We develop and operate photovoltaic and concentrated solar energy plants.

These plants are based on the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP).

Concentrated solar power systems use lenses, mirrors, and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam.

Photovoltaics converts light into electric current using the photoelectric effect.

SOLAR POWER PLANTS

We develop and operate wind power plants in areas to replace or supplement the existing power grid.

Wind power, as an alternative to burning fossil fuels, is plentiful, renewable, widely distributed, clean, produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation, consumes no water, and uses little land.

The net effects on the environment are far less problematic than those of nonrenewable power sources.

Wind power gives variable power which is very consistent from year to year but which has significant variation over shorter time scales. It is therefore used in conjunction with other electric power sources to give a reliable supply.

WIND POWER PLANTS

OUR OFFERINGSouth and Southern Africa is fortunate in that, over and above its rich coal resources, it is also well endowed with non-depletable resources, notably solar and wind. The country has an average of more than 2,500 hours of sunshine per year and average direct solar radiation levels range between 4.5 and 6.5kWh/m2 per day, placing it in the top-3 in the world. South and Southern Africa’s renewable energy sector has been benefitting from one of the most successful subsidy programmes in the world. The subsidies provided by the governments of the US, EU and Japan (collectively referred to as ‘the leaders’) lowered the cost of renewable energy to the point where they are most competitive with other forms of energy.

SOUTH AND SOUTHERN AFRICAN POTENTIAL

The combined heat and power systems of a these plants enable economical and efficient electrical power generation.

The benefits of Cogeneration include significant reduction in carbon emissions and energy costs. And while typical combustion systems have an efficiency of about 40-50 percent, cogeneration systems that combine the power and heat generation processes can be up to 80 percent efficient.

In addition to reducing carbon emissions and contributing to sustainability goals, cogeneration offers many other benefits, including:

• Enhancing operational efficiency to lower overhead costs

• Reducing energy waste, thereby increasing energy efficiency

• Offering greater energy independence by moving a portion of the load off the grid

• Allowing companies to replace aging infrastructure

When combined with a renewable fuel supply, such as biomass or biogas, cogeneration is an environmentally responsible source of reliable, base load generation.

CO-GENERATION PLANTS

We develop and install solar roof panel projects for large commercial and industrial applications.

A photovoltaic (PV) system consists of one or more photovoltaic (PV) modules. One PV-module consists of about 36-72 photovoltaic solar cells. The cells convert the light into electricity. The PV modules are connected in a series called an array. Because PV Arrays are built with individual, linked PV modules, photovoltaic systems are exceptionally modular, which provides for easy transportation and rapid installation, and enables easy expansion if power requirements increase.

PV systems that are grid-connected or “grid-tied” applications need an inverter or power conditioner to convert the direct current (DC), generated by the PV-modules, into alternating current (AC).

The advantages of such a system are:• Renewable Energy Source• Reduces Electricity Bills• Diverse Applications • Low Maintenance Costs• Technology Development

SOLAR ROOF PANEL PROJECTS

This has translated into a massive benefit for successive users of renewable energy, including South and Southern Africa. Direct Normal Irradiation (DNI) and Global Horizontal Irradiation (GHI). The DNI map is used by developers of CSP (concentrating solar power) thermal power stations as well as CPV (concentrating photovoltaic) power stations to evaluate the available resource in an area for their technology. The highest DNI predicted in South Africa is now 3 200 kWh/m2 per annum in the Northern Cape.

PROJECTSVintage Energy has been involved in a number of renewable energy projects within South Africa. These are listed below.

• Solar farm – Northern Cape• Wind farm – Free State• Solar farm – Limpopo• Solar farms in Africa

Vintage Energy negotiates with landowners regarding suitability of land for solar farm projects. Feasibility studies are carried out and the following criteria are used:

• Road accessibility to farm - must be a well maintained road• Water availability• Geographical topography - the flatter the better• Access to main transmission lines• Solar radiation levels

With the constant development of newer and better technologies in the renewables space we are able to test the boundaries of where we can incorporate renewables into our every day lives. Whilst people within South and Southern Africa may not be ready to rely 100% on renewables, we are moving towards a more balanced future where solar, wind and hydro play a more central role.

Research and development into renewable energy is an ever evolving happening and we will ensure that we constantly explore new avenues.
