possibility of cutting the hedge border-
ing her land and the playing field;
P3 Liaison Officers Report: The P3 Liaison Officer noted the following: A bridge on footpath 18, from Ingham to
Fillingham, has now been replaced; The cutting of footpaths has now begun; A parishioner has requested that a foot-path that runs through their garden be moved.
Items raised by Councillors for future agendas: Councillor Nicholson asked that the Parish Council consider go-
ing paperless. This will be added to the agenda of the next Parish Council meeting. County Council Issues: Councillor Kinch last attended a meeting on 8 February 2010.
District Council Issues: District Councillor Patterson noted the following: Tennis Court funding - WLDC are offer-
ing a new Community Assets Fund of £1.2m to support sport and leisure facilities. CAV fund uptake has been poor and offers a maximum of £250. Councillor Patterson will make the Scampton LIVES responder aware of this fund-
ing option; The Chairman of the new Planning Committee has pledged to ensure all Parish Councils receive paper
copies of planning applications (including agricultural planning permission); A member of the Parish Council will
be invited to attend an area community meeting, to be held on 12th July at Sturton Village Hall, to discuss local is-sues; The Challenge and Improvement Committee are discussing green bin collection and broadband speed and
availability. Surveys can be completed online; Honours will be able to be awarded such as community award, free-
dom of the district, freedom for groups and honorary alderman; Wind turbines are planned to be sited at Helmswell and Corringham – the public can still give their view. Councillor Howe noted that he expected a letter about the
need for wind farms to have been on the agenda. This will be and agenda item at the next Parish Council meeting.
The Clerk was requested to check the response date for the letter.

By way of introduction…..
Geoff and I have lived in Spridlington since 1988. Our children attended the local schools but
have long since flown the nest. Mark lives with his wife and daughter in Belfast; Emma and her partner
live and work in London. Geoff is retired and enjoys gardening, walking the dog and is a prolific reader.
I am a teacher by profession and worked for many years in schools but for the last 16 years have
been teaching adults in the area of creative textiles. Working freelance in and around the Lincoln area
with occasional trips further afield to give lectures and workshops keeps me very busy. When I am not
teaching I can be found at the design table which is basically messing about with paint and coming up
with new patterns to use in my work. I also accept commissioned work, which recently has included
church furnishings.
For a number of years I served the church as a Reader before becoming ordained and as I write
this I am preparing for my ordination as priest at the end of June. It will be a privilege to work with and
alongside you as a member of clergy. Whilst a priestly ministry is a full time ministry, my teaching work
continues.
One of the exciting things about teaching creative textiles is to be continually inspired by the
creativity shown by students; they often come to class with the notion that they don’t have an ounce of
creativity in them and then go on to produce the most wonderful work! We are all creative, but some-
times it takes something or someone to unlock the creativity that is within us.
During this time of change it is an opportunity for us to be creative, to share the gifts God has
given us.
The work to find a successor is already under way and whilst at the moment we are without a
parish priest there is a large team of people working together to ensure the smooth running of our par-
ishes during this time of change.
Quite how things will change I have no idea. I am not into forecasting the future but I do think
change is good for us. It concentrates the mind and by working together, supporting one another and be-
ing there for one another we can move forward and face any changes and challenges creatively and with
confidence.

The Brattleby News July 2012
I think many of us are beginning to wonder if it’s going to be one of those years where we have
little or no summer. By the time you read this, the summer equinox - 21st of June - will have passed and
the days will begin to shorten by around a couple of minutes each day; quite a depressing thought. Person-
ally, I feel quite cheated when we have one winter followed by another, without at least a few months of
glorious English summer between them.
The weather was also an issue during the Diamond Jubilee weekend. Fortunately, the Parish Coun-
cil managed to obtain a grant for a marquee, without which, the day would have been a ‘washout’. How-
ever, approximately 40 residents attended with all manner of foods and beverages; the consensus of opin-
ion being, under the circumstances, everyone had a good time, albeit cold and totally under canvas!
