Welcome to the October issue of Village View magazine. As we look forward to autumn we must surely also look back on an amazing summer both locally and nationally.

The Queens Jubilee celebrations were enjoyed by thousands across the country and the Olympics and Paralympics were a triumph of organisation. I was lucky enough to attend several paralympic events, including the opening ceremony, and they were simply inspirational. I hope we will all welcome in a new season with renewed enthusiasm for both work and play and we have plenty to offer in Village View. We have many local businesses just waiting to help with house projects, garden plans, or personal development, and we have an extensive range of organisations in our community section to fill your leisure hours – something for everyone! If you know of a business or local group who would benefit from inclusion in Village View then please pass this magazine to them.

RecipeAutumn Pudding

Try this variation on summer pudding making the most of

the early Autumn fruits, such as plums, blackberries and delicious English apples. Serve with softly whipped double cream flavoured with a splash of Calvados for a really indulgent dessert.

Serves 6Ready in 1 hour (plus overnight chilling)

Ingredients175g caster sugar3 small English eating apples, peeled, cored and sliced4 red plums, halved, stones removed and sliced100g raspberries100g strawberries, hulled and sliced100g blackcurrants or blueberries100g blackberries10 slices thick-sliced white breadExtra fruit, to decorate

Method1 Place the sugar and 200ml of cold water in a large pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Add the sliced apples and simmer for 5-10 minutes until just tender. Add the rest of the fruit and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool.

2 Remove the crusts from the bread slices. Use a round cookie cutter to stamp out a circle from one slice of bread to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the remaining slices of bread in half.

3 Carefully strain half of the fruit syrup from the cooled fruit into a shallow dish. Lightly dip most of the slices of bread into the syrup and arrange around the side of the pudding basin, overlapping them slightly to completely line the basin. Dip the bread circle into the syrup and press into the bottom of the basin.

4 Spoon the fruit into the lined basin, pressing down gently with the back of a spoon. Use the remaining slices of bread to cover the fruit filling completely and spoon over any remaining syrup.

5 Place a saucer on top of the basin and weigh it down with 2-3 food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. To serve, carefully turn the pudding out onto a plate and decorate with extra sliced fruit.

bringing it into the correct alignment. It helps toreshape your body, which will become longer

and leaner and more toned. It will also improve your posture, achieving the perfect

balance between strength and flexibility and it is agreat way to reduce stress or unwanted tension. Perfectfor athletes looking to enhance their performance and

Dog of the MonthDixie

Hi, my name is Dixie, and I’m a 1 year old Terrier.

I’m a lovely girl who will be fun and good company to have around. I’m very playful, and enjoy having a good sniff as well as playing with my toys. I walk nicely on the lead and will be a lovely companion. I may or may not get on with other dogs and cats, and would suit a home with children aged 5 and over.

If you are interested in offering me, or any other dog, a loving home please visit

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm, or give them a call on 01494 482695. It would be great to see you!

Join Our Volunteer TeamAt the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway

The Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway is operated, maintained and

managed exclusively by volunteers, and every penny from fares and sales is ploughed back. Its future depends totally on its volunteers. Could you be one of the team?

Vacancies !!We need more people in all departments, to help look after the railway and to contribute to its projects, whether you can come along regularly or just once in a while.

So, whatever your abilities or skills, we have a place for you in our teams that tackle the various jobs needed to keep things running. And, if you are not sure what you might like to do, we are only too happy to entertain you to time at the railway, meeting the people running the various departments, so you can see first hand the vast range of possibilities open to you !! Some areas require more training than others, but all are open to volunteers, from those who like meeting and dealing with the public, to those who gain more satisfaction from being behind the scenes. Full training is offered to help gain skills in Railway operation, even steam engine driving !

There are three main areas, in all of which we would welcome more help:

Passenger ServicesRailway operations need people to look after our passengers: these include station staff, and train stewards travelling on the trains. If you enjoy meeting the public, this could be for you.

Other areas in Passenger Services include catering; railways run on tea for both passengers, and, in particular at Chinnor, the volunteers !! We need people to run the Cambrian Buffet on the platform, and help with our special events. Finally, there is the shop which sells a range of goods and books.

Operations & Engineering DepartmentsOperations represents a high profile activity to our visitors, as it provides all train drivers, firemen, guards, and signalmen needed to make the trains run.

Engineering keeps the “hardware” going – coaches, wagons, signals, permanent way, locomotives and mechanical equipment. Again, training can be given to enable you to join a team. Finally there is what has become known as the “Tuesday” gang – a group that gets together every Tuesday for general maintenance. This includes the platforms, buildings, public areas, painting, hedge trimming – anything that keeps the Railway clean and tidy for our visitors.

How do I volunteer? If you think you may be interested, or would like to come and see what is involved, please talk the possibilities over by contacting Dave Maxey, on either 07718 003132 or [email protected] . We are all friendly, but would welcome some help !!

Hamlet HistoriansWater, Water Everywhere?

Although this wet summer is making us all

miserable, spare a thought for the inhabitants of Stokenchurch in the days before fresh clean water was available to everyone at the turn of a tap.

