Historically, camp has been an overnight, weekend camp for children who have experienced the loss of a significant person in their life to connect with peers, remember their loved ones, express feelings, learn coping tools and have fun. This year, because of COVID-19 restrictions and the uncertainty of when camp would be able to resume in person, our Good Grief program recognized a need to offer a virtual camp. Every day for a week, campers met online via telehealth services, to complete individual and group activities to facilitate bonding, connections and shared experiences. Activities included crafts, scavenger hunts, building forts and music. Each camper was sent the supplies needed to participate in the daily sessions. By encouraging campers to utilize household items available to them, it reminded them that they are surrounded by tools that not only assist in their coping and healing, but also connect them to their loved ones. During camp week, our Treasure Coast Hospice music therapist assisted the youth counselors by teaching campers how to use music as an expression of their grief. Camp Good Grief has always been an integral part of the grief support services provided to families by Treasure Coast Hospice. Despite the change in camp structure and delivery, those who attended were significantly impacted. As one 10-year-old male camper excitedly expressed, “I am so happy to have made a friend that understands, thank you for camp.” One parent also reflected on her son’s participation in camp sharing “He really liked the camp last week; he opened up a lot and seemed to be in a better mood.” The connections made, healing that was experienced and the fun that was had, exceeded the team’s expectations for their first virtual program. This reaffirms that grief support continues to be vital and necessary to children on the Treasure Coast, especially during these stressful and difficult times. Camp Good Grief, Music Therapy and all of Treasure Coast Hospice’s Grief Support programs are made possible by generous grants and donations from the community. Treasure Coast Hospice Grief Support has hosted Camp Good Grief for almost 30 years.

Campers also had the opportunity to create a song honoring their loved ones. At the end of the week, campers identified how meaningful it was to create a song together and some even sang along!

FALL 2020

TREASURE COAST HOSPICE INPATIENT UNITS Keeping families together during COVIDCOVID-19 has forced many to work remotely, cancel events, vacations and family gatherings. The lives of so many have dramatically changed, especially seniors, who often find themselves confined to their homes, unable to enjoy visits from friends and families. Socializing has ground to a halt, leaving thousands feeling alone, frustrated and depressed.

Imagine being sick or on hospice care in the midst of all of this?

Many hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare facilities have stopped families from visiting patients because of COVID-19. Understanding the importance of having loved ones

together at the end of life, Treasure Coast Hospice (TCH) has worked hard to ensure that patients and those who love them are able to be together at our Inpatient Units (IPUs).

When the risks of COVID-19 became clear, Shannon Cooper, director of the IPUs, and Catherine Rosloniec, clinical educator, immediately began working to strengthen infection control protocols for the IPUs that

went well beyond standard operating procedures. Moreover, in accordance with public health guidelines, CEO Jackie Kendrick, made certain that processes were established to screen guests and staff before entering TCH buildings, including the IPUs. Although the number of visitors has been limited, loved ones are still able to visit patients at our Stuart and Ft. Pierce IPUs.

New check-in stations are now located at every TCH IPU; staff, volunteers,

and families have a safe place to sign in, take their temperature, sanitize, making sure they meet all criteria for entering the facility. Social distancing is a day-to-day practice and dozens of volunteers provided thousands of hand-sewn masks for families and visitors to use when visiting the IPUs.

Treasure Coast Hospice is committed to providing the best end-of-life experience possible wherever our patients call home. As of this writing, the Martin County IPUs have been dedicated to caring for COVID-19 positive patients.

To find out more about Treasure Coast Hospice, please call (772) 403-4500. If you would like to learn more about financially supporting the IPUs, please call (772) 403-4547.

VOLUNTEER CORNERTreasure Coast Hospice (TCH) volunteers work with staff to provide patients and families with compassionate care and support during the end-of-life process. Did you know that studies show the more involved volunteers are in directly caring for patients the higher the levels of satisfaction from families of hospice patients?

Volunteers started hospice and continue to be an integral part of providing patients and those who love them the best end-of-

life experience possible. When COVID-19 impacted all of our lives, we had to examine how to keep the benefit of the volunteer-patient relationship part of our patient’s care plan.

For the safety of our volunteers, patient visits were paused, but that has not kept them from connecting with our patients. TCH volunteers have spent hours writing personal notes to patients, over 1,248 notes to date!

TCH volunteers have also used their talents to provide over 5,300 hand-sewn masks to the TCH Inpatient Units (IPU) allowing patients to safely have their loved ones around them. However, they did not stop there! Hospice patients have received 100 handmade blankets and veterans have received over 100 memory packets (see photos). The incredible amount of love and compassion our volunteers have put into these creative ways to care for our patients truly shows how amazing they are.

With safety measures in place, TCH volunteers are slowly

starting to be allowed to come back to work at all TCH facilities including the IPUs and the Thrift Stores.

No matter where they are or what role they are filling, you can be certain the hearts of every TCH volunteer is with our patients and their loved ones.