The twice yearly village Risk Assessment was carried out on 17th of May by three members of the
Parish Council. No new issues were found to have arisen. A copy of the assessment is available to all resi-
dents via a member of the P/C.
As the majority of residents will be aware, the ‘grass cutting’ within the village has not been satis-
factory this year. This work is carried out by Highways, who, through a long-standing agreement, should
provide seven cuts per year to amenity standards.
Several approaches have been made by the Parish Council to Highways by letter and phone. Currently, we
await a positive response.
With regard to the cutting of the Village Paddock, this is done by a private contractor and funded
from the Parish Council precept.
The future of the Brattleby, Scampton and Aisthorpe (BSA) Village Hall was discussed at some
length during the recent AGM. This, and other issues regarding the hall, will be on the agenda of the next
Brattleby P/C meeting – unfortunately, prior to this issue of the Village Venture going to press. If by some
remote chance, any resident requires further information on this matter, please contact the BSA Village
Hall Committee, or the author.
The final English Heritage contracts for the St Cuthbert’s church restoration project have now been
signed and subject to a Faculty for the work being approved by the church authorities, work on the
£155,000 scheme is expected to commence towards the end of July.
As you will no doubt be aware, Cannon Peter Godden is to retire in July. Peter, who has been
Priest in Charge of ‘The Springline’ group of churches for a number of years, is to relocate to Scarbor-
ough, where he intends to find more time to pursue his love of music.

ground mounted array of photovoltaic panels). A concensus of the Parish Council agreed that no comment should be made to WLDC. Risk Assessment report: Councillor Slater presented the Wicksteed annual risk assessment report for the field play
area. It was noted that the large goal posts cross bars are rattling when pressure is applied. Councillor Slater will discuss a resolution with Mr Wensley. The Clerk was asked to contact Wicksteed for a price to add a cross rail on
the access to the slide on the large multiplay equipment, obtain quotes for painting the multiplay equipment and to
discuss movement of the small goal posts in their sleeves with Wicksteed. Councillor Slater noted that there was some minor damage to the fence surrounding the play area perhaps caused by a car. This will be monitored. It was
also noted that the bonfire site has a number of depressions that require filling to prevent tripping. Councillor
Duckworth offered topsoil to fill these.
Flooding & Highways Issues: Councillor Duckworth noted that thank you letters have been sent to all involved with the flood relief scheme and drainage at the pond site. A letter from Anglian Water in response to concerns
raised by Councillor Howe and Councillor Duckworth about the overflow of sewage from the pump station was dis-
cussed. Councillor Howe highlighted concern over consented emergency overflow referred to in the letter. Coun-cillor Duckworth was concerned that surface water from West End to the Lincoln Road end of the High Street was
flowing into the foul sewer and causing the pump station overflow to be triggered. Councillor Duckworth had
drafted a response letter highlighting these concerns and read this to the Council. Councillor Howe noted he would like this to include questions of who gave consented emergency overflow, when it was given and whether it can be
revoked. District Councillor Patterson supported these comments, particularly due to the proximity of the pump
station to the school and requested that the letter acknowledge this. Councillor Duckworth noted that a pot hole on
Long Lane near the caravan site needed filling. The Clerk will report this to Highways. The Avenue – unadopted road: A letter received from a parishioner requesting legal advice was discussed. It was
agreed that the Parish Council were not able to provide legal advice. The Clerk will respond to the parishioner to
this effect and will suggest contacting LCC Highways for assistance. Ingham Parish Council Website: There was no discussion with respect to this item.

Here at Lincoln City Radio we have recently celebrated our second birthday. Broadcasting on 103.6 FM,
we are a community radio station serving the city of Lincoln and the surrounding area.
In many respects the station operates like any other local radio station. We are licensed and regulated by
OFCOM. From our studio in Outer Circle Road, Lincoln we broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,
with live programmes between 8 am and midnight. We have music, local weather and travel updates and
interviews with studio guests featuring topics of local interest.
