Attractions
Antwerp’s Prelude
At Nokia we consider fun a big part of the fundamentals for success, and as curiosity run our own engines, we encourage you to discover this superb city and to make the most out of it.
With just over half a million inhabitants, Antwerp is a portside city that punches well above its weight when it comes to food, art, culture and design. Straddling the River Scheldt, the pretty burg is easy to peruse on foot and offers a picturesque mix of cobbled lanes and gothic, baroque and contemporary architecture.
Nestled between the North Sea and Belgium’s bucolic Flanders, the cosmopolitan hub is enjoying a renaissance in everything from fashion and art to achitecture, though its world-leading diamond
trade and reputation for fresh retailers remains a constant. Here you will find the old town and the Grote Markt, whose 16th-century renaisance-style town hall and towering Cathedral of Our Lady. The Meir shopping street leads from the old town to the ornate Central Station, which connects the city by rail to the rest of Flanders.
Close to the Station you’ll find the diamond district and north of the centre lies the newly gentrified Het Eilandje, home of the Museum aan de Stroom as well as Park Spoor Noord.
We have selected some of the main attractions for you to consider visiting. If you want more information about other “must-sees”, you can click on the following links to help you decide.
Port House The City Hall
The New Palace of JusticeMuseum Aan De Stroom
Zaha Hadid Architects’ design of the Antwerp Port Authority’s head office puts the Port of Antwerp on the architectural world map. The Port House symbolises the dynamic and innovative nature of the Port of Antwerp . The building is the workplace of 500 employees and a meeting place for the many international contacts of the Antwerp port community.
Stands on the western side of the Great Market Square.
Erected between 1561 and 1565 after designs made by
Cornelis Floris de Vriendt and several other architects and artists, this Renaissance
building incorporates both Flemish and Italian influences. The City Hall
is inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
An international competition was organized to select
a design for the new law courts and in 1999
a modern design by the architectural firm of Richard
Rogers was chosen. The New Palace of Justice
was billed as one of the city’s first environmental-friendly buildings thanks to a natural ventilation, use of natural light and
heath restricting measures. Rainwater is collected and
used to sprinkle the gardens between the wings.
A must-visit for all tho-se interested in the past, present and future of Antwerp as a major interna-tional port. Co-founded by Antwerp Port Authority in 2011, the museum building is now a city landmark in its own right, a storehouse of history and art, built on the site of the historic Hansa House that stood here from 1564 onwards.
