Letter from Prime Minister

During August the school received a letter congratulating our Year 9 students on an initiative they undertook with teacher, Ms Hamilton. The letter is printed below.

Congratulations to Ms Hamilton and her class. We have never come to the attention of the Prime Minister in this way before 2012. Well done!

Federal Member’s Visit

During September, at the invitation of parent volunteers, Mr Laurie Ferguson MP, Member for Werriwa, accepted an invitation to attend one of our Multilit reading recovery lessons for Year 7 students. Mr Ferguson acted as a tutor during the lesson and was very impressed with what he saw. He was particularly impressed with the improvement in literacy attained by all students involved in this program. Thank you Mrs Menon and all our parent volunteers for this recognition.

December (Week 11)

Term 3 has been a full-on term for Year 8! Every fortnight Mrs Noakes or Miss Ventura would visit one of the Year 8 classes and deliver a lesson on anti-bullying, how we can stand up against bullying, how to protect ourselves and seek help when we are bullied online and how to accept and cope with the challenges that come our way in life. We would like to thank Miss Ventura for being such an awesome teacher and supporting the well-being of our Year 8 students. Congratulations to Tahnee Ping, Toni Ripine and Davana Fraser for solving the Year 8 problem. There is another problem ready for solving on our noticeboard. Come and see Mrs Noakes with your solutions and win a Bronze Award if you are correct. Congratulations to the following students for receiving positive categories this term. She always strives to do her best (often doing extension tasks), produces neat and well-organised book work, valuably contributes to class discussions and has achieved some fantastic results this term. Well done Maria! Keep up the great work. Important Reminder - The camp costs $236.50. The deposit of $100.00 is now due to the office. Please pay ASAP! Only 18 students have made payments towards the end of year camp, if more students do not pay before the end of Week 1, Term 4, the camp will have to be cancelled. STUDENT OF THE TERM - TERM 3

Year 7 – Extra-Curricular

Shawn Holt is a member of the school‟s SRC as well as an active member of the school‟s Roadie Crew. As part of his role in the SRC‟s initiative to „beautify the school‟, Shawn helped with painting the alcove next to the library in his recess and lunchtimes. Shawn also helped with the planting of the plants around the area.

As a member of the Roadie Crew, Shawn assists with the setting-up for exams, assemblies and other activities in the hall all before school time. He also helps with the behind-the-scene activities at all school carnivals.

As an active member of two extra-curricular programs run within the school I have chosen Shawn as this term‟s Student of the Term for Year 7. Well done Shawn!

Ms J. Young Year 7 Year Adviser

Year 9 – Leadership

The focus of Student of the Term for Year 9 was Leadership. Leadership can take many forms. It can be leading a group of students, simply setting a good example for others to follow, it can be high profile, or it can be done quietly without notice.

Seini Havea has proven herself to be an exceptional example of leadership within the school community. She sets an outstanding example for other students to follow and does it all „under the radar‟ so to speak. She does not draw attention to herself, but goes about helping others in the school community in a quiet and dignified fashion.

Seini sets a good example by: always being in school uniform, near perfect attendance, not truanting, not being late to school, being in class when she is meant to be and acting as a mentor for younger students. In addition to all of this Seini has taken a leadership role behind the scenes in the Polyfest group, with one of the group‟s many achievements being the raising of funds for cancer research.

On behalf of Mrs Pilgrim I would like to encourage Seini to continue to set a great example for other students and congratulate her on her leadership and conduct throughout this term. We look forward to witnessing her further achievements within the Ingleburn High School community.

Ms L. Peters Year 9 Assistant Year Adviser

Year 10 – The Arts

Student of the Term for Year 10 was Kate Lauina for her contribution to the Arts at Ingleburn High School. Kate is an active leader of the Polyfest Group, who is also a leader, performer and organiser. She is a dedicated student not only in class but in other groups around the school. She has participated in the Intensity Concert earlier this year and Kate also assisted in the Year 12 HSC performances as a back-up singer this year.

Miss M. Gerace Year 10 Year Adviser

Year 11 – Leadership

Do not follow where the path may lead.

Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Harold R. McAlindon

Actions speak louder than words and Joshua‟s actions have certainly earned him the title of leader. Joshua‟s leadership qualities have been noted in and out of class, on the rugby field and during extra-curricular activities.

On the rugby field Joshua leads by example. Joshua has demonstrated his leadership through his teamwork, decision making, and rapport with his fellow peers. He has also taken a big role in coaching the younger boys at school. His qualities have promoted him to Captain of the Rugby team next year where he will lead his team in the University Shield Competition.