What sets us apart from the mainstream radio stations is that Lincoln City Radio is run entirely by volun-
teers: all the presenters and those working “behind the scenes” give their time totally without return other
than the satisfaction they get from contributing to their local community.
Former Ingham resident Tony Wilkins is a regular presenter on the Lincoln Morning programme. Tony
says, “Lincoln City Radio is more than just a music station. We help local community groups promote
their activities and provide valuable training and work experience for local people. Working at the station
is very rewarding.”
The essence of community radio is local participation. The team at Lincoln City Radio is made up of peo-
ple of all ages and backgrounds. Some come with previous broadcasting experience but most do not.
Training is given in all aspects of the work of the radio station. Experience gained at Lincoln City Radio
has helped a number of our volunteers gain employment. Recently we were delighted that Rosie Duffield,
one of our regular presenters landed a job with Lincs FM.
Although we are a commercial radio station, we are a not for profit organisation. We are permitted to
raise 50% of our income from advertising: the other 50% has to come from grants, fundraising and dona-
tions, so finance is always a challenge.
So how does Lincoln City Radio fit in with the other radio stations serving the Lincoln area? Each station
has a different remit which is set by OFCOM, the broadcasting regulator. This includes the station’s tar-
get audience, whether its output is mainly speech or music and surprisingly, the type of music the station
may play.
We are more localised than the mainstream local radio stations: we focus on “the city rather than the
county or the region”. We aim to support local community groups and businesses who might otherwise
struggle to get media coverage. We publicise local events through our regular “community notice board”
announcements.
Lincoln City Radio’s designated target audience is the over 50s in Lincoln and the surrounding area. The
music we play has to be predominantly easy listening music from 1930 to 1980 with some specialist pro-
grammes featuring jazz, blues and folk.
We don’t play the current hit charts, but we do have a playlist of nearly 30,000 tracks so if you like the
popular hits of yesteryear tune in to 103.6 FM and give us a try.

A piece of history and a plea for help
The following is the text of a letter which has been passed on to my by Scampton Parish Council to whom
it was originally addressed.
I repeat it full as part of it is expressed in the words of the gentleman concerned himself and because it
gives an interesting insight into wartime Scampton and the stories of several airmen.
I hope you will find it interesting and maybe someone can help with the search which prompted the con-
tact. [Editor]
The text is as follows:
“I would be very grateful if you could help me in identifying the farm or family that my great un-
cle was billeted with when he was stationed at Scampton in 1941.
Shortly before he died in 1991 my great uncle told me a great deal about his time in the RAF (see
comments below in italics) but sadly I cannot ask him any more questions but I hope that someone locally
may be able to identify the farm or family.
Pilot Officer Anthony Leslie Parsons (Tony) was posted to 83 Squadron at Scampton on 25th July
1941. He was a pilot flying Hampdens. He was billeted on a local farm along with his best friend Pilot Of-
ficer Stanley Hartley (Stan) and Pilot Officer James Dugald Gould (Duggie). All three men were pilots,
though initially they flew as Navigators which was the policy at that time.
And finally in August ’41 I was moved to, or transferred to Scampton. Having arrived there, I and two
others that had come from Upper Heyford with me were billeted at a farm house about 2 ½ miles outside
Scampton Aerodrome, way out in the country, there was only a track across the field to the farmhouse. A
very pleasant couple ran it. It was mostly arable, but the farmer’s wife did keep some chickens, and they
looked after us like sons. Stan Hartley and myself shared a big bedroom, and the other chap, Gould, he
had a room across the way. And they looked after us very well indeed. And they were supposed to provide
us with just a cup of tea in the evening, but in actual fact we often had a jolly good farm house breakfast
with them. And many times in the evening when we got in they would sit and talk around their nice coal
fire and would then give us the odd noggin which was very very jovial of them and very very pleasant in-
deed.
