members of the Italians, onemember of Hanapuso (meaningdefying the authority) and one ofVL (Vilas Logos).The member of Vilas Logos

attacked and stabbed Mathe twicein his back. He managed to fleeand was taken to the BonganiHospital for medical treatment, ashe was bleeding profusely.The other friends also fled.The group of five Italians and

one Hanapuso overpoweredSakhumzi Boqwana and cut histhroat. They hacked him withaxes and a garden fork. Boqwanadied at the scene. The suspectsfled the scene. The investigationwas assigned to Det.WO DitabaMarumo of the Welkom ClusterMurder Task Team.The investigator, together with

the Public Order Policing (POP)and the Tactical Response Team(TRT), launched a manhunt totrace members of the gangs.) The provincial commissioner ofthe police, Lt.Gen. ThabetheMpembe, thanked the police andresidents of Odendaalsrus forworking together to secure aconviction. “My appreciation goesout to the investigator, WOMarumo, who conducted athorough investigion This is anindication that we will neverallow gangs to control our streets.Thanks also to the residents ofOdendaalsrus who assisted uswith information leading to thearrests of these murderers. THE Thabong police arrested a 15-year-oldboy on Tuesday (08/09) for the gruesomeand brutal murder of a 30-year-old man.The murder is gang related.The minor is a member of the gang Fire

Boys.The alleged murder occurred on Monday

(07/09) at about 22:00. The 15-year-oldsuspect and his gang allegedly stabbed a30-year-old man, Simon Motseko Lenka. Heis alleged to have been a member of theTDK gang. Lenka was stabbed in his neck.The gang members then hung him from

a devil’s fork fence not far from his home

in Themba, Thabong.Members of the Thabong Police Commu-

nity Service Centre (CSC), Sgt TlalanyaneHelepi and Const. Lebona Ramokhoase,were on patrol when they were summonedto the scene. They found Lenka, who wasidentified by family members, hanging onthe devil’s fork fence. He was certifieddead at the scene.

Helepi and Ramokhoase, while still atthe scene of the crime, received informati-on from eye witnesses which they thenimmediately followed up. They caught oneof the suspects, a 15-year-old, who cannotbe identified as he is still a minor.“The 15-year-old suspect’s father gave

police a written statement that he did notwant to take responsibility for his child.

“The 15-year-old was detained after thenecessary procedures had been followed ashe is a minor,” said Sgt Mamello Mokhuo-ane of Thabong SAPS Communication,Marketing and Liaison.The minor appeared in the Welkom

Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (09/09).The Thabong police have initiated a man

hunt for the other members of Fire Boyswho were involved in the murder ofLenka. The Thabong police appeal toanyone with information to contact theThabong SAPS on 057-910-2300 or 086-001-0111.

THE Welkom Cluster Police Stations held a successful operation, Operation Fiela, duringwhich 87peoplewere arrestedover a three-dayperiod for different crimes committedwithinthe Welkom cluster stations. These are Welkom, Bothaville, Odendaalsrus, Allanridge,Wesselsbron and the Tactical Response Team. THE Lejwe Le Putswa Deve-lopment Agency, in partner-ship with New Vision FilmStudios, will officially launcha film studio project in Wel-kom on Friday.

“Thiswill be thesecondbig-gest international film studioinSouthAfrica. Internationaldirectors are frequentingWelkom because of the suit-able weather conditions,”said Khaya Mqeke, spokes-person for the LejweleputswaDistrict Municipality.

The shooting of the first in-ternational film, Journey isthe destination, is in fullswing. The region will onceagain be a centre of activities

in days to come.Mqeke said this will be an

economic boost for the city.Some accommodation facil-ties have already been fullybooked for the next twoweeks. “It is sure to place Wel-kom, and the Goldfields, onthe international map.”

Eddie Lesenyelo, chief exe-cutive of the Lejwe Le PutswaDevelopment Agency, saysthe venture is in line with theobjectives of the agencywhich seeks to promote pro-ductive partnerships and co-operation between all rele-vant stakeholders on area-ba-sed initiatives.

THE Free State MEC for Human Settle-ment, Olly Mlamleli, plans strong action toto resolve a long standing dispute whichhas temporarily halted the construction ofthe Merriespruit community residentialcomplex in Meloding, Virginia.

She was speaking to Vista during aninspection of two multi-million randhousing projects in the Matjhabeng LocalMunicipality last Tuesday (1/09).

The two projects are Thandanani inThabong, Welkom, and the Merriespruitcommunity residential complex in Melo-ding, Virginia.

Mlamleli was accompanied by deputyminister of Human Settlements, ZouKota-Fredericks.

The purpose of their visit was also toassess progress of work at the Thandananiproject undertaken by the women’s buildprogramme which seeks to empower womencontractors, and to officially hand overhouses that were completed by them.

Both the Thandanani and Merriespruitprojects are government initiatives.

Mlamleli and Kota-Fredericks wereimpressed with the quality of work in thebuilding of the houses at Thandanani inwhich both male and female contractorswere involved.

With the Merriespruit complex, however,it was just the opposite.

Mlamleli expressed concern about the

negative impact the prolonged disputebetween the main contractors and the localsub-contractors had on delivering theMerriespruit complex.