In addition, Joshua represented the school while participating in Sport‟s Coaching at Sackville Street Primary School. The students participating in his coaching session did so with enthusiasm and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Joshua‟s skills were commended by the primary school teachers whose classes participated in the program.

Furthermore, Joshua has shown further leadership skills in the area of student welfare over the last two years. He mentors students on how to effectively resolve conflict.

Congratulations Joshua! Continue leading the way.

YEAR 10 „POLISH‟ EXCURSION:

Twenty-five Year 10 students went on an excursion to the Holiday Inn at Mascot and participated in a Beacon Program called „POLISH‟. On this day, we learnt many skills such as; how to present ourselves at an interview, how to eat formally and we had mock interviews.

Vicky Halloran and Nicole Bush

On the „Polish‟ excursion, we were taught skills that are a necessity in the life of a successful person, from big things to tiny little details that were the difference between an ordinary person and a great person. Throughout the day we were taught plenty of new skills, from the importance of communication and how to communicate well to how important it is to make a good first impression, which was then put to the test because we were thrown into a formal scenario with businessmen and women. We had to use our new found skills to show that we had been successfully „polished‟. We wrote down three short term goals that we would achieve in the next three months to try and help us be better people. It was a great day that I, along with the 24 other students, enjoyed thoroughly and I recommend more students take part in it.

Women Leading Peace – Year 10 High Resolves:

Nabeela and I are a part of High Resolves and we were lucky enough to be selected to attend a conference about „Women Leading Peace‟ at Tara Anglican High School in North Parramatta. It was such an amazing experience where we got to meet women who have achieved so much in their lives. We met a lady from the defence force, a journalist who has worked overseas, a politician and a lady in the media who has also worked in Rwanda.

On this day we met a lot of other students from other schools and during our sessions on the day we learnt that you can do a lot, as a woman, to lead peace and create a better future. This was an experience that we both will never forget.

YEAR 10 RSPCA EXCURSION

Eight students recently went on an excursion to the RSPCA. While we were there, we learnt about the ethical treatment towards chickens and that white chickens are used for meat and brown chickens are used for eggs. We also learnt about treating animals and letting them heal in safe facilities. We also found out that the RSPCA gets only 2% of their costs paid by government funding, and that they rely greatly on fundraisers and donations. We were also taught that when we buy pig at the shops to eat, we are actually eating baby piglets, not full-grown pigs. We were told to try and buy free range eggs and meats, as those are the animals that are treated in an ethical way. We learnt about animal cruelty, and all the different ways that people treat their animals badly. We ended the day by meeting a recovery puppy who is living with a carer until she is checked and is found a new home. After completing our tour, we left. Overall, it was a very enjoyable day and everyone who attended the excursion was glad that they had the opportunity to go.

"Put the spray away so we can all breathe a little easier"

School settings, such as change rooms and classrooms, can be environments where high concentrations of aerosol deodorants, body sprays and hair sprays are used. Many people with asthma find that these types of products can exacerbate their asthma, causing symptoms that make it harder for them to breathe. In Australia one in ten children has asthma, but young people spraying aerosols may not realise that they could be affecting other people near them with asthma.

It is school policy that aerosol deodorants not be used in school. A better option is the roll-on deodorants.

This a further reminder to all asthma sufferers to

keep their inhaler close by at all times.

ANTI-RACISM – A MESSAGE FROM THE ARCO

Ingleburn High School has a strong commitment to Multicultural Education, Equity and Equality. These beliefs permeate all of our school policies including our Anti-Racism Policy, the Cultural Diversity and Community Relations Policy, Multicultural Education in Schools, the Aboriginal Education and Training Policy and the Complaints Handling Policy, amongst others. This ethos is embedded in our teaching practice and not only is it taught explicitly to students, but it also forms part of our expectations of the safe, respectful learners that attend Ingleburn High School.

Any member of the school community has the right to lodge a complaint and seek a favourable resolution if they have been the victim of racial vilification in the school context. The resolution of such complaints can be either formal or informal depending on the severity and frequency of the abuse. It is my duty as an Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO) of Ingleburn High School to handle such complaints and to provide mediation, education and monitoring that leads to reduced recidivism of racial abuse in our school.

If any student experiences such vilification, they are encouraged to speak to their teacher and to see myself in the History, Languages and Music Faculty in B17. If you have any questions regarding our policies or the resolution process, please contact me through the school‟s front office.