It was a farm out in the country, about two miles from Scampton, and it was a Georgian
building, a full square job with two reception rooms and four bedrooms. Very comfortable. I should think
he was a well to do farmer. The approach was across a field by a track, not a road. And the farmer’s wife
kept chickens. She had about 100 to 150 penned in on this field over which the access to the house was
obtained, which brings a story to mind.
He was very concerned that, or she was very concerned that foxes were getting her chick-
ens at night, or a fox, she didn’t know. So as we were looked after almost like a family, their family, Stan
and I, and another chap called Doug Gould were billeted there. Doug Gould unfortunately was Missing
Believed Killed (19th August 1941), so it was just Stan and I for a time before we were moved.
And one night the farmer said “Would Stan and I help to get this fox because again it had
been at the chickens and killed two or three.”
So we said “Yes, we’d be delighted.”
And it was a moonlit night and he lent us shotguns and we went, there were three of us,
around the perimeter of the field and sat down or squatted near the hedges on opposite sides of the field
waiting for the fox to appear. We’d taken something to keep ourselves warm, but the dawn arrived and no
foxes. In fact looking back on it, it was just as well one didn’t because we’d have a very good chance of, if
we shot at the fox, of hitting our friend across the other side of the field. But nevertheless we didn’t see the
fox and we didn’t hear any more about him pinching chickens.

Because shortly after that we were brought back into Scampton married quarters and lived there instead
of at the farm. I went back once or twice to see the farmers, the farmer and his wife, but then of course I
was shot down and I didn’t see them.
My diary also reminded me of Doug Gould who shared the farmhouse accommodation with me.
The story goes that he went off on an operational flight as Second Pilot / Navigator (19th August 1941,
target; Gardening, Borkum Island), he wasn’t flying the machine, and the target was somewhere in North
Germany. And from the report of his, the First Pilot, when he landed the plane back at Scampton, he re-
ported that his Navigator was missing, and that the escape hatch in the floor of the navigator’s compart-
ment was open. Because it opened inwards, and having opened it one couldn’t shut it from, well from the
outside. And it would appear that going over the North Sea, before they reached land they were attacked
by a night fighter, and the pilot took evasive action, and when he, the night fighter had gone away, or dis-
engaged, the pilot noticed that there was a great draught coming up from the front of the aircraft. And
when the escape hatch is open, well the navigator’s, behind the navigator’s seat in the nose of the aircraft,
obviously the wind is going to flow through the aircraft and up round the pilot’s seat. And then he knew
that his Navigator, Doug Gould, had taken flight as it were, he’d got out of the hatch and his parachute
was missing when they examined the aircraft afterwards. So whether he thought the pilot said bale out or
not, we don’t know, and we never shall know because he was never picked up alive.
Doug Gould Pilot Officer James Dugald Gould RAFVR (2nd Pilot / Navigator) 87061, age 29 was
lost in Hampden AE319 of 83 Squadron which took off on 19th August 1941 from RAF Scampton to
bomb Kiel. He baled out near the target area and is buried in Kiel War Cemetery.
And the other, my other colleague, Stan Hartley, he was a brave little chap, on the last, his last mission
(5th November 1941, target; Gardening, Forget me not), before his last mission we were in the locker room
getting togged up and discussing the flight path, flight plan rather. And he said he was going the shorter
route which took him over an island called Borkum which we knew was heavily defended, but he said no
that was the quickest way to get in and out and he wasn’t going to bother about going round as we had
been advised to do. And he was carrying a 2,000lb acoustic mine, and so off we set and our departure
times were about two minutes apart at most, so we were airborne at roughly the same time, and we fol-
lowed roughly the same course across the North Sea. And his course was north as mine, and as we were
approaching the enemy coast there was a very large flash of light in the sky about ten miles north of
where I was flying, my course. And I thought “Some poor devil’s got it! I hope it’s not Stan.” Well Stan
didn’t return from that flight so it must have been Stan and he must have hit the flack over the island of
Borkum.
