1. VIT, PUNE STUDENTS HELP FRO TRACK PASSPORT
APPLICATIONS(Number of days to process passport application has
come down significantly)
Professor Dipak Pawar from IT & MCA department along with six MCA
students of VIshwakarma Instiute of Technology(VIT, Pune), have developed
software for tracking status of passport which helps to Police to speed up passport
police verification process. Until now the Regional Passport Office (RPO) used to
send details of each application online to the police and the police used to process
it manually and send it back to the RPO. The process used to take about 8 to 12
days, but now software enables the police to send the application in real time. The
students who developed the software Akshay Gupta, Sagar Jaiswal, Mohan Patil,
Ankit Sinha, Suraj Pipariya and Sarbjit Sarkar also visited all 39 police stations in
the Pune city and demonstrated the software to all police.
Quote:
“When the DCP contacted us, we immediately started working on the software. It
is win-win situation for the students and the FRO. Our institute is probably only
one which encourages projects right from the first year. It is part of our
academics. The students win about 7-8 awards every year for social projects”.
- Prof. Dr. Rajesh Jalnekar, Director, VIT, Pune
Highlights of the Software:
Color changing Counter: Passport application can‟t be handled by the police for more than 21 days. As soon as application is uploaded, the counter starts at 21 and
drops by one every day. As soon as 10 days are left, it turns red.
Accessibility Levels: Application details are available on need-to-know basis.
Graphical Representation: The software enables officers to see pendency
statistics in graphical form for better interpretation.
Easy alerts to applicants: Officials can alert applicants about the status of their
application via SMS or Email with a single click.
Shifting Police Stations: If an application is sent to wrong police station, it can be
transferred with a click of the mouse to correct police station.
2. Water suitability analysis for drinking
The research project titled "Water Landscaping" to check the quality of
water in various cities across India started in year 2016, in Chemical Engineering
Department, VIT, Pune. The research work funded by WILO Mather and Platt
Pumps Pvt. Ltd, basically focuses on investigation of chemical and biological
parameters to evaluate water quality for potable use.
The water samples were collected from 19 cities all over India including
Pune. The samples were collected from different sources such as hospitals,
residential colonies, marriage hall, sport grounds, lakes, schools, rivers,
government offices, industrial areas etc. Six liters of water sample was collected
from every source. The onsite analyses of biological parameters were carried out
and chemical analysis were performed at Chemical Engineering Department
laboratories as well as at standard NABL certified analytical laboratories. Analysis
results are compared with ISO standards for drinking water.
Prof.(Dr.) Siddhant Jabade, Prof. (Dr.) Dhananjay Bhatkhande, Prof. Mrs.
Priya Nakade and team of 19 undergraduate students of VIT, Pune collectively
conducted the research, experimentation and analysis.
The results of analysis are being extensively studied to evaluate the
condition of water in Pune city and 18 other major cities of the country.
Conclusions of this study may help to decide major steps in field of improvement
in water quality.
3. Development of cost effective and integrated water distribution system
for residential establishment
Prof. Kapil Mundada from Dept of Instrumentation Engineering along with
UG students of VIT, Pune have developed a cost effective and integrated water
distribution system for residential establishment.
Today‟s world is facing a severe water crisis. The water inadequacy leads to
drought, insufficient drinkable water supply, and shortage of water to fulfill
industrial needs. These problems are arising due to inappropriate and
disproportional water distribution, lack of automation, very less presence of remote
monitoring and controlling facilities.
In system developed by VIT Pune Team every house will get separate flow
metering facility to eliminate water distribution issues. Presently, leakage in the
distribution network poses major challenge in water distribution network. The
proposed system has suggested a simple and effective way for water distribution
management for residential establishments. The features of this system are leakage
detection using a turbine flow meter, integrated solution for water quantity
measurement, payment acknowledgement system implemented with the help of
mobile communication etc. Real time monitoring and control of various parameters
is achieved by micro-controller and ZigBee communication.
Figure below shows Statistics from Pune Municipality Corporation (PMC)
for the year 2015 for drinking water. The system developed optimizing the water
consumption from 190 Liters /capita/day to 135 Liters/capita/day, which saves
around 236 MLD water per day, which can be used for more than 170 villages
around the city to fulfill their water requirement.
4. SMART Dust Bin
Garbage waste management is a word biggest issue in urban and city area. A
dust bin overflow problem always occurs in city as well as in entire countries.
Time to time garbage collection from dust bin process is difficult. Decomposed
garbage creates health related serious issues. In order to solve these issues, VIT,
Pune took initiative under the guidance of Prof Vivek Deshpande. Team VIT have
designed novel smart bin for garbage collection which also give alert for full bin,
toxic gases and collection garbage from it. Proposed invention is designed with IoT
as well as sensor technology. The innovation is patented at Patent office of India.

