Youth Suicide is now the number one cause of death for youth in Oregon and the second cause of death for youth in the U.S. Our youth volunteers receive over 60 hours of mental health training to address issues like bullying and suicide ideation and to break the stigma around mental health for a new generation.

Our crisis line teams are there for individuals who can’t attend their AA meeting or see their therapist and for those who are experiencing anxiety in their isolation because of the events in the world.

Last year, Lines for Life took over 128,000 crisis calls. That’s a crisis call every 4 minutes. And the numbers are rising every day in 2020.

These are uncertain economic times and we understand it is not a small thing to ask you to raise your paddle to support our mission tonight! Please consider joining as we raise our paddles to help provide hope to vulnerable individuals who need us most during this critical moment in history.

Welcome to our first ever Virtual Always Hope Gala!

Thank you for joining us this evening to honor and celebrate the work our crisis line and prevention teams do 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

During these uncertain days and months, the staff at Lines for Life has not missed a beat. A week before Oregon Governor Kate Brown’s, Shelter in Place Order, 50% of our team transitioned safely to home offices and stepped into the mental health gap at a crucial time during this global pandemic.

We even took on additional work from the Veterans’ Crisis Line and from our hospital partners across the state of Oregon, effectively becoming the front line of the current and continued mental health crisis in the U.S. During the last two weeks we’ve expanded our Senior Loneliness line to reach older Oregonians statewide with a compassionate, helpful voice to help navigate the isolation of the pandemic.

As of today, almost 100% of our staff at Lines for Life is working full-time at home to meet the needs of individuals suffering from substance abuse and mental health issues and tremendous anxiety due to current events.

Our YouthLine volunteers continue to take calls and texts at the Lines for Life head-quarters, under the supervision of master’s level clinicians. (Their call stations 10 feet apart.) We’ve worked carefully with them

CHINA FORBES was born and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts where she graduated cum laude from Harvard and was awarded the Jonathan Levy Prize for “most promising actor”. She earned her Equity card appearing in New York regional theatre and off-Broadway productions, while fronting her NYC rock band. Her first album “Love Handle” was released in 1995 and she was chosen to sing “Ordinary Girl,” the theme song to the TV show Clueless.

It was that same year Harvard classmate Thomas Lauderdale invited her to sing with Pink Martini, and she has since written many of the band’s most beloved songs with Lauderdale, including “Sympathique,” “Lilly,” “Clementine,” “Let’s Never Stop Falling in Love,” and “Over the Valley” to name a few. China’s original song “Hey Eugene” is the title track of Pink Martini’s third album and many of her songs can also be heard on television and film. She sang “Qué Será Será” over the credits of Jane Campion’s film “In the Cut” and her original song “The Northern Line” appears at the end of sister Maya Forbes’ directorial debut “Infinitely Polar Bear” (Sony Pictures Classics). Both films star Mark Ruffalo by coincidence.

With Pink Martini, China has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Later with Jools Holland. She has performed songs in over 20 languages and has sung duets with Rufus Wainwright, Michael Feinstein, Carol Channing and many other wonderful artists. She has performed in venues from Carnegie Hall to Red Rocks, the Hollywood Bowl to Paris’s l’Olympia and Sydney Opera House. Her second solo album “’78” came out on Heinz Records in 2008, a collection of autobiographical folk-rock songs.

China is currently at work on her third solo album of original material, as well as preparing her first concert with symphony orchestra. Originally scheduled for May 2, 2020, this concert with the Oregon Symphony has been postponed to November 18, 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
