Company Mission and Development Focus
We have been really dissatisfied with the current design principles of electronic magnifiers for vocational application. Most solutions require a lot of desk space, and are ergonomically uninspiring. We decided on a new, innovative concept that improves and surpasses current solutions, while also saving space on your desk – at work or in your home environment. The design of the Visio
500 and its development has taken 2-years to complete, resulting in a solution that is ground-breaking in many ways:
Wolfgang BaumFounder, President, CEO
BAUM Group
The camera is located directly behind the screen and enables “in-line-viewing”. Any action or movement under the camera is corresponds directly to the screen; the eye-hand coordination is much better, as if the camera is located on a separate stand beside the monitor. The monitor itself can be widely adjusted for height, tilt, and especially the reading distance. The reading table is newly developed and includes switchable damping, supporting a smooth reading and higher reading speed. The most significant point of interest is that the reading table can be locked in the Y-direction, which is the movement to and from the user. The moving of the table in this direction is replaced by moving the camera electrically.
We believe in independence for every person who is blind or visually impaired. We passionately apply our skills and experiences toward developing solutions that reinforce success at school and work, and improve quality of life.
We always question the way things have been done in the past. We explore new and innovative ways to solve problems. Our approach includes ergonomics, thoughtful design, and materials that meet the highest quality standards. We care deeply about our customers, and help and support them as much as we can. We care about our employees too, and support them to reach their highest potential, ensuring a secure and lasting working environment.
We develop innovative technology solutions that provide independence for people who are blind or visually impaired. Our high-quality solutions allow visually impaired people to magnify their world, and blind people to access electronic and print content with speech or braille output.

Reading Table (moves only horizontally)
Reading Camera
Camera-movement is controlled by the user through simply and lightly pushing or pulling the locked table in the y-direction. Pressure sensors interpret this signal and electrically adjust the camera to move up and down the page.
This brings a clear advantage for a pc-workstation:
Since the reading table needs only to be physically moved horizontally (x- direction), the keyboard and mouse can be placed directly in front of the device. Desk space is “cleaned up”; the user sits in front of the adjustable screen and has keyboard and mouse directly in front of the screen. Space beside the Visio 500 remains empty, and can be used for other purposes.
The pictures on this page show the clear advantage of the VISIO 500 compared to a traditional solution.
This is not only important at work. Many partially sighted people have a PC at home, and space is an issue here as well.

The Screen (Monitor)
The Visio 500 has all functions of a “normal” CCTV:It consists of a stand, a reading table, a camera and a monitor. The reading material is placed on the reading table and is magnified and displayed in true colour or false colours on the monitor. So far nothing special. However, the entire construction is different. The camera is mounted on a separate and independent arm behind the screen. This creates an important advantage, which we will now explain. The monitor is a bright and brilliant, non-glare 22” screen with full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels), and allows a wide range of magnification. On the back of the monitor, release switches are mounted and intuitively reachable. With these switches, the brakes for the monitor are released, allowing it to be easily moved up and down, back and forth (reading distance), and tilted. The forces are counterbalanced with internally mounted springs.
By releasing the switches, the brakes apply and the screen remains in that new position. The adjustable reading distance (moving the screen in and out) is an especially important function for many partially sighted people, which is rarely considered. The individual reading distance can be adjusted according to your reading material or according to the special needs of your eyesight.

The Camera of the Visio 500 is mounted on a separate, independent arm and is tilted electrically by a motor. There are four switchable positions: Top of the page, vertically downwards (writing position), at an angle looking to the front of the reading table (reading position), and the mirror-position. There are two switch-buttons on the back of the screen (on each side), just above the switch bar for unlocking the brakes. The vertical downwards position is for magnifying objects under the camera or manipulating with the hands (writing, sorting small things, needle and thread, etc). The reading position is required in case the reading table is unlocked and moved in all directions. The motorized movement of the camera is achieved by tapping on the switches. The camera moves always to the “next” position, upwards or

downwards. This electrically controlled camera movement is also used to smoothly “scan” the whole page up or down – we will get to this later.

