Cumberland County Historical Society Trustee, Dr. Charles Valentine, will enlighten audience
members in Cumberland County Historical Society’s history and mission. Please join Dr.
Valentine for this discussion on Monday, April 23, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., where you will learn
about the Cumberland County museums maintained by the Society and the various special events
that the Society offers during the year.
In 1905, at the same time plans were being made to erect a monument to commemorate the Tea
Burning in Greenwich, the Cumberland County Historical Society was organized as a non-profit
corporation. The first recorded meeting was held in the old Cumberland County Court House on
Broad Street in Bridgeton at 2 PM on December 2, 1908. Today, the Society is very active in
promoting knowledge concerning the history of Cumberland County and has much to offer its
members.
This free program is funded by the Friends of Vineland Public Library.

“A Celebration of Women” Exhibit by the Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society, is available to
view from April 1-30, 2018.
In 2018, the Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society will be
holding “A Celebration of Women,” honoring the 150th anniver-
sary of the women’s suffrage protest held in Vineland in 1868.
That protest, which involved 172 Vineland women, was the larg-
est demonstration of its type ever staged in America and effec-
tively rekindled national interest in women gaining the right to
vote.
The exhibit will include a variety of items related to the event,
as well as material on other significant Vineland women ranging
from the mid-19th century through present day. In addition to photographs and text panels, the exhibit
will include reproduction letters, personal items, and other material that will help visitors better under-
stand women’s lives.
The Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society, founded in 1868, is the oldest local historical society
in New Jersey, headquartered in the oldest purpose-built museum in the state. It is listed on the New
Jersey Women’s Heritage Trail because it owns records and other documentation related to the New
Jersey Suffrage Association, which was founded in Vineland around 1864. Many nationally-known
speakers appeared in Vineland to support women’s suffrage, including Victoria Woodhull, Elizabeth
Cady Stanton and Lucy Stone.

Beatrice’s Book Review Hello, Readers:
I have 2 reviews from my 2018 Vineland Library reading challenge! I’ve read a book
published in 2018 and also a graphic novel. I do admit that I cheated on the 2018 published
book by choosing my own since our librarians left that one blank. I chose a historical romance
which as you all know by now are my favorite. I snuggled up with a cup of tea and Lisa Kleypas’
Hello Stranger. It’s book #4 of the Ravenels series. Dr. Garret Gibson, who we met in previous
books, finds her match. He’s daring, dangerous, handsome and just as stubborn as she is. It was
fun to watch him take her on. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this light fun book.
I also read Barry Deutch’s graphic novel Hereville. I never thought much about grabbing a
graphic novel to read. I thought they were more like the comics of my time. They are but with
much more depth in characters and plot. Think of them as a novel told through illustration as
well as words. The story in Hereville centers around an 11-year-old Orthodox Jewish girl who
wants to kill dragons. She ends up in trouble most of the time which is the story. I’m not sure
she’ll ever see a dragon but she learns quite a bit on her quest. I only read the first volume,
Hereville: How Mirka Got Her Sword, but I can see her being in trouble quite a bit as she grows.
I may read the next one just to see what trouble she gets into next. I may also look through our
graphic novel section or on Hoopla to check out more. I was told even Stephen King has graphic
novels. They’re probably a sight to see!
Happy Reading!
Beatrice