created among the city people so that we can make our Pune city Clean.
5. “Smart Medical Waste Handling System For Hospitals”
Instrumentation Department of VIT college (Prof. Dr. Manisha Mhetre and
Final year students, Dipesh Borole, Mohini sawant, Shailesh Kamble, Tushar
Gharatkar ) has developed system for medical waste handling for hospitals
Disposal of Medical waste is serious problem which generates lot of health
hazards and it involves lot of cost. Hospitals are facing problems of disposing
medical wastes such as saline bottles, injection needles, cottons, syringe, gloves
etc. Surge in the bio-medical waste has to fight with increased re-usability and
recyclability of medical products. A saline bottle is a one such product which
required in large amount. If recyclability and/or re-usability could be introduced
in its product design, it would be highly profitable for all hospitals and also will
prove better for environment. Currently saline bottles have to be punctured
twice, thus making their reuse impossible. A small modification in the saline
bottle has been proposed by VIT team which uses a reusable opening with
pressure equalisation technique without puncturing it. Then, bottle is tagged
with RFID and goes through the bottle re-filling plant after sterilization process.
6. Deployable Toilets
Concept of reusing of waste water in toilets after proper processing has been
developed in SMART toilet system by VIT team. Septic tank right below toilet
system with proper heat distribution kills the pathogens by chemical process. After
this, used water can be redistributed with development of proper pressure and flow
management. The project also encompasses solar panel on the roof which, drives
the pump and other low power electronic systems. Research on “Deployable
Toilets” has been done by Prof. Dr.Siddharth Jabade (Mechanical Engineering
Department), Prof. Dr.Bhatkhande (Chemical Engineering Department) and Prof.
Dr. Manisha Mhetre (Instrumentation Engineering Department) of Vishwakarma
Institute of Technology, Pune.

Nature of work conducted (Jan 2012 to Dec 2015)
In the present work an effort has been made to assist dentists whereby heating and compaction of
GuttaPercha can be assisted by waves of vibration to cause a more effective and efficient root
canal obturation. The effect of dual energy (i.e. Heat & Vibration) during obturation cycle
alternately and concurrently useable while inserted within root canal has been studied in detail.
To enable dentists find meaningful ways to determine root canal success in performing the
obturation the factors were identified in groups of energy parameters, material parameters,
process parameters and geometry parameters. Thus to cause successful be important &
responsible for the overall success in root canal obturation. Based on the effect of all thesea
simplified mathematical quantitative model is presented for root canal obturation „Success Index‟ (So) for the mild, medium and severe curvatures which are experienced by dentists while
working on patients in a diverse setting. The models have been validated on simulated test
specimens and actual extracted tooth.
During obturation on every tooth, a compaction load signature was captured (as shown in Fig
below) that shows load vs time chart for a complete obturation cycle for each of the teeth. Also
the roots of obturated teeth were analyzed based on Radio Visio-Graph (RVG‟s) which is considered as one of the filling assessment techniques. It showed that the compaction load must
be carefully applied to achieve complete 3D filling of bio-mechanically prepared canal space.
The results, based on experimental findings (i.e. obturation) over extracted teeth showed that a
dentist can use optimum compaction load (knowing reference ideal „obturation load signature‟) to get enhanced filling with the new method.
Total 16 events are noted as shown in the Fig. above, Maximum compaction force of 2.66 kg
(26.19 N) was noted for 15th
event. The compaction force of 2.25 kg (22.07 N) was noted for
14th
event. Final obturation in a canal shows adequate filling.

2) Vegetable Collection Centre at Taluka Level.
3) Opportunities of energy savings in existing Cold Storages.
ABSTRACT
Main objective of the research project is to investigate innovative methodology of low
cost vegetable storage/s for medium income farmers (2 to 4 acres of cultivable land) to
tackle post-harvest problems. Erratic power supply, non-availability of cold storages at
farm end and vegetable collection centers at Taluka level, huge seasonal produce,
market fluctuations and meagre food processing opportunities are the prevalent post-
harvest problems considered in research work.
By correlating laboratory measured intrinsic properties of cauliflower with extrinsic
parameters of cold storage the shelf life predicting equation for cauliflower is generated.
Shelf life equation of cauliflower forms the basis to develop new cold storage. Ice based
thermal energy storage followed by evaporative mode in natural and forced convection
chambers integrated in an insulated envelope are the methodologies used in
combination to design and fabricate innovative cold storage.
Brine less evaporator, circulation of water with pump, energy efficient low temperature
R-404A refrigerant compressor and sub cooled forced air cooled condenser are used to
produce 28 kg ice in three hours inside the newly developed prototype cold storage.
Coldness (sensible + latent heat) of ice is used for 30 to 34 hours to maintain the cold
storage temperature 15 ± 1°C. On evaporative mode the cold storage is run for 2 to 3
more days to enhance the shelf life of vegetables. Intrinsic properties of locally available
cauliflower are measured before and after storage and are found acceptable.
Research work ascertains that the introduction of integration of thermal energy storage
and evaporative cooling methodologies to develop cold storage will lead to minimum
15% of energy savings. Research work introduces the new insight to tackle post-harvest
problems of fresh agriculture produce at farm end.