The Reading Table
“Normal” function as a reading table
Switchable damping
The reading table of the Visio 500 functions the same as any regular x/y-table; it can be moved left to right for reading. To go to the next line or for reading columns vertically, the table is moved in and out. A smooth movement of the table is – especially on higher magnifications – not really easy: small fast movements make reading difficult and a slow movement is sometimes hard to control by hand. This problem is made worse if the readers hands jitter slightly, or move uncontrollably.
We developed a new solution for that problem:
The reading table is equipped with a switchable damping system. A damping is a resistance for the movement. The faster the movement, the stronger the damping. Pushing the table against this resistance smooths the movement and enables a continuous reading flow and higher reading speed. Moving the table in the reading direction is from left to right, going back to the beginning of the next line is usually a fast movement. Therefore, the damping is only active in the reading direction. The damping can be switched on and off with knobs for horizontal and vertical movement. The knobs are located under the surface of the reading table.

Locking the table in the vertical direction (Y)
Keyboard and mouse can be placed in front of the reading table
Pushing the table fully back to the stand, a clamp is reached inside the unit, and can be locked with a small lever on the left side of the case. The table is locked and can only be moved now horizontally. The vertical movement over the page is now carried out by the motorized camera.
Motorized Camera Movement
Controlling the movement of the camera is intuitive: Pushing the Table slightly backwards towards the case moves the camera down the page. Pulling the table toward you moves the camera up the page. Pushing or pulling requires almost no movement; the pressure is taken on by sensors and the camera moves as if the user would move the table. Applying more pressure when pushing or pulling speeds up the camera movement.
Moving the camera instead of the table is a great advantage for the user:
The keyboard can now be placed directly in front of the reading table and the space for a reading camera is no longer required!
Pressure sensors control the camera movement

Solution for Work environment
Luis Baffetti consults with partially sighted users in Switzerland, and their working environment. He is with BAUM Retec Switzerland and has vision problems himself. “Being a partially sighted PC-user myself, I know that there are limitations to which we usually have to adapt.
The Visio 500 is a device which adapts optimally to the user’s needs, not vice versa.
Such a perfect solution for the work environment as well as for home use was not available until now. I am very glad that our company has faced this challenge and realized such a product despite the huge development task."
The usual ergonomic rules for PC Workstations are not really suitable for partially sighted people. Vision problems are very different and very individual. The optimal setup cannot be generalized and must include the special needs of each user When a user is able to look in a downward direction instead of straight ahead, it allows for better liquid distribution on the surface of the eye, which reduces eye fatigue. There are many devices on the market, where the user has to look up to a highly
mounted screen. This is uncomfortable and can lead to neck pain. With a normal sighted person, the reading distance is recommended to be about 20”. People with vision problems have individually different reading distances. With the Visio 500 the reading distance can be changed easily and optimized for the user’s needs.

Connectors and Extensions
The Visio 500 is easily connected to a PC just like any monitor. No installation is required. The split-screen-function (Splitting the screen among camera- and PC-image) is included at no extra charge. If the monitor-connector of the pc is wired to the input of the Visio 500 (HDMI connector), the screen has three modes:
■ Camera image ■ PC-image ■ Split Screen (horizontally split)
The split screen is variable and is controlled by a slider on the lower side of the screen. No other adjustments are required. To view screen content from the PC in large print, the user must also have magnification
software such as Cobra Zoom or ZoomText™.What is good for the work environment in the office is equally suited for home use. A PC is standard in almost every home. Email and Internet access at home is just as important as at work. Therefore, the Visio 500 is also ideal for private use.
With the Visio 500, the PC and electronic magnifier form a very practical, integrated and space saving solution.
The Visio 500 is prepared for future exten-sions and functions such as OCR and speech. They will be available as ad-ons in the future.