What a busy month September has been…. With the PolyGroup performances, fundraising for charity, barbeques, fundays, a regional Pacific Award issued, a Maori cultural day with Te Kete Kahrungi, Lunch with the Girls (Beacon), Barbeque with the Boys (Beacon) and a behind the scenes RSPCA visit… Phew!!!! Lol

To showcase what has been happening in the school – I have posted many more photos and stories on the school‟s webpage … http://www.ingleburn-h.schools.nsw.edu.au and the Deputy Facebook page that I have http://www.facebook.com/#!/ms.knapman - so check them out after you have read this newsletter.

SAY NO TO HOMOPHOBIA DAY – was a wear purple mufti day – where the money raised is to be given to an organisation called TwentyTen – a youth refuge, drop in centre and resource hub for young people who are same sex attracted. This day was a powerful day of acceptance, tolerance, friendliness and togetherness as students and staff wore purple as a statement to “say no to Homophobia”.

BEACON – RSPCA VISIT

We were invited to take a small group (six Year 10‟s and two Year 8‟s) on a “behind the scenes” tour at the Yagoona RSPCA. This was because we work with an organisation called Beacon – who help us make links with businesses that our students may wish to work with when they leave school. We were able to groom cats, watch a de-sexing operation and see many animals in various stages of recovery within the RSPCA hospital. It was a great day out and I was even more surprised and excited to see one of our ex-students from about ten years ago feature in a PowerPoint presentation about all of the career and work opportunities available within the RSPCA in NSW!

BEACON – Lunch with the Girls

The Lunch with the Girls was a day for mentoring and leadership development – held in the BlackRock offices in Sydney. This was a very exciting day for these girls who were able to experience what life was like in a corporate business in Sydney, whilst focusing on developing skills for their future.

REGIONAL PACIFIC AWARD – 2012 for the Arts – awarded to Ingleburn High School’s PolyGroup

Ingleburn High School is lucky enough to have Tim Time work in our school as a mentor for our students. He has also brought with him some volunteers such as Cheyenne Marsters, Ruth Marsters, Esther Sulusi and (new to the program) Louise Kelekolio. This team of volunteer workers work with our Polynesian students by: mentoring them, helping them with their studies, guiding them with their cultural dances – as well as coordinating fundraising for cancer charities, helping a family in need and making connections with Canberra ANO university and other local schools. Students involved in this program are improving in their attendance, punctuality, behaviour, attitude and participation in school activities.

In recognition for all of this, a community member, with no links to our school, nominated our PolyGroup for a Regional cultural award – which was announced at a high profile dinner ceremony held at the Cube, Campbelltown Catholic Club.

Representing the group to accept the award on behalf of Ingleburn High School was Leilani Teariki and Richard Sulusi.

This was presented by the Campbelltown Mayor - Anoulack Chanthivong in front of over 500 people, including local businesses, other schools, Wests and Bulldogs rugby league players and many other special guests. So a great boost to our school‟s reputation within the local area.

180 Degrees- Turn Your Life Around Camp

On 19 September ten boys braved the cold conditions and embarked on a two day camp in the Holsworthy barracks as part of their 180 Degrees - Turn Your Life Around program.

After meeting at the base and getting our clearance check to enter the military grounds, the boys began their 2 km pack march to our camping site. After a few early activities it was time to cook our first meal. The meals were provided by the Australian Defence Force in the form of a 24 hour combat ration pack. Throughout the day the boys were able to win points which could be used to "purchase" luxury items such as knives and forks, fruit, noodles and baked beans.

After dinner we sat down to discuss topics such as respect, fears, role models, dreams and teamwork to consolidate our learning throughout the 180 Degree lessons. This was a tough time as some boys clearly became emotional discussing sensitive topics.

Approaching 9.00pm we began a game of hide and seek in pitch black conditions in a thick bush area. This was fun but I‟m sure some boys were a little scared by the prospect of what may have lurked within the silent dark bush.

At 11.00pm all boys were in their tents. The talking continued throughout the night until slowly the boys drifted off to sleep one at a time. It was a 6.30am start in the morning with many boys feeling the pinch of a late night. After breakfast we began the new day with navigation skills and walked past a few firing ranges which echoed through the previous night.

The camp was wrapped up after a final debrief, clean up and declaration as we exited the camp site and made our three kilometre walk, fully equipped with back packs, up the hill back to base.

All boys behaved well and took a lot out of the camp. A special mention to our mentors Conner Hamilton and Masen Cupitt who led the boys well. A big thank you and well done to the following boys: Nathan Abbott, Tristan Henderson, Lachlan Horne, Dylan Hudson, Aziz Jalloh, Bryce Marks, Joseph Pesa, Anthony Rao, Suliasi Taumalolo and James Timu.
