PATRICIA CANO launches her first album

« This Is the New World »

With a voice smooth, intense and a little sweet, Patricia Cano is an artist mature beyond her years, and incredible to behold.

Her highly anticipated debut album THIS IS THE NEW WORLD is influenced by traditional South American folk forms, including Samba and Afro-Peruvian rhythms, and driven by the groove of Jazz, the soul of Folk and Blues.

“This is the New World” was launched on November 6th, 2009 in Sudbury, ON. For the sold-out Toronto launch on Wednesday, November 11th at The Lula Lounge, Patricia was accompanied by a most exceptional group of musicians that included:

The artist Patricia Cano was born in Sudbury, where she began her career on stage as a young dancer, and later, as a community theatre player. After studies in Theater and Spanish Literature at the University of Toronto, she embraced the career of traveling artist, first with Tomson Highway, the Cree writer and composer, then with le Théâtre du Soleil. In 2001, Patricia performed the lead role of Emily Dictionary in Highway’s play Rose, followed by the title role in his play The Incredible Adventures of Mary-Jane Mosquito, commissioned by the Stratford Music Festival. Since then, the two have traveled the world together performing Tomson Highway’s songs and stories in cabaret form! In August 2009, they premiered a brand new Cree cabaret entitled “KISAGEETIN”, written and composed by Tomson Highway, and performed for the first time in Sudbury, ON at Le Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario.

The second collaboration of great importance for Patricia’s artistic career is that which began in January 2003, when she joined the Parisian-based theatre company, Le Théâtre du Soleil, under the direction of renown theatre director, Ariane Mnouchkine. Patricia worked four years with the company, first on the music stage under the direction of the legendary Jean-Jacques Lemêtre, and later as ‘comédienne’ and finally as a singer. Madame Mnouchkine sent Patricia to Seoul, South Korea in 2005 to study traditional Korean singing with a voice master, and this experience, along with a growing desire to sing, changed her path forever, leading her away from the Old World and back to the New World.

Since 2007, Patricia has invested her energies towards building a singing career. Her partner in this pursuit is a Brazilian friend, guitarist and composer, Carlos Bernardo. In 2008, Patricia spent 6 months in Rio de Janeiro, befriending exceptional musicians of the ‘Carioca’ jazz scene, as well as beginning to write music of her own.

In August 2009, Patricia recorded “This is the New World”, her first album. There are twelve songs (and one poem) on the album, nine of which are original works composed in collaboration with Carlos Bernardo, in no less than four languages.

THE  TRAVELLING  VOICE  

Patricia  Cano  is  a  Canadian  singer/songwriter  born  to  Peruvian  parents  whose  musical  

education  has  been  nurtured  by  an  astonishing  multiplicity  of  references,  something  this  

album  establishes  from  the  very  first  track.    Notable  are  the  influences  of  Brazilian  music  

(the  Brazilian  guitarist  Carlos  Bernardo  is  featured  in  the  album  credits  as  co-­‐author  of  

many  of  the  songs),  the  Peruvian  “festejo”  rhythm,  as  well  as  Jazz,  among  other  less  

immediate  influences.    The  result  is  an  elegant  exercise  in  musical  syncretism  in  which  

Cano´s  diaphanous  voice  shines  bright,  a  voice  we  will  most  certainly  hear  more  about  in
