February 14 is Ash Wednesday, the first day of the 40 day

season of Lent, a tithe of the year. It is a time of spiritual “spring

cleaning” in preparation for the celebration of the resurrection on

Easter. Lent is symbolic of the 40 days Jesus spent in the

wilderness. It has been a time for training new Christians. Ashes,

used in Bible times as a symbol of repentance from sin and/or

grief, are used to make a sign of the cross on the forehead of a believer as a covenant

to keep this holy season. The ashes are the charred remains of the palm branches used

last year on Palm Sunday.

February 14 is also Valentine’s Day, named to honor the legendary priest

Valentine who ignored the edict of the Roman Emperor Claudius forbidding marriage

as a way to boast military recruitment efforts. Valentine secretly married couples

until he was arrested and imprisoned. While in prison, he befriended the jailer’s

daughter and amused himself by cutting shapes in paper and writing her notes.

Legend has it that although she was blind, he restored her sight. His last note arrived

on the morning of his death and ended with the words “Your Valentine”. In 496,

February 14 was named in honor of St. Valentine. By then Christianity had been

“legalized” in the Roman Empire. How much of the legend is accurate is unsure, but

we know that he was martyred because of his love of Christ and his love for others.

Maybe it is fitting that the two celebrations are on the same day remembering that

the human love we share is only because of

God’s sacrificial and forgiving love shown

in the life and death of Jesus Christ. We

celebrate Valentine’s Day remembering

those we love. We celebrate Ash

Wednesday remembering that Jesus Christ

loved us. This year, don’t forget February

14!

TeamEffort Mission Trip Fundraiser:

Pancake Dinner, 2/11/18

Donations accepted for a “Fat Sunday”

Pancake Dinner after church. We’ll be serving up some

pancakes and sausage from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. All

proceeds will go to those youth who will be serving you

your meal for their Summer Mission Trip to Virginia

Beach this July. As always,

we appreciate your love and

support for these kids.

Service Saturdays:

2/17/18, Depart for Heart & Hand @ 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Starting this month we will be back on track to help

serve those in need by heading out on the 3rd Saturdays of

the month, February 17th this month, to Heart & Hand

Thrift Store in South Charleston. Heart + Hand Outreach

Ministries has been the mission project of the Midland

South District of the West Virginia Annual Conference of

The United Methodist Church since 1974. While this is a

youth event, we want to welcome anyone from the

congregation who feels led

to get involved with a

service project.

Looking Ahead to March:

Snow Tubing/Skiing Trip, 3/3/18

Departing for Winterplace Ski Resort @ 9:30 a.m.

skiing or snowboarding ($60 with your own equipment,

$90 including rented equipment), or both! ($90/$120). We

will have adults both out on the slopes and also in the

lodge. You don’t have to be a youth to go either; this trip

is open to our College & Career folks as well as anyone in

the church who wants to go and have a great time

together. Please see Pastor

Jeremy to sign up today so

we can coordinate

transportation and food.

Confirmation Class is underway. We will receive our

Confirmands on Palm Sunday, March 25. Please keep the

students, their mentors, and Pastor Jeremy in your prayers

during this class session.

Jayné Kirk, Director of Children &

Family Ministries

Jenni Reib, Business Manager,

Children’s Outreach Ministries

Believe it or not, we will begin taking

registrations for the 2018-2019 school

year in February! If you would like to

enroll your child or grandchild, you can

download registration forms at the church

website, or give us a call at 304-562-9170,

and we will make sure you get the information you need.

Registration will open to the public in March, so if you

are interested contact us soon before we fill up!

Children’s Outreach Ministries is very fortunate to

have the opportunity to show the love of God to children

every day who otherwise may not be exposed to it. They

learn how much God loves them in a trusted, caring

environment, and they will remember that for the rest of

their lives. Your continued prayers and support are what

make this happen! We appreciate all you do for our

center. We are truly blessed!

PipeSounds Presents

Our next PipeSounds program will feature

the silent movie classic “Steamboat Bill, Jr.”

starring Buster Keaton, on Friday, March 9,

Souper Bowl Sunday

Super Bowl LII will be

a battle between the Philadelphia Eagles

and the New England Patriots, and it's time to bring in

cans of soup to "vote" for your favorite

team! The big game is on Sunday,

February 4, so bring your soup to the

front of the Sanctuary, and place it in front

of the sign for the team you hope will

win. Soup will be donated to the

Community Cupboard

Diaper Shower

for Pregnancy Resource Center

We're going to shower the Women's Choice

Pregnancy Resource Center with diapers. There's an

urgent need for large diapers - size 5, 6, and 7. Please

bring in diapers by February 18. Thank you for

you generosity!

Other free services the resource center

offers to new mothers include pregnancy tests,

ultrasounds, counseling, parenting classes, and a Kids

Kloset. Parenting classes are required for parents receiving

large baby items. Volunteers are needed to work in the

Kids Kloset. If interested, call (304) 346-9779 or

email: [email protected]. You may also contact

Beth Sauvageot for more information, (304) 542-0601.

JOY Fellowship & Wesley Circle

The construction crew has

informed us that the kitchen

will be unavailable for any

use February 12-23.

Because of this closure,

neither JOY Fellowship nor

Wesley Circle will meet in

February. Both groups look forward to resuming in

March! We are thankful for the construction progress and

for your patience.