The disagreement which centred on

payment and allocation of work to sub-con-tractors arose in February this year. Sincethen construction work has been halted.This has resulted in the multi-million randMerriespruit project not being completed in

time.Construction work at the halted project

began in 2013 with the completion date setfor March this year.

This date has now been extended indefini-tely, with authorities of the Department ofHuman Settlement trying to resolve thedispute.

Mlamleli said intervention from herdepartment to resolve the differencesbetween the main contractor and the localsub-contractors, would be a last resort. Thelatter, it seems, will not budge in theirdemand to be prioritised over outsiders inallocation of work at the Merriespruitproject.

“I have appointed an administrator tomediate in the dispute. I’m going to have ameeting and call everybody to agree onterms and conditions there. I’m going to seta realistic time-line to resolve the disputeat Merriespruit. I’m going to be on theirback and will put my foot down to ensurethere is progress,” said Mlamleli.

Both Mlamleli and Kota-Fredericks gavewomen contractors building houses atThandanani the thumbs up. “I’m humbledby the work of women contractors. Theirwork brings us very close to the 50-50 %target of the Free State government inallocation of work to female and maleconstruction companies. This is in line withthe Freedom Charter that stipulates thatpeople shall have houses and security,” saidMlamleli.

kort op die begroting nie, maar maakinwoners geregtig op ’n krediet-terugbeta-ling van alle bedrae wat reeds van hulleoorverhaal is.

“Die munisipaliteit se poging om diefinansiële probleme eksklusief toe teskryf aan wanbetaling deur inwoners is’n selektiewe versinsel van die volleprobleem. Die stadsraad se gebrek aanbehoorlike finansiële bestuur en dieafwesigheid van die politieke wilskragom dit reg te stel, het ons oor dieafgelope 15 jaar op ’n plek gebring waar’n finansiële ineenstorting onvermydelikis indien daar nie drasties binne dievolgende paar maande opgetree word nie.

“Selfs al sou alle inwoners in 2014-’15hul volle munisipale rekeninge betaal hetsoos begroot, sou daar steeds nie genoeg-same geld gewees het om die verpligtingeteenoor Sedibeng na te kom nie.

“Dit word hoofsaaklik veroorsaak deurons bykans 60%-waterverliese.

“Geen entiteit kan voortbestaan asaankope vir water van Sedibeng R33miljoen per maand beloop, gebruikersgefaktureer word vir R26 miljoen enslegs R10 miljoen daarvan ingekry wordnie.

“Dit beteken waterverskaffing moetmet R276 miljoen per jaar gesubsidieerword,” sê Marais.

IN yet another gang related murder in Mony-akeng, Wesselsbron, a man was brutally attac-ked with a rock and stabbed with knives bypeople who allegedly belong to a gang calledSetso. They robbed him of his jersey. The victimdied at the scene.

According to Capt. Stephen Thakeng, Welkompolice spokesperson, the late Pakiso PatrickLebetha (26) was on his way home on Saturday(05/09) at about 04:00 when he was approachedby a group of people.

“A witness saw through a window that thegroup were attacking a man and hitting himwith a rock. The attackers ran away when thewitness shouted at them to stop what they weredoing.

“Upon the arrival of the Wesselsbron police,the deceased was found without his jersey, withstab wounds to his neck and the back of his earand an open wound to his left eye,” Thakengsaid.

Later that day four suspects were arrested byWO Tshehla Ntsane, Const. Naledi Maleme,Const. Olehile Motlhabane and Const. ModiseSehalo. All four suspects X Mojalefa Pule (19),Michael Mpheku (20), Marope Mahlaku (18) andRamphela Manesa (22) X allegedly belong to agang called Setso. They appeared in the Wessels-bron Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (08/09). Thecase was postponed until 15 September for bailapplication. They remain in custody.

when the bakkie collidedinto the metal fence. Theman, who was alone in thevehicle, sustained head andleg injuries.According to Thabang

Sekhonyana, a resident ofthe area, the vehicle crashedafter spinning out of control.“The vehicle was going veryfast and it seemed to be outof control after it hadovertaken four other cars,only to hit the pavement,” he

“NOTHING is as fulfilling as to helpsomebody,” said Percival Khoarane whostarted the Eros Khoarane Foundation ofHope and Dreams with his mother, Lerato.

In the first year the foundation provided98 learners with school uniforms andshoes.

The Khoarane family from Virginiabelieves education is the key to futuresuccess.

Mufare Trading, Aldam Estate and thefoundation took hands to make a differen-ce in the lives of poor learners.

The 98 children who benefitted so far,are from the Emboniswene and BoasePrimary Schools and the Reatlehile

Secondary School.Besides the assistance with clothing, the

foundation also decided to prove to thelearners that education can open doors forone and that hard work is beneficial.

Every school term, top learners receivevouchers for luxury accommodation at theAldam Estate. The voucher is for fourpersons sleeping in one of the chalets andit includes meals for the whole weekend.

Another incentive is vouchers for aSunday meal for four at the resort.

The foundation has now receivedrequests from as far as Koffiefontein tohelp struggling schools with basic necessi-ties.

gespeel het, toe die Griffons in 2008 dieCurriebeker-eersteliga gewen het en toe hyin 2012 vir die Suid-Afrikaanse Barbarian-span uitgedraf het.Nicky, ’n bourekenaar, sê rugby is sy
