In 2014, Edward Miller travelled to Hong Kong to capture a groundbreaking documentary of the Hong Kong pro-democracy protests, designed for the Oculus Rift, which you can watch at www.hongkongunrest.com. Watched thousands of times around the world, the film broke fresh journalistic ground and provided a glimpse of how virtual reality (VR) could change broadcast media. But what is the state of 360° video today? Will 360° video replace standard ‘fixed view’ video content? What will video production for VR look like in the future? In this talk, Edward will share his perspective on the technology which is transforming the industry and explore the opportunities virtual reality offers those in the news and creative industries.

Zillah Watson and Peter Boyd Maclean will discuss their recent adventures experimenting with new ways to tell stories using 360° video. They’ll cover the big questions film-makers are grappling with from coming up with the right stories and locations, to the challenges involved in filming and editing. Does old film-making know-how count or does it require a completely new way approach? Can you move the camera without making your viewers feel sick? How do you film an interview that makes the viewer feel part of the conversation? How do you create a shortlist for 360° footage? Can you cut it together without just fading to black between shots?

Horvitz Chair of Journalism Innovation at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse / USA

Prof. Dan Pacheco will draw upon material from his Virtual Reality Storytelling class at the S.I. Newhouse School to provide practical steps for creating interactive scenes in Unity3D that can be exported for web and the Oculus Rift. This will include demos and a deep-dive into Harvest of Change, the virtual reality journalism project he managed for The Des Moines Register and Gannett Digital, and some of the final projects from students in VR Storytelling. In addition, he will bring a 360° GoPro camera rig and stitching software to demonstrate how 360° videos can be produced and loaded onto the Samsung GearVR and into Unity3D VR environments.

15.15–16.00Immersive Journalism: Using virtual reality for news & nonfiction• Nonny de la Peña

CEO of Emblematic VR, L.A. / USA Nonny de la Peña will talk about using virtual reality to create news and nonfiction. By taking advantage of feelings of presence that comes with wearing virtual reality goggles, experiencing real time graphics and hearing evocative audio, audiences can “enter” a fully immersive recreation of a news, documentary or non-fiction story. By putting participants on scene as the story unfolds, it allows unprecedented access to the sights and sounds, as well as the feelings and emotions, which accompany witnessing powerful events. Nonny will also talk about her latest projects including the World Economic Forum commissioned Project Syria which puts the audience on a street in Aleppo when a mortar shell hits; Use of Force, which takes the audience to the Mexico/US border to witness the homicide of a migrant by US border patrol, funded by Tribeca Film Foundation, the Associated Press and Google; Formula One, funded by Standard Chartered Bank; and Trayvon Martin, a GearVR and Google Cardboard experience.