In 1842 , the Stokenchurch Tithe Map showed several ponds near cottages, public houses and farms, most situated on the common which was larger than today. In 1861, the commons were reduced in size and during this process, five ponds for public use were “appointed”, although others also existed. Ponds were used for domestic water, for animals and steam traction engines used by furniture factories and farmers. Some larger houses had underground water cisterns by this time but many people had to manage with pond water and maybe a barrel catching rainwater from their roofs.

In 1870, discussions by the Vestry (the predecessors of the parish council), on the provision of a good water supply for the parish eventually resulted in a well being constructed on the common near the

present day pharmacy, which was funded by Colonel Fane and Mr Brown, Lord of the Manor. Mr Brown was also asked to stop geese fouling the water in the pond on the recreation ground! The well was dug by hand and when the water table was reached at a depth of 360 feet, the water gushed in so fast that the work men had to leave their tools and escape up the ladders. A well house was built with horse winding gear giving good access to water. By 1875, the horse gear was too expensive to maintain, so water was raised by hand until 1923, when a water tower was built with a header tank for five stand-pipes in the centre of the village. As late as 1910, a report by the local doctor described the diseases rife in Stokenchurch due to people drinking unfiltered and unboiled water from ponds.

Surface water and hill-top wells are not always reliable and in dry summers, particularly the exceptional drought of 1921, water had to be brought to the village from wells below the springline at Lewknor, the Wormsley estate or the well in Bottom Wood at Beacons Bottom.

After 1934, mains water gradually arrived and the ponds fell into disuse and were filled in by the Parish Council in the 1950s. One, the Swilly Pond, is marked by a plaque on the wall of the offices next to the Health Centre.Photograph from SWOP http://www.buckscc.gov.uk/bcc/swop/ea_SWOP_1.page

monthlyFOCUSChildren’s Book Week

monthly focus

October is the month that the joy of Children’s literature is celebrated, encouraging the reading for pleasure via activities such as book swaps, library visits, sponsored reads and reading challenges. Setting aside special time for reading related activities can stimulate a childs interest in books, and assist in their own creative writing.

Children’s Book Week is always held during the first full week of October in schools, libraries and other venues across the United Kingdom. Booktrust, an independent reading and writing charity, makes available a wide range of resources to teachers and librarians to plan their own celebrations of reading for pleasure.

Even for the younger child, whose reading may be very much at the learning stage, there are many, many wonderful books packed with beautiful illustrations that almost leap off the page. Encouraging children to tell the story from pictures helps broaden their mind and ability to have fun with words. Don’t miss out on such simple fun - dig out some books and spend some quality time doing an age-old pleasure.

GardeningEnjoy Some Tulip Mania

Tulips are amazingly good value and have the potential to transform your flower beds and

tubs next spring with their silken-petalled, strikingly coloured blooms.

Late PlantingTulip bulbs are best planted from the last half of October and well in to November. Plant too early and the bulbs will be far more prone to damage by the fungal ‘tulip fire’ disease which wrecks the leaves and flowers.

Gritty BedIf your garden soil is inclined to be clay and rather heavy, tulips may suffer and are certainly less likely to come back after their first wet winter. A heavy loam works well but anything that isn’t well drained may cause problems. You can solve this to a good extent by digging an extra large planting hole and putting an inch or two of horticultural gravel or grit in the base of the hole before planting the bulb. Don’t use grit or gravel left over from the local building site, as this often contains salts and other contaminants which may harm or kill garden plants.

Contained ColourTulips make great plants for containers such as window boxes, tubs and decent-sized pots and planters. Shorter varieties generally look best (check the front of the pack or catalogue for heights). Good drainage is essential so make sure that there are plenty of crocks in the base of the container and that it’s well supplied with drainage holes. Try either a loam-free multi-purpose compost or mix 50:50 a loam-based compost and a bit of added grit.

Fantastic FoliageMany tulips also have good looking foliage which can help to bring colour and texture to your pots and beds. Try the Kaufmanniana types such as ‘Johann Strauss’(dark red flowers with yellow edges and mottled leaves), or even better the Greigii type tulips which all have maroon patterning on the leaves, such as ‘Red Riding Hood’ (richest red with black).

Tulip PartnersRichest red tulips surrounded by a mist of pale blue forget-me-nots are dreamily pretty. This wonderful combination is easy to achieve; you can sow the forget-me-not seed now, as you plant the bulbs, or

if you prefer sow them early in the year, just before the bulbs emerge. The display you achieve will be breathtakingly beautiful.

Long-lived LoveliesIn most gardens tulips are not the longest living bulbs, however you can always try growing the so-called species tulips such as Tulipa sprengeri or Tulipa turkestanica. They have smaller, less-showy flowers and will be considerably more expensive initially but they look gorgeous, tend to last longer and, better still, also spread extensively in the right spot. After a few years a carpet of species tulips can be achieved, and will take your breath away.

Good CompanionsTulips look great with each other. Try combining the richly purple-black leaved Pittosporum ‘Tom Thumb’ with any purple tulip such as ‘Passionale’, or for a wackier effect chose one of the frilly petalled parrot-tulips with green streaks on their petals, or the green ‘spring green’ tulip, combined with any low-growing shrub.

Now is the best time of year to think tulips - start planting and transform your garden for spring.