Stan Hartley
P/O Hartley Pilot Officer Stanley Hartley RAFVR age 27 (Pilot) 87064, was lost in Hampden
AD850 (OL-L) of 83 Squadron which took off at 01.05hrs on 6th November 1941 from RAF Scampton to
lay mines in Kiel Bay. Both on the way to the target and back the aircraft passed over Esbjerg. They were
shot down by flak on 6th November 1941 South East of Mano Island, by machine gun fire from the search-
light position at Skallingen Ende, and from Boat 5 from Hafenschützflotille Esbjerg. It is likely that “Boat
5” was JE05 (Jutland Esbjerg 05), a former Danish fishing vessel "P. Schou" (FN 109) launched in 1891
and armed with either 2,0 cm or 3,7 cm heavy machine guns. This vessel later became Vs1601 of 16 Si-
cherungsflottille. [Continued on page 38]

tille. All the crew of the Hampden were lost. The wreckage was found on the south west coast of Jutland
in the Wadden Sea southeast of Mandø between Hviding and Rejsby. Pilot Officer Stanley Hartley
RAFVR age 27 (Pilot) 87064, was found on Søndernæs Beach. Flight Sergeant Anthony Edward Ward
RAFVR age 21 (2nd Pilot) 902192, was found near Mandø and was taken to the chapel at Mandø church
by the receiver of wrecks Hans H. Jørgensen from Mandø. From there he was transferred to Gravlunden
cemetery in Esbjerg. Flight Sergeant Ronald Bertram Turner RAFVR age 26 (W.Op./Air Gnr.) 905119
was found near Hviding. They were brought to Gravlunden cemetery where they were all laid to rest on
14th November 1941. Sergeant Norman Ivor Cotterell RAFVR age 21 (W.Op./Air Gnr.) 1162559, was
found on the shore near Rejsby and laid to rest in Gravlunden on 22nd November 1941. The cemetery is
now known as Esbjerg Fourfelt Cemetery, Denmark.
P/O Parsons Pilot Officer Anthony Leslie Parsons (Pilot) 87063 was shot down in Hampden AE
191 (OL-Z) of 83 Squadron which took off at 02.13hrs on 8th December 1941 from RAF Scampton to
bomb Aachen. It was hit by anti aircraft fire from the Veere Battery on the Dutch island of Walcheren at
05.44hrs and ditched at 06.08hrs at position 51 32N 01 30E, 9 miles NNE of Margate. Sergeant Bernard
Athelstan Basevi RAFVR (Observer) 923222 died on 10th December 1941, Pilot Officer Derek Jacobs
RAF (W.Op./Air Gnr.) 112160 died on 11th December 1941. They were both buried at sea and are listed
on the Runnymede Memorial. Sergeant George Wiscombe RAFVR (Air Gnr.) 922733 became a POW
(No 24785) and was interned in Camps 8B/L3. Pilot Officer Parsons became a POW (No 39646) and was
interned in Camps 9C/L3.
Tony Parsons
I do not have the date when Tony and Stan moved into the married quarters at RAF Scampton, but they
must have lived in the farmhouse in August 1941, possibly September or even October. Stan Hartley was
killed in early November. I hope that Tony’s description of the farmhouse may be familiar to someone.
Certainly his professional career as an architect made him able to describe buildings well. I do realise that
the farmhouse may be two and a half miles in any direction from the airfield but local knowledge is proba-
bly the only way to identify these things.
If any of your local contacts through the Parish Council, Church Magazine or even the primary school
are able to help identify the farm or the family I would be most grateful. I have been researching Tony’s
RAF career for over twenty five years and would love to be able to add a photograph of the farmhouse and
the name of the family to my research. The farmer and his wife clearly made three men very comfortable
in what would have been very frightening times. Tony remembered them fifty years after the events
shown above, so their care clearly had a lasting effect on him. Any help you are able to give would be
wonderful.
